Can harddrive buffs chime in with some thoughts on quality/reliability compared to other standard desktop external drives? For example AU$226.93 Western Digital (https://www.amazon.com.au/Elements-Desktop-Hard-Drive-WDBWLG…). Would these more likely be SMRs compared to Western Digital?

    IIRC these drives are SMR, looked down on for a number of reasons. Not sure if it's just the ones labelled Archive though, if someone knows better?

    • Thank you. …will stick with the Western Digital Elements then. Someone else was saying WD Elements 8TB drives are sometimes helium drives.

      Really enticing $/TB metric though.

      • One issue with these is if there's a problem they'll likely ask you to ship it back to the US. Too hard for me.

        For HDD's i always buy local for this reason, and preferably from OW so i can just take it back physically and get another one.

  • Yeah these have got the "shingles" well most of them anyway. Always a good probability with the Seagate 8TB desktop drives. Put the lowest spec in these models.
