Telstra Increases Data on All Home Bundles, Min. 2x

661

Basically what it says in the title. Telstra's done a massive increase in data on most of their home bundle plans.

2Gb => 5Gb - $78 (Homeline Basic)
25Gb => 100Gb - $98 (Homeline Ultimate)
100Gb => 200Gb - $88 (Homeline Basic) - $128 (Homeline Ultimate)
200Gb => 500Gb - $148 (Homeline Ultimate)
[Prices after Telstra T-Box Deselected]

Seems like they're actually picking up compared to other ISPs, especially considering all the unmetered content. Great news for me since I was already planning to switch over to one of these in the next few weeks :)

so this sort of brings it in line with the rest of the comp?

    • +7

Agreed. I'm with optus, so I'm used to dealing in TB, not GB.

      • +2

and service disruptions and high latency or is that a thing of the past?

        • +1

ive had optus cable for years and never had a problem other than email not working for a day a few months back

        • +4

lol ditto, when I was at my parents house they had Optus DSL, I had Bigpond DSL also coming into the house. On Bigpond I got 1-2Mbps higher sync and a steady 600-700KB/s download. They on the other hand struggled to consistently hit 500-550KB/s and had pretty unreliable latency. Sure the BigPond was a little bit dearer but at least there was enough backhaul capacity from the exchange and not congested like Optus were.

        • +2

I'm on the optus fusion cable plan since xmas, and it has been excellent so far never had a problem with it. $100 for 1TB/mo including phone line with unlimited free calls to everything except international.

I was on the speedpack but have just recently cancelled it as it wasn't worth it for me (still getting speedpack speeds though just quietly lol). Here is a test done just now (probably the worst time of day to do it)…
          http://www.speedtest.net/result/1329998062.png

I've been on bigpond cable a couple of yeas ago, it was ok, but speeds were pretty crap, and 12GB/mo was a total joke.

        • here is mine, but mine is not plug to modem directly thru router

          http://www.speedtest.net/result/1330161490.png

        • Well yeah, it varies throughout the day. That last test I posted was right after school, so it is a bad time, pretty much the lowest I get.

If I test now I get better speeds, since a lot of people are having dinner or commuting right now…
          http://www.speedtest.net/result/1330181566.png

This is just run from one of my PCs, with at least one torrent running on another PC and also simultaneously uploading my entire mp3 collection to Google music beta (which has been going 24/7 since Friday, and is only half done).

I am impressed with your upload speeds though, but your pings, not so much.

        • -1

          haha good luck uploading

yeah i have 1 torrent PC that's on for all day(24/7)

        • yea dont have choices. I am one of those suckers got owned by telstra. they are the only provider in my area. I got Ultimate, which should be 100mbps DL and 2mbps UL. As you can see, not so much with the ping meaning i am further from exchange?

you should use optusnet's speed test, below is what i get(same computer using via router):
          http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/1254718009.png

      • stumo whats the deal with picking up speedpack speeds? A glitch, or an exploitable loophole? (:

        • Nah I only cancelled it yesterday, so I guess it hasn't propagated through the system yet.

On non-speedpack I get a solid 20Mb/0.5Mb, the extra speed just wasn't worth the 20 bux extra per month. Its the difference between waiting for 10 minutes, vs waiting half an hour for a BD rip lol.

        • haha lol really stumo

          i find speedpack awesome

Max download at around 5megabytes/s for me

But mine is an extra $15 per month(existing customer)

        • Yeah I was averaging around 5MB/s down I guess. It was good for a while when I was getting 9MB/s on Thundernews, but it has gone back down to 5 again. Without speedpack I get a constant 2.2MB/s. I did ask about the $15/mo option, but I'd have to sign up to it for 2 years to get that price so meh.

      • ^ This same here

        With optus as well

        1TB plan + phone —> $104

        • Is this deal still available, I can't find any sign of it on their website? Only found 1TB + phone for $129?

        • +2

          @ wildesy

they had the had the $129 for $99 a while ago(think it was November 2010) LINKY

It was good because on December the $129 Plan was 1TB Fusion
and the $99 plan was 500GB Fusion

SO people who were on the $129 plan for $99 got the 1TB plan for $99, in other words an extra 500GB

and the $15 is from speedpack (for existing customers)

  • awesome! how much does it cost tho?

    • Added prices, there are more differences in the phone plans but you can check them all out after the jump :)

  • suppose this is only for new connections??

    • +5

No. Existing customers can sign up to these bundles right now.

There is no contract break fee as long as you stay with Bigpond (you are free to change plans each month if you like).

      • Deleted.

      • Not true. Just spoke to them and you lose any discounts you previously had. Can only upgrade within the previous plans.

      • +1

Just got off the phone with a very friendly telstra rep. Upgrading my cap to 100gb (with the t-box and home reach) cost me no extra nor did i have to reset the 24-month period of my contract :)

an extra 75gb each month for 0 cost on my part is a pretty great deal

        • Hi
all the new Bundles, are recontracted for 24months. If you were not told this, you should phone back. I am 100% sure

        • Good luck with that, when your trying to explain it over the next 5 consecutive bills which are incorrect.

    • thats good its available to existing customers ;-p

  • Not reflected on their website atm.

  • -1

Thanks for letting me know! Contacting them now!

  • pathetic 5gb a month

    • +14

Yep, even the Amish demand a minimum of 50gb per month.

  • +1

    Still with their stupid bundles.

    • +3

And their stupid 24 month contracts.

  • +3

Wait another month for the data to increase on the standalone plans. The $88 for HLB and 200 Gb minus T-box isn't too bad though.

    • I've actually got HLB and 50gb Cable, paying $52/mth plus calls (~$3-4) so extra $36 for 150gb would be ok if I needed that much data. Could use a tad more so yeah, would be nice to see data increases on standalone plans!

      • You do alright then. I'd be happy for 50gig. I'm on on 25Gb ADSL standalone + HLB for $60.90.

  • 500GB plan, almost enough.

    • +3

man wth do you download, we're on the tpg unlimited plan and we (5 people) only manage to do around 400gb a month

      • +3

        Porn.

  • +5

Ah excellent, I kept going over the bloody 25GB limit! As for those who don't like Telstra yes they're not as good at times, but personally speaking, Telstra is the ONLY provider who offers ADSL 2+ here. Everyone else only has ADSL 1, so they can be useful.

    • Mmm. Telstra is the only one that provides ADSL2+ to our area without discrimination. Westnet and a few others call it "adsl2+ reach" basically meaning they charge heaps for stuff all.

      • +1

That's cause Telstra are the only ones with a DSLAM and so Westnet have to pay Telstra Zone 2/3 wholesale prices, hence it's expensive. The whole Zone 1/2/3 system is horribly corrupt though - basically if Telstra are the only ones in the area, they label it Zone 2/3 so they can charge more. Has nothing to do with whether it actually costs them any more. The ACCC should've been on to them ages ago.

Anyway, rant over. Safe to say I hear you and I'm also in a Zone 2 area (despite still being Melb Metro for all other intents & purposes).

    • same with my parents area, telstra are one of the few ones that offer it. Has been a good quality service though, it was active less than 24 hours after sign up!

  • bummer, im not on a home bundle, whatever it is.

Got phone, bigpond and foxtel all through Telstra but I think they are all separate bills.

getting real sick of this shitty 50gb download limit too, 100 would be nice.

    • +1

Call up the number, see if they can fix you up :o If you're already a customer for all of that it shouldn't be too hard?

      1800 335 476 - Some Telstra number :P

    • +4

So you're paying full whack for each service? What kind of Ozbargainer are you??? ;)

      • its all done in my parents name. I think we get like $20 off the internet each month for having the other services. Called them a while ago, because we were on 25gb plan and they upgraded us to 50gb but said we had to forfeit the free local calls.

Ill get them to call later and see what they can do

        • +1

          Mm, that's weird. Good luck.

        • +2

From reading on Whirlpool results via phone are bit patchy much better via chat or upgrading yourself via the webform. I changed my folks account a while back via chat easy as pie as long as you have all the personal deets (DOB etc) then they don't know that they're not talking to the account holder. http://bigpond.custhelp.com/app/chat/chat_launch

        • thanks melmac, is that chat like an IM sort of thing? I will do that later tonight. gotta study now.

        • +2

Ouch… depending on how long ago you upgraded the internet plan. AFAIK the upgrade should have been free as they discontinued the 25gb plan and replaced with 50gb…

Looks like they downgraded your phone to do the free upgrade? =/

      • Might not be paying full wack. You do get the $10 discounts etc. for having multiple services. We have no use for telephone so the plans work out more expensive for us. When I got our cable Internet installed I took the seperate 200gb package and the absolute cheapest telephone package, I only took telephone as it then gave free installation so it worked out cheaper in the end. Once the contract period is up on the phone I will cancel that.

So depending on your needs the packages are not always the cheapest option.

  • I'm on the old $159 bundle and I'm going to see if I can upgrade to the new $159 bundle without cancelling my contract. Has anyone had experience with this?

    • Theres a link for it at the top of the site.

      Request a bundle change: https://help.telstra.com/app/home_bundles/c/1/p/5/b1

      Good Luck :)

      • I'm already in queue with Telstra online support so I'll see how I go with that. I can't be bothered digging around for my account number.

Has anyone done it this way to upgrade from the old bundles to new using that automated one though? If live support tell me to GTFO I'll try that.

        • Emailed a rep who called me back on same day. I was on an old 25gb bundle and he upgraded me to 100gb with NO other change to my contract at all. very happy!

    • You can upgrade, but you will need to recontract for another 24 months

  • From my experience with Telstra, usually they will renew your contract to another 24mth and cancel the current one, theres no fee charged though. But it just mean u'll stuck with them for another 2 years

    • This isn't true, just confirmed with Telstra rep that contract length doesn't reset. Even got the reference number of the call in case they try to tell me later on that it does.

  • +7

For anyone not on Telstra, this is a time to celebrate!

Generally Telstra raising their data allowances indicates that in the near future (give it a few months), other ISP's will make their plans even better.

Of course if you're on Telstra, you can definitely celebrate too. Heck, everyone dance!

  • Go Telstra Go!

  • I like being on Telstra. The unmetered content they provide as well as reliable internet connection is pretty good.

    • +4

for Telstra - this is a good deal
Why neg a Telstra deal if you would rather go on Optus

    • +4

For those of us that are only able to access high speed internet through Telstra, this is a great deal. Definitely not worth a neg.

  • +12

I contacted Telstra and decided not to increase.

    BEWARE of these 3 things:

    1. You forfeit any 'free family' calls you may have on your account. e.g. Free calls between your home line and mobile or if you have 2 mobile phones, the free calls between them. For me, this is a deal killer.

    2. You must recontract for a new 24 month period.

    3. Paper bills will incur a new $2+ charge per bill. Not an issue for me as I currently use online billing. But for those who like a printed record, be aware.

The Telstra consultant was very helpful and explained this quite clearly so I could make an informed choice.
He also said I could increase my data on the current (older) bundle plans, keeping the free inter-calls and no re-contracting but that would be an additional charge per month.

    • +2

Just had the same conversation. I currently get a $20 per month discount, and was told that I would forfeit this discount if i were to upgrade to the new plans. Way to treat your current customers. Load of cr@p.

      • Is that $20 for adding mobiles etc to the same bill? Got 3 Telstra mobiles in the family.. Was looking forward to the discount.

        • No it was basically an added discount provided by a doorknocker in the area when I agreed to switch over to them.

        • Ah. Alright then. Thanks :)

      • u either keep $20 discount or get heaps more data allowance, they do give u a choice.

    • -4

      yep same deal here
how much did they say to increase data on the older bundles?

      • +3

Didn't even bother to ask, as from memory it was over $20 to get to 200GB. It's a bullsh1t way of doing business, treating your current customers worse than your new ones.

        • Seems to be the way everyone is doing business though.
Virgin offer their 3 months free deals only to new customers.. Existing customers might get 2 months free if they threaten to leave!

      • +1

I didn't ask - but from what I recall it would be $20+

        • +1

not worth it I just go over 100gb

          cheers mate

    • If you're on the higher end bundles, the free calls doesn't matter anyway since all calls from home phone to mobiles/national are unlimited. Will only affect calls from mobiles

    • +2

Just found out that when I joined the last bundle I had $20 credit (2 mobiles) and a $10 bundle credit, so $30 credit per month. That means to sign up to this I would be recontracting and paying $30 more per month.. almost worth a neg. Also I currently get $150 per month free family calls… not looking good.

    • Hmmm I asked about increasing my data limit and was told I needed to upgrade the whole bundle. I am sure if I upgraded my data limit I should be paying less based on the current price of the 50G plan.

FYI for others Telstra's bill by email (PDF) is far better than their previous online billing option as you can keep your own record of bills. The online version only shows the PDF for the current month.
      https://help.telstra.com/app/email_bill_request

    • Just got off the phone, I have no discounts so removal of them did not affect me, also the rep said that my contract period DOES NOT reset (I asked them specifically to make sure). Stuck with them for only 1 more year!

      • all the new bundles are recontracted for another 24months. Phone back & verify

        • +1

ill wait till they complete the upgrade then ask them again when my contract expires. then if they say its been reset to 24 months again ill decide whether i wanna deal with it or fight back. I know the latter option will be hard but i believe!!!

  • +1

So I'm currently on the $159 old plan (with 200gb) and I went on Telstra online chat and the rep said they would have to re-contract me. If I do it through the online thing then it never mentions re-contracting, but I have a feeling it might still do it automatically.

I don't really mind re-contracting but I also have foxtel in the bundle and I want to ditch foxtel as soon as possible.

I'm wondering if I could re-contract only the bundle part and not the foxtel part, I guess I'll have to call Telstra when I have a few hours to waste.

The thing is though that you used to be able to move between bundles without re-contracting, I'm wondering if there is a way for this to apply when moving between the old and new bundles.

    • +2

I was told they have new T & C's for these new plans, hence why you cant switch between them freely. Re-contracting your bundle shouldn't affect your foxtel, however it would probably mean you lose your combo rewards bonus.

      • Well technically I'm on the "HOME TV ULTIMATE Bundle - 200GB" which is basically the $159 + foxtel.

I think my situation is pretty specific so I'll have to call them up.

    • +1

got through on the 1800 number straight away after waiting for 20mins + on the chat window before being 1st in line, only to be told the call was cancelled. (not by me)

      • +1

waiting for 20mins + on the chat window before being 1st in line, only to be told the call was cancelled. (not by me)

        Same thing happened to me.

I try to enquire about purchasing their product and step one in the process is to piss off the potential customer. Typical Telstra customer service.

  • +5

sounds like this deal not all its cracked up to be, alot of traps.

    • +1

You read the "Telstra" bit, right?

The promise of iced water is always alluring for those stuck in hell.

  • +1

I called up there are new T&C's which include emailed bills as standard now, also you lose your family bonus if you have this linked with another phone or mobile number.

  • -5

Telstra is not competitive. Their rates are nowhere near that of competition. In addition, they screw things up at a frequency beyond compare. The problems I have had with them have been insane, from them not reading their plans properly when moving my phone line (they looked at my neighbour's house, concluded it had four connection, and chose to put the request in the "too hard" basket), to downright harrassment of phoning me about 13 times after I left them (which only stopped when I changed number). This was before the "do not call register". Each person you speak to when you have a problem tells you a different story.
    Not a fan.

    • if it wasn't for its size it would flounder and die. I think a lot of customers are also complacent. they were with telecom and so they just stay with telstra.

  • +4

I don't know why people are negging this. There is nothing inherently bad about these new plans - they are all upgrades for the same price. If you don't like them, stay with your old plans.

    • +1

      1) compared to other providers (well ,at least Optus) the deals are lame.
      2) the upgrade is an upgrade not even reaching the standard of other providers
      3) peoples experience at getting the upgrade possess risks as well as losses of current benefits
      4) peoples experience with customer service is negative

true, there is nothing inherently bad about these deals.

there is also nothing inherently bad with a loaded gun.

      • +2

It is not 'lame'. There are people for whom Telstra is only option (people who are behind a RIM, for instance).

      • I am with Telstra/Bigpond, agree with points 1-3, in particular point 3, however I find their customer service very good, since I came back to them about 2 years ago (optus and virgin in between).

      • I have both Telstra and Optus cable. The BP cable is faster, but not by a lot.
I had both cables come down due to a tree branch falling from a storm. Optus came the same day I rang up and put the cable back up (2 hours I think it was), and even though the BP cable was working (but on the ground), they came out and cut the cable, and it took 3 weeks of long calls and an official complaint to get them back to reinstall the cable. The offered one month free (considering it was off most of the time that didn't seem that generous), plus later an extra month. I'm yet to see either and that was back in Feb.

Despite that, I think BP is the better of the two. From past experience I wouldn't rely too much on their mail servers.

    • Why people are negging this? I am currently paying $60 all-up for my phone and internet, and getting 20GB/month (at whatever time). Perfect connection, no issues. Telstra charges $80 for 5GB…
How is this a bargain???? That fact that it is cheaper than what they used to charge does not make it cheap.

Did I mention how Telstra stuffed up their records, such that they thought I was on a different exchange (8km from my house) than I was actually connected to? They changed my phone number TWICE because of it (once when they hooked it up after I moved house, once when they moved it back to the exchange I was actually on). Do you know how many Telstra staff I had to speak to to get it fixed? Only advantage of this was that Telstra's sales reps lost my number after the first change, so they stopped harassing me.

      • As per the comments above, not everyone has the choice of cheaper providers. For those on a zone 2 or 3 exchange Telstra & Telstra wholesale are usually the only options, so increased bundles are a fantastic thing.
