Is 250GB at 12/1 Enough for Netflix?

I am considering the following setup.

Moving to a 250gb 12/1 wireless plan which will only have our TV/Netflix connected and some very low Pc browsing.

All mobiles in the house will use 4G mobile data as we all have enough data and never go over.

So is 250gb enough if we watch 3hrs of netflix per day?

Wife has 70Gb mobile data.
I have 20gb mobile data with a shared data sim.
I have a 20gb Telstra data sim with Peace Of Mind data that is not being used (still under contract)

I am looking to sign up to the Exetel $39.99 plan which now comes with the mighty Netcomm 4G modem Selling at $240 online.

    Should be ok.

Go for it. Less time on TV at worst.

    2-2.5GB/hr = 6-7.5GB/day = 180-225GB/month

Close, and won't help if you have a weekend binge of a tv show

But who the hell actually watches 3 hours every single day?

I reckon it'll be easily enough.

      • We do quite easily between 2 of us, probably more than 1.5 hours each p/d as my husband's choice of shows are completely opposite to mine.

          EVERY. SINGLE. DAY?

          without fail?

          • +1

@Skramit: yeah for the weekdays it will average out to that between both of us, I put it on for background noise while I am browsing on laptop / cooking / doing dishes. On our days off it will be quite a lot higher as we don't stay out long.

@MeesusEff: Well simple solution, don’t use it for background noise? Just change your habit slightly. Problem solved.

              • +2

@Skramit: why should I? I have unlimited data. I am just saying that its easy for 2 people to watch collectively 3 hours of netflix p/d averaged over a week. Besides, people come back to their homes to relax, not to place restrictions on themselves. If OP is willing to do that then good for him and he can go on the cheaper plan.

                • @MeesusEff: I also like doing things with the TV on, either sitting in front of the telly or doing various tasks and walking in on the TV every now and then :P

If you think of it, it's just about 2 movies or episodes of a show, including all the ad breaks on normal free channels.

                • @MeesusEff: Oops thought u were the op coz of your reply.

          • @Skramit: That's me. We watch 2 hours everyday together and missus probably watch more with her personal shows.

Roughly 3 hours per day on average I think.

I stream either YouTube or Netflix for at least that amount.

I do other things while it's on so it's mainly for noise, colour and movement.

      • I reckon it's easily possible for a fair few people.

        At least because of weekends.

  • Been wondering the same thing myself for s holiday house. With 12/1 plans now hard to come by I was looking for the cheapest options out there. I considered this 12/1 250 GB plan but was concerned about going over. To be honest we are only there about 6-8 days a month but the kids watch a lot of Netflix plus i stream apple TV a bit also and will be doing 4k when we upgrade the TV there at some point. So figured an unlimited 50/20 plan via exetel was the better option.

    • For internet at my holiday house, I have an unlocked Huawei 4G modem (bought second hand, with an external antenna) that lives there, and I just go to any Woolworths or Coles supermarket and buy whatever SIM card is currently on sale for half price as and when I need it.

The last one I purchased (about two weeks ago) was an Optus pack offering $20 for 45Gb or so, which lasts a month. Usually, though, there's something on sale for $10 or $15.

The only real hassle is that you need to sign up as a new customer each time, and it sometimes takes an hour or two to become active, although it's often only 15 minutes.

Also, I usually use my mobile phone to do the signup - I find that signing up using the new SIM card itself in the modem doesn't always work.

It's a lot cheaper than $40 every month, but it may not suit your usage.

  • I used to have 200GB and it constantly ran out just watching Netflix (non-UHD) within the first 3 weeks of the month.

It might be worth starting with a plan at that level, and if you find it isn't enough after a couple of months, increase your plan. It seems fairly easy to upgrade a plan (but not easy to downgrade)

  • I recently had this discussion with someone at work about the Netflix data usage. I play a couple of online games, the same that I ran a 15Gb a month dongle on.

Without downloading at all this month I've run over 400Gb, with a binge or two in there.

If you watch SD Netflix it will be plenty.

  • I watch about 4-5 hours a week on HD - easily would come under that number
If you're addicted to netflix everyday then you need a 500gb/unlimited plan. Casual users should be fine

  • I checked and currently netflix eats about 2.5gb per hour. Which means thats only 100 hours limit per month.

  • 12/1 speeds are so variable, as soon as I got NBN and tried it out I upgraded to the second tier. It was slower than my old ADSL :/

    Second tier was fine though.

    • Yeah true but it was fine for what i needed given it was a holiday house. I was more about price than speed there. Its a shame that NBN is making it hard to find plans that are still reasonably priced for casual users. IM currently waiting on a breakdown of my usage from Tangerine Telecom to see how much data i used each month for the last 6 months so i can get an idea of what i need.

Does anyone know what telco Exetel uses for their 4k service? Assume its Optus given they use them for mobile?

      • Do you mean 4G? It’s Optus.

I also just need a basic connection as well. All we do is youtube and nextflix at best. Cheapest ADSL/NBN I found was at $55. So $15 saving is significant over 12 months. Also the Netcomm 4G modem is great. If it has a resell value if $120 after 12 months then potentially the plan it self becomes $30 per month.

        • Yeah sorry meant 4G. Cant seem to edit the post now. My only issue with 4k is reliability. My wife has Optus and reception isnt great at the house. So have concerns about how reliable the connection will be.

Next likely option will be exetel 59.99 for 50/20 unlimited. Bit more than i was hoping to have to pay but seems about the cheapest on the market atm.

          • @hazzad: You wrote 4K again hahaha.

Belong is $55 per month on their unlimited plan.

            • @TomGum: Oh man…i noted the first one but didnt catch it the 2nd time wrote it.

Interesting. So is Belong the Cheapest 50/20 unlimited on the market? I was looking at Exetel 50/20 500 gb for 54.99 but if Belong is $55 for the same i might go with them. Only $5 more than what im paying now.

  • It is not enough. Data is one thing that you cannot control.
Even when the devices are off, they are consuming something.
I work with technology and you have no idea the sh1t behind everything.
I would not take the risk

  • I have taken the leap of faith and jumped on board with $39.99 (250GB) plan with Exetel.

I will set a data speed limit on Netflix at 4mbps and see how that goes for a week.
