Christ why can't we have nice things. Origin Access, Xbox Pass and now this?

It's going to be worse than streaming services. Guess it's time to pick our allegiances.

    • +26

Guess it's time to start surfing the high seas again. I'm not picking sides in this shit. They can all die a slow death.

      • +1

Honestly, if it's not on Steam, it doesn't exist.

        • +22

If it's not on GoG, you don't own it.

          • -1

@steelpanther: you don't own it on gog either, when their servers go down so does your exe unless you backup every single game you own

          • +2

            @steelpanther: GOG > STEAM > EPIC STORE

            Convince me otherwise.

            • +8

@Moonlight Flower: GOG > STEAM > literally anything > EPIC STORE

            • -1

@Moonlight Flower: Epic gives free games every couple weeks, and you hate them for it? Some of these games are decent too, the witness, enter the dungeon next week, subnautica in week 1.

Better than the free games on steam, except for path of exile, which is pretty rad.

              Change my mind?

          • +5

@steelpanther: You actually do own your steam games. Australian law states that if you're not paying an ongoing subscription for the license then it is a perpetual license ie you own that license. Steam's TOS can say whatever they like, that doesn't overrule the law.

            • -2

@Davo723: Aren't we choosing to buy from Steam (USA) rather than an Australian entity?
We can have a law that says we own the world. Doesn't mean anything to anyone else.

              • @daydream: Nope it's an Australian store. They follow our laws. Hence why the Australian government forced them to introduce the refund system.

                • @Davo723: Steam is a US based company. Just because they are now pricing games in Aust $ doesn't make them an Australian store! The fact they flouted Australian law in the first place proves the point. They can "choose" to follow what the Aust government says (eg. collect GST, give refunds, etc) or they can tell the govt/Aust to shove it. The Aust government cant do anything to them outside of Australia (if they block Steam's IP address that's more likely to hurt Aust customers). Ultimately most foreign companies without a physical Aust presence like Steam choose to keep the peace with the Govt and be good corporate citizens (in public) but that doesn't mean they have to.

            • +1

@Davo723: Cite the law and section please.

          • @steelpanther: Ownership is overrated !! Demos from TPB are better until bugs are fixed

      • +1

Most of Ubi's games are GaaS these days, which pretty much rules out that option.

      • +3

Yep these games for services are another low point in gaming, along with microtransactions and loot boxes.

    • +6

tbh it's not too bad if they continue to add new release games to it, ill sign up for a month and play Ghost Recon Breakpoint and watch Dogs Legion but i wouldn't stay signed up every month unless i want to specifically 0play something.

    • +2

If they include new releases it's a pretty good deal. Sign up for the month of the new release and you get to play a new game for a lot less than buying it out right and then cancel after if there is nothing else that appeals to you.

      • +4

But what if you get the urge to play it again after a few months have gone by? Gotta fork out another tenner.

I like having games in my library, but I do see the value of playing the latest FoTM and then moving on to something else.

        • +1

It would probably be a lot cheaper to buy by then. Win-win

    • +3

Not that I intend to sub to any of them (my backlog is huge an I just play the same online games to death) but they're quite affordable. Years ago you used to have to pay $10 for an overnight rental.

    • You can still just buy the games individually like always.

      What's the big deal?
Ubisoft don't have any games on Game Pass anyway.

    • I too am not happy about the balkanization of the TV streaming services, and now of PC gaming. With consoles and iOS, there is a single store with all your content. But for PC gamers your purchases are going to end up split across 10 different services, each with a bloated client (eg Bethesda's loader gobbles up 720 MB of RAM) which needs to be started prior the the game's exe.

Corporate greed is not, and never has been, good for consumers (us ordinary folk).

  • Is it a streaming service or downloadable games?

    • Downloadable

      • Thanks for that. Wonder why it's not coming to console?

        • +1

Because Uplay doesn't exist on Console.

Ubisoft would have to strike up a deal with Sony or Xbox. Xbox already have their own service. Sony may in the future (or they might have one but I can't remember)

        • +3

The consoles already have their own subscription services which do similar and they don't allow third party competition on their platforms.

The problem is the world is currently in a subscription services war. Too many are trying to jump on the bandwagon and making content exclusive to their platform so the market is becoming too fragmented.

The concept is good value when one subscription has almost all content. But it's quickly getting to the point where each subscription only has 10% of the content and they all expect people to pay them all.

          • +5

@joelmuzz: On the contrary. Both Xbox and PS4 allow a third party subscription service, EA Access.

    • Stadia will have support for Uplay+ I believe.

  • +1

Anyone been able to find a full list of games available with this service?

    • +1

At the very least, I can see:
      Every Assassins Creed title
      Every Farcry title
Every Tom Clancys' title (The Divisions, Ghost recons, Splinter Cells, Rainbow 6s)
      Every Rayman title
      Every Prince of Persia title
      Starlink battle for Atlas
      For Honor
      Trials Rising
      Anno 1800
      The Crew 1 & 2
      Beyond Good & Evil (original)
      Child of Light

Does or will include the latest titles ie: Watch Dogs Legion, Division 2, Farcry new dawn, Ghost Recon Breakpoint

      • Given that I own pretty much every Ubi title I'd want to own thanks to bundles and discounts along the way, I might sign up for a couple of months to try out Legion & Breakpoint, but there's nothing on offer here at the moment that would make yet another sub worthwhile.

        • +1

Yup, I think that's what a lot of people will be doing as well.

  • While this is on 'sale' this is not a good deal or idea for gaming. Careful as this will lead to a very slippery slope.

    • +1

To more ways to play games?
What's the down side, I can still go out and purchase individual games yeah?

      • For now you can. I am looking into the long term future. As an analyst of trends in the stock exchange that is.

        • -1

We must have the same occupation!
          High five!

    • -1

'Free' trial for a month is not a good deal? For anyone who has time to play games now, this deal is at least decent. You don't even get a proper 1 month free trial with some consoles (i.e. XB1S) and even if you do, those trial codes are limited to new account(s).

Honestly, time box playing games is a good idea and quickly churn through games is good too. Not a big fan of Ubisoft games, but free trials, why not? At least confirm I made a right choice not to get those games.

  • Will I need to remain subscribed to continue playing The Division 2, after September? Or is it, you get it once, and own it forever?

    • +1

You can only access subscription content while subscribed.
It won't delete the saves though.

      • Cool. Thanks

  • It will be available on Stadia too!

What do you all reckon about stadia?

It seems to have copped alot of flack,
but the ability to play a whole bunch of games on a gutless computer, or my phone or tablet, (with the free tier) is pretty darn awesome. Its like getting a free powerful (although with latency) xbox one x or ps4 pro.

Also the picture in picture gaming thing seems pretty cool

    • +4

If NBN worked well it would shake things up. The fact they can't be bothered launching in Australia speaks volumes for the state of the NBN rollout.

      • +1

NBN are systematically against gaming, period.

    • Stadia is not coming to Australia any time soon, don't worry about it.

      • Aww man that stinks!

    • Hate the idea. We don't have the framework to support it yet (NBN is a joke even at the best of times) and won't for a long time. You won't ever own the games and access can be pulled at any time (for literally any reason). If you lose internet connectivity it's basically a nice paperweight.

Also PiP has been possible for forever. Not a big achievement by any means.

      • Not owning the content hasn't stopped people flocking to Spotify, iTunes, Netflix, etc and giving up content they own CDs/DVDs/Bluray discs, etc

  • +1

In the near future Geforce Now Monthly Subscription + origin + Uplay+ "Something else".

  • +1

    Do I need a credit card ?

    • Not for this free try period, well it let me register without adding one anyway.

  • Why does mine say it's $1 a month/$12 a year?

When I check out with PayPal it wants to charge me $1…

    • +1

Mine says that too, but after you click pay on PayPal, it goes to another screen that changes to $0 and I can confirm it didn't charge me at all.

      • I click through to pay with PayPal but it still tries to charge me $1, did you go through the website or the desktop app?

        • +2

Yeah, it said $1 the whole way through PayPal but when it redirected me to Ubi; it changed to $0 and didn't charge. It is confusing, but it won't charge you even though it says it will (until the very last screen).

          I used mobile Chrome.

  • +2

I love these services, saved so much money. I wanted the new Anno but know I will finish it in two days and then never touch it again, instead of spending 60+ dollars, I'll clock it on this and it costs me nothing.

    • Yep. From now on, when Ubi releases a game; I'll just subscribe to this for that month. I finish a game the first week and then never touch it again, like you. Makes heaps more sense.

      • Yeah I did it for the last big battlefield release, got my weekends worth of it and then cancelled.

  • This would be great if I could afford it. Ubisofts 2020 lineup is excellent.

  • -2

Just don't see much value in this. I mean, Ubisoft is not EA and still produces some enjoyable content, but I just can't see myself playing enough of the catalog. I'd be more interested in having the option of paying $2-3/month to subscribe to a particular title, so if I'm only interested in playing say Far Cry and Anno, I'd only pay $6/month, but if I wanted to have access to 10 titles, I could pay the $20/month fee for the full access subscription.

    • Come and go when new games come out. $20 to play a brand new AAA game for a month is a bargain.

      • I guess it comes down how often and how many games one plays. Time constraints would mean I'd struggle to finish a game within two or three months. At that cost, I could have almost just bought the game outright. A per-title subscription would be a more viable option for me. Thought this was a legitimate consideration, so unsure why I got negged…

        • I completely understand that everyone is different, mate. I'm not one of the ones who negged you. :)

  • +1

I just signed up and the latest Anno 1800 isnt available.
Apparently theres a bug or technical issue at the moment.
    https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/uplay-launches-with…

    • Lol? Man that is the only thing I wanted.

  • So, it's only $12 per year? o.O

    • Is it actually? That's pretty good value. I'd pay that rather than get a free month.

Edit: Just signed up and I'm pretty sure it just says that for the trial. You can't opt to sign up for a year and subsequent months are $20/month.

  • +1

This is the biggest joke. I've been trying to join for the past 3 days, countless times. Everytime I get to the final stage, I get "404 page not found". My credit card has been charged $19.95 x 3 times, and $1.00 x 6 times. All "pending" of course, but infuriating still.

    • That blows. Worked when I used Paypal.
