In an enthralling sequel to her bestselling The Road to Ruin, Niki Savva reveals the inside story of a bungled coup that overthrew the Liberal prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull, and installed a surprise successor, Scott Morrison, who went on to take the party to a miraculous electoral victory.

On 21 August 2018, 35 Liberal MPs cast their vote against Malcolm Turnbull, effectively signalling the end of his leadership. Three days later, the deed was done, and Scott Morrison was anointed prime minister.

Tony Abbott’s relentless campaign of destabilisation, helped along by his acolytes in the parliament and by his powerful media mates, the betrayals of colleagues, and the rise of the religious right — climaxing in Peter Dutton's challenge — all played a part in Turnbull’s downfall.

But so did Turnbull’s own poor political judgement. He was a good prime minister and a terrible politician. The good bits of Malcolm were not enough to make up for the bad Malcolm.

Nevertheless, the sheer brutality of his removal left many Liberals aghast. MPs were traumatised or humiliated by eight days of madness. Men and women cried from sheer anguish. They went through hell, and feared when it was over that they would not make it back — and nor would the Liberal Party. As it turned out, redemption came with Morrison’s unexpected single-handed 2019 election victory.

Turnbull’s road ended in ruins, as it was always bound to and as he always knew it would, as he predicted to Niki Savva less than three years before it happened.

But when his end was imminent, he could not bear to let go. And when it was over, he was defiant, fragile — and, yes — vengeful.

This is the inside story of what happened — and what happened next.

Expensive dunny paper. I'm inclined to boot the dealer and the dealer in this case.

    • Agreed. The tone of the post says it all.

And really the political journos egg this kind of stuff on because without it they wouldn't have a job

  • +3

    Very expensive door stopper.

    • +1

You would use this as a doorstop for your neighbours to see?

  • Or wait a couple of months and get it on remainder…

  • +4

Cheaper at Target. Who wants to read more lies about liars anyway?

Savva is a high and mighty liberal queen

    • -1

Nothing particularly liberal about her, or most of those associated with that particular side of Australian politics. Conservative is a far better descriptor.

      • +1

The Bittered Sav is not conservative. She definitely thinks the sun shines out of Lord Wentworth’s backside though.

This book was originally entitled “Highway to Hell: The Coup that Destroyed Malcolm Turnbull and left the Liberals in Ruins”
Originally written in the expectation the liberals would lose the May election, it required a name change and a thorough editing before publication.

Perhaps not conservative as in the extreme rwnj's which inhabit our parliaments but she's still far more conservative than liberal. Some people still hold fast to their belief (hope) that Turnbull isn't conservative either, no doubt seduced by his apparent ability to reason and understand basic concepts such as climate change. His actions and politics however suggest that they're grossly mistaken. Off the top of my head I can't think of one but it's possible Australia may have a handful of actual liberals in public life but they won't be found anywhere near the once famous Liberal Party.

Not really - more of a bitter Turmburllite, whose husband used to be a Turnbull staffer. She's had to change the name of the book and the cover when it was all but ready to go to print, when the Coalition won the election, despite Turnbull's best efforts.

Turnbull was "A good Prime Minister"….Bwahaha….
    This is just advertising!

  • This stupid book is $22 at Target

  • +1

    Aren't there cheaper sleeping pills?

  • +6

Cry me a river Turnbull apologists. Forget how he got the job?!

    • +3

This bit always seems to escape peoples memory who are salty about Turnbull getting the boot.

      • Yes, this is particularly a bit rich:

Tony Abbott’s relentless campaign of destabilisation, helped along by his acolytes in the parliament and by his powerful media mates

        • -2

How so? Turnbull did nothing significant to destabilise his leadership, Abbott's own actions and character (hypocrisy writ large) were what led to his demise.

    • A failed Opposition Leader, a failed Prime Minister and a failed plotter against the very party he's still a member of. No idea Why anyone would want to read a book by Niki "Turnbull can do no wrong" Savva?
