Cofee Machine - Need to Gift for Fathers Day

Hi,

I am looking to buy a good cofee machine, which does not cost an arm and leg, but the cofee tastes amazing as well.

Need it in time for Father's day. There was a deal on here for delonghini clearance but has limited warranty and many ppl complained of missing parts.

I need the cofee to be tasting like a proper cafe style

Please any recommendations

90% of making good coffee is having good beans.

    what's your budget?

    • Budget is around 200. Cheers I totally agree

NOTHING, I'd hazard a guess even used, will fit under that budget and get anywhere near your expectations.
Buy a Moka Pot and Grinder, even then you'll be stretching the budget

  • Do you want semi-automatic or completely?

    • I need something which is eat to use and easy to repair

  • Wait 2 days for Bing Lee 20% off
Buy Breville the Barista Express or other ones within your budget.

  • Also I have a 200 gift card at Myers.

I am not buying the Kmart one, reviews says the coffee smells of plastic

Yes but $10 is not enough for an accompanying coffee machine

      • My bad I thought it makes cover took.. lol

        • It is an excellent grinder though.

    • Yeah… this just grinds beans. It does not make coffee.

    Father's Day is in September?

    • Yep so plenty of time.

I have a Delonghi Citiz with milk frother. It's a Nespresso pod machine. Not the greatest in the world but could easily be had for around the $200 mark.

Ah, no, fathers day is 1st Sep.

        • OP is either American or got the dates wrong

          • +2

@kerfuffle: Yep! Thought that must of been the case! It's fathers day in June for the US and UK (at least) but for us in September

            • @KB2: No am not american and yes I know its in Sep for Aussies. Reason is - I wont be in Aus for Sept, going on a long trip overseas, 16th June is the International Father's day, so planning to gift him before I leave.

  • aldi has (recently had) a coffee machine. aldi generally have reasonable products - just suggesting this, research is required.

that basic breville you listed above , i bought one (the earlier version) to use in my office 8 years. it was good.

I bought a sunbeam machine off gumtree 6 month ago for home like this one currently on clearance for $129 @ TGG . it's really good.

I use the aldi dark roast ground coffee. and the results are good. when I splurge and buy ground from the "good" coffee shop then the quality/enjoyment of the coffee is better.

I'd recommend the sunbeam for $129. that gives you ~$70 for a ceramic grinder.

  • The entry level sunbeam or breville might do the job, but you definitely need a good grinder, like the breville smart grinder. I used to use a small spice grinder but it’s very inconsistent.

    • cheers, am really bending to buy this one now - Sunbeam EM 5000, what do you think? Is that an entry level machine?

      • Not being snobby, just realistic.
You're not going to get a Cafe quality coffee from that machine. It might make something superior to a Pod Machine after a lot of practice.
Note that you'll still need a grinder and a tamper cause I'm betting the Sunbeam comes with a flimsy plastic tamper.
That alone will go close to your $200 budget.

For something approaching Cafe Quality, you'll need to step up to the EM700 Sunbeam or the equivalent Breville (ES800 maybe?) at a minimum in the $600 range (just for the coffee machine).
My previous machine was the EM6910. It made decent coffee occasionally, but when it died we replaced it with an (still very "entry level") $900 Italian machine that makes great coffee frequently. (the failures can generally be attributed to impatience, ie insufficient pre-warming of the machine)
Once again, these are Machine only prices, add on Grinder and Tamper (the entry level Italian machines still only come with a crappy tamper) and you're into $1000 territory for an entry level setup capable of Cafe quality with a little practice.

        • Thank u so much. Thats crazy money for a cofee machine.

Also, Any ideas why a nutri bullet cofee grinder won't work.

          • @ozzyoi: Nutribullet is a cutter, not a grinder. (I'm guessing here, never actually seen a Nutribullet)

It has blades that will cut beans into random sizes and shapes.
A Grinder by design can generate a maximum size particle of coffee.

            Espresso coffee needs finely and evenly ground coffee for the following reasons;
            1) Fine-ness allows the water to extract the flavour from the grind, the water can only extract flavours from the outer surface. Coarse grind has less surface area, therefore less extraction.
            2) Evenness allows the coffee to be compacted to form a block (Puck) of coffee grinds that will allow water to slowly flow evenly through the entire diameter of the Puck, thereby ensuring that you're extracting flavour from all of the coffee.

Uneven grind will result in areas of high compaction and areas of low compaction, the water will take the path of least resistance through the low compaction areas, and as a result your coffee will be weak and flavourless as it will flow and extract only from the grinds in that area. while the compacted areas barely see any water.

I have the Breville The Duo Temp Pro Espresso Machine BES810BSS, both at home and at work. Once you learn it's temperament, you can get half decent coffee out of it. It's been quite durable too. But you need a great burr grinder, not a $55 cheapo because then your coffee machine money has been wasted. And also good beans, at least Lavazza or Victoria Mountain grown from colesworth.

  • A used Saeco Via Venezia would be under 200$. I have two of them, with fresh grind they make a good cup. They're stainless steel so they shine up well

Check this out it's a Delonghi Icona Espresso Maker under $200

    • Thank you")

    • some reviews says it has the milk frother, some say it does not. Any ideas if it has please?

      • The Delonghi one has a frother. The Sunbeam machine seems great and it has good reviews too plus it fits your budget. Sunbeam looks better than the Delonghi.

        • thanks, i am so confused. Both reviews are good.
I need some one who has used either to let me know which has a better taste. I rang few stores to get a demo, unfortunately the ones near me don't have any demos available :(

        • @kxiaoo - Do you know if any brand of cofee pods can be used for the Delonghi machine or does it have to be a specific brand?

  • This thread is so full of fail it's not funny…
