  • I love these things, but they are horrendously overpriced these days. I'm still rocking a Harmony One. :-)

  • A job can easily be done by a xiaomi phone at 2/3 of the price with many more functions, like making phone calls, sending messages etc.

    • Can you show us how? Is this universal remote control function built in to all xiaomi phone models?

      • We considered the Logitech Harmony Hub which is basically a IR sender with Bluetooth.
The cost is still steep for what it is though, and of course opening the App and pressing the single programmed button, still takes more steps + time than simply pressing the programmed button on remote.

        • I have the remote, the app and the hub. It is integrated with my media centre PC, receiver, players, TV, IoTs, Google Home and Amazon Echo. It can do a lot more than sending IR & BT signals. For example, using voice control is more convenient and faster than pressing buttons.

I look forward to learning how all these can be easily done with a xiaomi phone at 2/3 the price, but I suspect AllWins is AllBulls.

          • @alvian: Yeah I’ve only owned the older remote only model, so that’s all I know.
If it works for you it must be really convenient, I think we are headed towards less separate components though.
Streaming as an example, rarely use the DVD player + AV reciever any more.
The Apple TV turns on the TV through HDMI control so that’s just one button on, and use RF headphones (which are the Sony’s that turn on when you put them on) to listen so that’s all the components I need to switch on.

    • I think most would expect a phone to have many more functions, like make phone calls and send messages.
Maybe a better arrangement would be: ‘This’ Xiaomi phone is capable of controlling IR (infrared reciever) components.

What the Logitech products are capable of over a ‘normal’ remote is you use a program on the computer to add & arrange each component and in which combination they turn on (‘TV / Amp / Set-top box only’ or ‘Amp / CD player only’ etc), with a single press of a single button.

  • I think these Logitech remotes are grossly overpriced, we got one of the more basic models a few years ago and one by one the buttons stopped working, within 2 years the bad buttons prevented the remote from functioning.
Would expect better for the price we paid.

We considered upgrading to the Logitech Harmony Hub which can be had for around $150 (and uses an App instead of possible failing buttons), but decided on just using the default remotes that came with the products, as in recent days we rarely need to turn on more than 2 of the components.
