[Resolved] How to Contact Malaysian Airlines Complaints Department?

Can someone tell me how I can contact the Malaysian Airlines Complaints Department?

I have searched everywhere but don't seem to find this section. Rather weird I thought. The issue was I bought a ticket transiting in Kuala Lumpur with lay-over time only an hour. Seeing that it is the same type of aircraft and the same Terminal, I naively thought that I would sit in the same aircraft without moving my bump. (I even bought the same seat number!)

Well, someone alerted me and I made an enquiry through their FB page, only to be told that not only I have to leave the plane, I also need to do Custom and Immigration Clearence! Not happy.

Any help will be much appreciated!

is… this your first time on a flight with a layover??

    • +4

Sorry but I literally LOL-ed when reading what OP posted

    • +4

Forget layover, is this OP’s first time flying??

  • What are the flight numbers?

  • +18

If you are transiting, to an overseas destination, I do not believe you have to clear customs/immigration. You may still have to leave the airplane, while they clean the plane (if it is the same one).

But if you are changing to a local flight, then maybe you need to clear customs first.

    • +3

This is correct, if in transit, you don't go out/in customs/immigration normally. Just stay air side and board the plane again.

      • +1

Unless flying to the USofA (at least in LAX). They drop you at the international/domestic terminal of the local airlines and you have to walk outside to Tom Brady building to checkin to foreign carriers.
Also in NZ, they make you get off the plane, go thorough a security search/bag scan and then to the "boarding" side of the glass partition, even for the same flight, i.e; flying to South America with a stop in Auckland you have to disembark and go through security.

  • +3

Do you know how to make a phone call ?

  • +1

If all ur flights are Malaysian airlines , U will get ushered off the plane and directed to the new one, u don’t need to clear immigration

Unless it’s a direct flight you will change planes and even then, You will hurled off for cleaning.

  • +20

Well, someone alerted me and I made an enquiry thur their FB page, only to be told that not only I have to leave the plane, I also need to do Custom and Immigration Clearence! Not happy.

This isn't Malaysian Airlines issue. All transit flights work like this.

What do you want the complaints department do? Let you stay on the plane. hahahahahahahahaha

    • If it’s a direct flight you can stay on the plane sometimes

      • +21

If it’s a direct flight you can stay on the plane sometimes

If it’s a direct flight I hope you always stay on the plane…… You know, direct as in not stopping until you arrive….. :)

        • +2

          Direct flight <> non stop

A-b-c is a direct flight if same flight number , some flights you can stay on, some you are forced off

Air north from ool-tsv-drw is a direct flight you can stay on plane in tsv if going to drw, or at least Jetgo flights are like this, and the Qantas milk run flights through qld

The United airline hopper from Hawaii to Guam is a direct flight stopping at 6 or so islands on the way and you must get off

Prob an international vs domestic scenario

        • +2

I don't mind paying extra for the parachute-drop-stop-over option.

      • +1

Sometimes. Lol. Better to ask. Speaking form Thai airways and Qantas experience only they sometimes give directions over the intercom when landed but you always tell fight crew your plans.

transmitting in Kuala Lumpur with lay-over time only an hour.

What do you frequency do you intend on Transmitting? An hour is not very long is it?

Seeing that it is the same type of aircraft and the same Terminal, I naively thought that I would sit in the same aircraft without moving my bump.

So there is only one of each unique type of aircraft per terminal.

The rest just blows my mind in the worst way.

  • I’ve experienced that to from Mel to London had to stop at Brunei then Dubai. At Dubai even though we were taking the same plane and same seat, the flight attendant had said on the speakerphone that all passengers must disembark and follow the transit signs. I know in some countries it’s the law.

    You're a guest in a foreign country.

What imaginary entitlements are you hoping to receive?

If you don't like the policies (whether correctly applied or not) just don't go there.

    • -2

I think you mean to say you are a foreign guest in the native Malaysian country…

  • +1

Why don't you tell us what flights you booked (including flight numbers) and we'll do our best to explain the easiest way to make the transit?

  • +2

Hang on, you thought the same aircraft was going to take you all the way?

And you are whining because you had to get off the aircraft and walk a small distance to another one? Holy shit mate, are you sure you want to go overseas?

  • The issue was I bought a ticket transmitting in Kuala Lumpur with lay-over time only an hour. Seeing that it is the same type of aircraft and the same Terminal, I naively thought that I would sit in the same aircraft without moving my bump. (I even bought the same seat number!)

    Huh??

    • +7

I think its fair to assume your booking had two seperate flight numbers. I'm not sure why you would think the two flights would be on the same plane.

Also I'm curious as to why its such a big deal to get off the plane for an hour or two?

    • +2

Out of curiosity, where were you flying from and to?

    • +1

If you are unable to do basic research about how air travel works, perhaps you shouldn't be travelling.

If you bought the two flights on a single ticket, you are safe. If you miss the second flight due to a delay in the arrival of the first flight, that is Malaysian Airlines' problem. They will reroute you on to another flight for free.

If you are on a connecting flight, the process will be very simple. Get off the plane, walk to the boarding gate, re-board again.

You will not go through immigration/customs because you are connecting from one international flight to another international flight. You are not entering Malaysia.

    • Pay for a direct flight ahaha

      • I can’t tell if you’re joking or being a jack-ass. Not all destinations from Australia have direct flights…

        • Half half, if you book directly to a location it will give you a connecting flight which they will delay if the first flight is late, and if it departs they will sort it out for you. Usually they give you stickers and rush you through the priority everything to board the connecting flight.

  • +5

I recently had a transit in Kuala Lumpur flying Malaysian airlines. You do not have to clear customs or immigration. They don't have it like in Australia where when you get off the plane you have to go through immigration. When you get off the plane, you are in the terminal. Find out what gate your next flight is and go to it. You will have to go through security as security checks are done at the gates.

    • Many thanks for sharing @saw1971.
My fear is 50 minutes is not enough.
An hour overlay, and gate closes 10 minutes prior….50 minutes to exit plane, security check, find next gate, and next plane….

      • +2

You had the choice of not choosing such a tight connection. Am sure if you're not willing to take this connection, there will be tons more options available

      • +1

They sold it to you because they think there is enough time for the transit to happen. If you are worry, flag your concern with the malaysian airlines staff as soon as you landed and ask for help or direction fron then to your next flight.

I have done numerous transits like this without issue, albeit with Singapore airline at their massive Changi airport.

    • only when transiting to another international flight

  • What exactly do you want to complain about?

      • +5

1 hour meets the minimum connection time for INT. There is no issue and no reason to call and complain about the flight YOU selected and booked. You will more than likely have MH staff waiting for you with a sign to take you to your next leg.

        • -7

Its not one hour, it's 50 minutes.

Let's hope the staff will be there.

If not, my luggages will be in the next flight, whilst I slowly fight my body through the first plane, then the Security etc and find next gate in a big airport.

If I don't get there on time, they will do a count and find out that they have extra luggage but short of one person. And next? It just baffles me that they'd allow the same of this ticket. Why risk it?

          • +2

@Pumpkin_rrr: Then you shouldn’t have bought the ticket?!? It’s not MA ‘s responsibility that you don’t understand how transfers work…

          • +1

@Pumpkin_rrr: They will wait a few mins. Boarding starts 30 mins before for exactly this reason. It's not exactly a giant airport.

  • OP,
You don’t need to clear immigration or customs if you are transiting. Where are you going and what are your flight numbers ?

    • -4

MAS refuse to confirm about the need to clear immigration or customs. Sou I'd assume I'll need to.

      • +7

If it's an international flight and you're connecting to another international flight in the same terminal, why would you go through customs and immigration? At no stage are you entering Malaysia.

  • +2

Mate, are you transiting to Domestic or International?

If international, you have nothing to worry about!

  • Flight numbers?
Is it all on the one booking number?

  • +6

I've travelled plenty with one hour layover between flights. Never been a problem. You don't have to go through customs and as long as you're flying with the same airline they will make sure you don't miss your connecting flight. I've even had a 40 minute layover with different airlines in Belgium that code share and they ensured I didn't miss my flight.

Just make sure you do a through and through check in at the beginning of your journey and remind the flight crew about your connecting flight and they'll have one of them golf carts waiting for you to rush you to the next terminal. I've had Singapore airline and Emirates wait for me even when their first leg was delayed a bit and made up the difference in air.
Incase your first flight is delayed by over an hour they will arrange for an alternative. Don't stress much.

  • If you booked this flight in one booking, as far as I know, there's nothing to worry about. They will have instructions for connecting flights because they already know about it in advance. If there first flight is delayed, you'll be out in the next connecting flight. You shouldn't have to clear custom. There's nothing to complain about.

  • I think it may be co located in Victoria with the African Gang resolution unit……

  • +1

Perhaps this is your problem …
I once booked two flights, Melbourne to KL and KL to Kochi on Air Asia, with a short transit time. It was cheaper than booking Melbourne to Kochi (via KL). I had expected I could ask the airline to transit my luggage. They won’t! I had to exit through KL immigration, collect my luggage, clear customs, change floors, then check-in, etc
The other possibility is you are entering Malaysia on an international flight, then transitting to a domestic location that requires you clear customs and immigration in KL.
Either way, I suggest you do as I did, which is study the airport online so you know exactly the path to follow from arrival gate to immigration, customs, change floors, check-in, etc thru to departure gate, so you can do it quickly. Print a map and take it. And hope it’s not too busy. I did it successfully 3 times on that trip (Melb-Kochi, Kochi-Phuket, Phuket-Melb), but I now book thru flights.

    • Many thanks for your sharing. Really appreciate it. I am flying from SIN into KL then to domestic.
I will do as advised. I have been to KLIA several times albeit more than two years ago. Suffice to say I know it's a busy airport.
Am hoping MAS being a non-budget airline, they might look after me.
But I am the one taking the risk…. However short the distance is, 50 minutes is very tight.

      Sigh… joy of travelling!

      • +1

Did you book this on one ticket? If so if you miss the connecting flight its Malaysias problem and they will find another flight to your next destination.

I was on a flight with Malaysia from Perth to Hong Kong via KL. The Perth leg was delayed and I had a short transit time so I was ready to bolt it to the next gate but there was someone waiting for me when I got off with a new ticket on a later flight to HK.

I have never done it but if you are transferring to a domestic flight it makes sense that you will need to clear immigration. This can take a while at KLIA as Im sure you know.

        • -7

Yes, this is booked as one ticket…. connecting flight. I thought I was safe.
But not after MAS told me that I will have to clear Custom & Immi….
My luggage would end up in the second plane, whilst I lug my old body thru the tarmac_Hallsx2_Immi…..
They will freak out if they fine one extra luggage with no passenger on the plane….

An unnecessary stress they put thru the passenger and themselves.

          • +9

@Pumpkin_rrr: I think you are causing this stress yourself.

Just try and be brisk getting out of the plane and through immigration. If you miss the flight its not the end of the world, Malaysian will get you there one way or another. They wouldn't be selling this ticket themselves if they didn't think it was possible.

            Enjoy your trip!

          • @Pumpkin_rrr: If anything you will have more time than you think because if they have already loaded your luggage onto the next plane they will try and find you before they unload it.

But as others have said, you booked as one ticket so you will be fine. Either you will make it with the assistance of the airline, or if you don't make it they will book you on the next available flight.

Just calm down! The only reason people have issues in this situation is if they have made 2 separate bookings, then it is up to you to make the connection and if you miss it well bad luck.

      • +1

Tell us all if you bought one single ticket from SIN to your final destination or not.

If you have one ticket then Malaysian will get you to your final destination at no extra cost if you miss the connection. When you check in for the first flight you will recieve a boarding pass for the second.

We are confused because you are not being clear if you booked 2 separate tickets. If you booked 2 separate tickets then you stuffed up.

If you did book one ticket from SIN to your final destination then there was probably a choice of connecting flights.
All of those connecting flights are usually achievable but what is never made clear is that the very short layover times only work for passengers travelling with hand luggage only.

In your case, even with hand luggage the connection is not achievable because you still have to clear immigration and customs in KL.

You are correct that Malaysian should not have offered a 50 minute connection because they even say themselves the minimum connection time KL international to domestic is 60 minutes.
        https://mhcare.malaysiaairlines.com/faq/s/article/What-is-th…

Use that information they publish on their website to get them to put you on a later connection.

Forget all that rubbish about sitting on the plane. It will be a different aircraft and that nonsense is irrelevant. The fact is their website allowed you to book an unachievable connection and you need to be moved to a later connecting flight.

You need to contact them before you fly and change your connecting flight to a later one.
Dont wait until you arrive in KL because the airlines obligation is only to get you on the next available flight which might not even be the same day.

On the foot of the page link above there are 3 methods they invite you to drop a message.

        or call them
        Malaysia Airlines Global Contact Centre +60 3 7843 3000
        Singapore +65 6723 1009
        Australia 03 7843 3000

      • Right. I think I understand what you’ve done. Not sure why you are withholding information ??

So assuming I’m correct, you have booked:

        SIN-KUL

        KUL - HKT (lets say)

        All on MAS.

There is a 50 minute layover between flights. So you’ll need to move fairly quickly but that should be enough time. You won’t need to clear customs but you will need to clear security.

If you miss the second flight MAS will look after you as long as it is ONE booking.

      • You are flying Singapore to KL then to another domestic airport? Yup, you'll have to clear immigration, you likely have to clear customs as well. Source: Common sense, the the exact same thing would happen coming into Australia on an international flight then forwards into another airport.

I think you'll find that MAS would just chuck you on a another flight without much issue.

Why haven't you even told us whatthe final destination is?

  • +1

Can't really help you much if you don't disclose your final destination. Call the local MAS office, they will tell you what the routine is from your city. When you check in, wherever that is. Tell the check in clerk your final destination. If it's possible they will check your bags thru to that city. If not, the process is that you leave the plane, no exceptions. Take all your stuff with you of course. Make your way on the transit desk. And get your new boarding pass for the next leg of your trip. Btw. From memory MAS has an online live chat to help with issues from passengers. Furthermore it highly unusual these day to talk with a real person on a phone. Bob voyage.

    • -4

      Final destination is within Malaysia.
MAS confirmed that I will need to check thru Custom_Immi_Security.
I have called MAS and spoke to somoenoe in Fiji. They confirmed everything I said here.

My luggage would end up in the second plane, whilst I lug my old body thru the tarmac_Hallsx2_Customs_Immi_Security_Arrival_Departure …..
They will freak out if they find one extra luggage with no passenger on the plane….

An unnecessary stress they put thru the passenger and themselves.

      • +2

They will not freak out, its not as if this is going to be the first time they have encountered luggage without a passenger.

Your bag will be unloaded and put on whatever flight you end up on if you miss it.

  • +1

Oh. Spore to KL? No problems unless your on the first shuttle of the day. Suggest you change it so you're not racing around madly. Very easy. I guess you booked online.
    .

    • Unfortunately not first shuttle; it's mid-day….

  • If you're transiting from KLIA to domestic locations such as Penang, you'd have to clear immigration. You would've and should've known as a traveller that you are effectively entering a country and shouldn't have booked the domestic flight with little to no time buffer. Many of those international airports are always busy, unless you're flying into North Korea then I'd say 50 minutes of transit would be plentiful.

    • -3

Yes, thanks @mikuno. You understand my problem.
I am going to KUL, not North Korea.. (But NK is on my list!)
It just baffles me that MAS allow this on their reservation system.
Not all flights are available but someone they are happy to sell this combo.

  • +1

MAS booking system from SIN to Langkawi or Penang minimum time seems to be 1hr 20mins in KL.

My advice, just rebook your KUL to ‘domestic’ with air asia for about $30. And avoid the stress.

    • -3

Yes, thanks @Eeples, that's what I'm going to do, rebook.
It is funny/strange/hilarious that I avoided AirAsia all this time, and being faithful to MAS through and through……

      • +4

LOL don’t forget if you forfeit one of your sectors, all the remaining flights are cancelled. Why waste your $30 and rest of your flights

        • then there'll be another thread on "how to complain about Malaysia Airline cancelling my return flight?"

      • +3

Also, don't forget to leave even more time between your two flights and you'll have to clear immigration and customer and check in for the AirAsia flight before that close. Plus, if your first flight is delayed, you'll forfeit your AirAsia flight too.

Seriously, just listen to what everyone else have said on here.

        1. If MAS sells this ticket combo, that means it meets their minimal transit time.
        2. Some might actually be able to make this connection (e.g. Malaysia citizens who can whizz through immigration for example) and would prefer to spend less time at the airport.
        3. If you miss the connection, MAS will rebook you on a later flight.
        4. The transit time was disclosed before you pay for your ticket so you can't blame the airline for your ignorance. You had every opportunity to choose an alternative combo.

If you're just looking for validation on why you should feel angry, you've come to the wrong place.

    • -3

      Plus One for you.

Is this a joke? Where can i make a complaint about YOU.

  • +4

Too much whinging, entitled much eh?

  • For questions such use Quora. 😡

  • +1

I found this post and the responses quite informative. I don't travel often. What i don't get, is why OP was constantly negged.

I find traveling overseas a little stressful seeing as i don't do it often. I fear missing my flight or misunderstanding something or something going wrong. If i made a mistake like OP did, if I'd be stressing too…

    • +1

OP was constantly negged because they kept blaming the airline instead of admitting any sort of guilt.

And OP also was very slim on details even when asked multiple times

    • Constantly nagged

  • Happy to provide my experience and I also have the email for Malaysian airlines complaints at home. If I remember or if you pm me, I will send you the details.

Just to clarify OP: did you purchase these tickets on one itinerary? What exactly is the final destination and where are you departing from?

    The good news:

If so… when you arrive in KLIA they will be waiting for you at the gate. Likely to transport you directly to the next flight via a little airport buggy.

    The bad news:

If that initial flight is delayed they won't wait, they won't even let you try to board the next flight. They will provide you with a airport hotel voucher (inside the airport) and also a meal voucher. They will also give you the new flight boarding pass.

(Some might consider this good… i dont particularly think this is good practice. Like you said… why sell the ticket).

    My experience:

Flew Perth to KL to Chennai for a friend's wedding. The flight got delayed by about 30 minutes to 1 hour from Perth. When we arrived in KL around 30 minutes before the next flight, they had already offloaded me from the next flight and given us the boarding flight for a new flight the next day. I didn't even get a chance to try to run to the gate.

This was a problem for me because:

    1. My wife who was meeting me in KL had already boarded the flight - she didn't want to travel to India alone arriving very late at night. Since they were different itineraries, i had to fight them at the airport and over the phone to get them to change her flight. They still made me pay $100 (initially wanted $ for a new ticket) and were incredibly rude to the mrs when she asked to ne offloaded (she assumed i would make the flight).

When I say rude… I mean some female contracted ground staff member yelled and screamed at her in front of other passengers, saying she had to stay on the flight and could not leave the aircraft. Lucky a MA flight attendant told her to take her stuff and stand in the tunnel, that way they couldnt force her against her wishes to fly.

    2. I had paid for accomodation in Chennai.

In the end I couldn't be f'd making the complaint and just moved on with my life. But I don't trust them at all and will pay extra (+ travel time) to fly Qantas.

    • Thanks, will PM you now.

  • +2

The Russians had the same issue a few years ago. Ask them

  • -1

wow op you should schedule airline ticket timing since you seem to know it all

I have had connections that are 45 min apart.

You clearly don't know anything about flying or how airline scheduling works

  • +1

I just returned flight trip with MAS, 1 hour is doable. You can't leisure. I'm guessing the connecting flight is in the same main terminal.

OP, what you need to do is when arriving, inform the ground staff (they called "land staff") at the arriving gate (basically to inform that you have arrived and now on your way to next connecting flight). The staff will relay the message to the departing gate.

Not knowing your flight numbers, I'm assuming your connecting flight is at level 3 of the main terminal (KLIA). This is very doable.
If your connecting flight is at KLIA2 (which I assume your connecting flight is Firefly (MAS budget airline)), you will need to take the KLIA express. If this is the case, you must advise the ground staff.

If all flights in your itinerary are MAS flights, they will wait for you at the gate. If you have less than the required time, you will be given (similar to here) a fast pass for Immigration. They might also drive you from gate to train, train to immigration, immigration to gate.

You don't need to do a Custom clearance. When check-in at the counter, request to "transfer through" to your destination. This will make your life much breathable. If you don't ask for this, they will NOT do it for you.
You should also ask to escalate your check-in baggage as a priority transfer.

Overall, if your connecting flight is a MAS flight, you're in safe hand. Best you don't panic. They know where you are (not physically) because you're in their manifest list.

However if your connecting flight is Firefly (as mentioned above) you need to:
    1. Inform the ground staff
    2. Immediately head to the Immigration at the ground level
    3. Go to KLIA Express platform, buy 1-way ticket, catch the next train (it's only 1 stop as KLIA2 is the last stop).
    4. Head straight to Firefly check-in counter (unless you already had a boarding pass when you check-in in Australia).
    5. Follow their instructions.

Edit: adding a clarity after reading OP comment.

  • I work for airlines, this post made my day lol.

Maybe next time considering take a boat mate.

  • -3

Missing connection should be your last worry when flying with this airline….oops some MAS fanboys gonna get mad…:)

  • +1

grabs popcorn and seeing OP got negs in almost every reply..

  • A transit shouldn't normally require clearing the customs or immigration as long as the next leg of the flight is NOT in a terminal that requires you to go past the immigration/customs.

However, the second leg of your journey need not be carried out by the same flight (it often never is), and even if it were, you will still be required to get out of the flight, clear security, and board for the next leg of your journey. There are some rare exceptions to this, and there will be a clear announcement asking you not to alight from the aircraft in such cases in case you're flying to the next destination.

  • +1

I remember flying from Japan to Australia via Kuala Lumpur. The plane made a stop in Kota Kinabalu and passengers continuing on were allowed to stay on the plane. A steward came along and just checked passports to make sure no one was overstaying their welcome.

But if you're flying international to KL and then to a domestic destination in Malaysia then yes, you do need to clear Customs and Immigration. Why wouldn't you? Otherwise you're basically coming into the country without being documented.
