Did anyone else think this was a deal for Panadol?

    • no, cos I read the title
but looking at the pic again I can see the resemblance to Panadol box

      I will now ….xD

  • Extra good reliability is always welcome. We have an old desktop tower computer which still runs fast (good thing we went with i7) and is about 6 years out of warranty. Would switching the hard drive out with this give it even more extended life?

I opened it up once to check how dusty it was, and surprisingly it was squeaky clean, I imagine the other components (processor RAM etc) are fine long-term, but I am worried about the hard-drive giving out (computer is more than 8 years old).
It still runs real fast on windows 10 so I feel it’s a waste to bin the other components.

I'd suggest an SSD, with a cheap HDD (not this one - you'll pay extra for features you don't need) -if- you need the extra space.

SSDs make old computers run sooo much quicker.

      • Good point. I thought HDD still beats out SSD for long-term lifespan though (also cheaper per GB).

        • yes, get the ssd, preferably one of those samsung evo 860 deals posted on here.

it would make your pc feel alot more faster and responsive…

which i7 model do you have
and are the other specs of that pc?

an i7 still good enough for most general purpose pc usage
and some gaming if you got a good gpu.

          • @pinkybrain: On the side it says i7 4770, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB HDD & some sort of GeForce card. It’s a off the shelf tower by Acer (+1 for Acer I’m surprised its lasted this long).

Did a fresh install of Windows 10 recently and it runs real quick (boot up as well).
I only use it for minimal stuff like ripping CD’s and sorting my music collection, iTunes, minimal web browsing.
I just worry about the HDD giving out and losing everything one day, and prefer replacing it with another HDD just so it’s longer until I have to worry about replacing it again.

If I thought it was slow I would consider SSD, but I prefer the longevity of HDD (again for basic use i am happy with the speed of the drive and computer).

            • @thebadmachine: The speed of booting up after changing to an SSD will amaze you.
An EVO 860 SSD has a 5 year warranty, which, IMHO, should greatly exceed the expected (future) life of your (older) machine.

              • @cristtos: Ok thanks, it seems the price for a 1TB Samsung EVO 860 SSD is quite similar to this 4TB Toshiba HDD. (And 1TB is likely to be all I need)
I will consider it if there is a good bargain available.

                • @thebadmachine: This is 1TB Samsung 860 QVO $151.30 if you are ebayplus member, plus $20 cashback from Samsung. It is slower than the 860 EVO. Samsung 860 Evo 1TB is $155.65 after $22 cashback.

                  • @jimojr: Oh cashback is from Samsung. Overall code discount is quite small though, I was hoping for under $100 total (also still considering 2-3TB HDD). I have an external back up of music files (just did one the other day), and the HDD in computer still runs almost silently.. so I am willing to wait for a clearance price. (Also thinking I may need 2TB down the road)
                    Thanks for links though.

                  • @jimojr: The speed difference between EVO and QVO is not that significant (way better than HDD anyway) but the warranty is only 3 years (AFAIK).

                    • @cristtos: Hi just an update. I recently had a thought that since HDD are more likely to be / susceptible to damage from being transported, if buying online (delivery by mail / courier) it is a better bet to go with a SSD as they are solid-state.
I have read up on HDD reliability (backblaze.com) and it seems no matter the drive, some will fail within the first year (my guess is due to a combination of damage during transport & quality control). While HDD failure rates have dropped dramatically within the last few years, I think SSD is much more appealing now.
Going with SSD, while overall lifespan may be shorter depending on use, seems a much safer bet.

  • Are these suitable for a normal pc as storage? I have a ssd for my main but need something larger to store my media.

    • It can but it will be over kill

Would this work well for NAS? Better than WD reds?

        • Interested also. Reds only give me 18-24 months using 3 tb size. PITA to rma on a schedule
