UK or Europe travel help

Hi

We are Family of 2 adults and 2 kids(1 & 4years) are planning for a trip for 2 to 3 weeks to UK or Europe next year. What would ur suggestions be which countries should we visit.

Planning in August.

We like to stay and experience a country rather than touching each country for 1 or 2 days. Also rather than talking public transport we prefer self drive but that can be bypassed as well.

Folks please share your thoughts and itinerary if any. That would be great and very helpful.

PS-I haven't seen a lot of Europe just visited Switzerland and Greece till now.

Thanks!

This is a big question. I assume you have already done some research on your own given the wealth of information you can find by googling - what are your thoughts?

Europe is 56ish countries and 750 million people. Perhaps narrow down your scope a little?

    • Lolz true.. Not too cold places.. N kid friendly as well

  • How long is a piece of string?

  • What time of year

Costa del sol or south of France, what’s the budget? Or time of year? What interests do you have? This will change things a lot.

      Kidd friendbdly
      Moderate budget

  • For such a short trip, and since you’re traveling with young kids, I’d stick to the UK. Easy to get around by rental car and public transport, and relatively ‘safe’ and familiar. There are lots of kid-friendly options to see like the London museums and attractions, Harry Potter Studios, Legoland, Paulton Park (Peppa Pig World!) and Brighton or Blackpool Pier. You can also get the train up to Scotland or fly to Ireland quite cheaply. When travelling with kids, I find you’re better off starting with a family- friendly ‘home base’ like an AirBnB, and planning your schedule around that.

But you're asking other people to tell you where to go without any apparent planning of your own?

  • op with your time frame 2 to 3 weeks i would recommend 2 to 3 countries. Try some where cheaper and warmer than UK too. perhaps do a few days in Uk and then take ferry or the euro tunnel to France and head to Spain and Portugal. Beware of car rental insurance policies some don't cover over countries unless you tell them in advance and pay extra. Also fuel costs are high as well as the many tolls. I am considering doing the same for 3 to 4 weeks but prefer renting a car for 1 week in uk then flying out from uk to southern Europe and renting another car there. can someone recommend some good value prepaid local sim cards with a lot of data for UK and Portugal for a few weeks?

    • Thnx sounds good

This will be controversial… leave the kids with their grandparents. Kids that age will not remember anything of the trip later in life, and you will have a lot more fun without them. I travelled for 3 months to UK when my kids were 10 and 7. The then 10yo is now 25, and can remember a lot of the trip, the then 7yo cannot remember anything of the trip except what she has been told about.

Seriously, you could have a fantastic trip the 2 of you, and it would probably be better for your long term relationship than dragging small children around the place.

My recommendation is Northern Italy (Florence and north) and Spain, from Barcelona and down the coast to the south. You and the misses could have an absolute ball!

Couldn't agree more. Travelling Europe with a 1 and 4 year old? Virtually pointless IMO. If the grandparents babysitting isn't an option, I'd just save the money and go much much later.

      • I aahh…. But I need to go somewhere I would be going insane by next year if I don't get a holiday.. Just kidding

    • I wish I could leave with the grandparents… But no choice

      • then stay in Aus, go to a family holiday park near a beach and just enjoy the time off. Make it an annual tradition with them until they are older, then venture further afield. Seriously, dragging them o/s when they are young is expensive, you won't enjoy it as much as you otherwise would and they will be just as happy on home soil because small kids just want your time.

  • Euro Disney in Paris, Europapark in Rust Germany and Legoland there are a few. Amsterdam is quite a sight. Hire a Tesla and enjoy the Autobahn while the speed is still not capped as this will not last forever. Beginning of August is bad for crowds. Venice is pointless as one gets trampled in peak time. Brugge in Belgium always has bits of room.

  • What interests do you have? This will change things a lot.

  • Hey, I've read what has been posted so far and have filled out the getcluey explorer with moderate to warm temperature which is safe and has some kid friendly activities (theme parks & aquariums) for a August 2020 travel period. You can easily adjust it and add more activities you are keen to do and fill out some of the other factors.

It comes out with "There are 162 locations in Europe departing from Sydney with beautiful weather in August which are safe with Amusement Parks!"

    Check it out! - https://www.getcluey.com/en/explorer/Safe-Temperature15To31-…

Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Croatia etc will all be very busy and expensive at that time of year, but there's a reason they're popular! Croatia is a personal favourite and there's so many great places in Spain and Portugal that you can always find somewhere a bit quieter.

If I was to throw a curveball option at you, I'd suggest Romania. I'm a huge fan of the scenery and a roadtrip through the Carpathians and visits to the Transfagarasan and Transalpina will blow your mind! Also recommend Sighisoara and Brasov.

As people have said, max 3 countries in this time otherwise you're wasting days with flying.
