Also available at Kobo, ebooks.com and Google Play Books for the same price.

As with most kindle books, you can also add the audiobook for cheap if you own the kindle edition - $5.49 in this case. Useful if you don't have an audible subscription / trial (although the trials / promos are pretty common). I don't think you need to do this at the time of purchase.

Found while browsing the kindle store. I have read the paperback and really enjoyed it.

For those who don't know, this is by the same author as "The Martian". It is science fiction.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it's up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery-and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he's got to do it all alone.

Or does he?

Amazing book, audio book is even better…

    • +1

Yeah I thought it was awesome. Kept me guessing the whole way.

    • +7

Agreed. the way they do the 'voice' (no spoilers) is awesome.
The martian is 10x better than the movie and the movie is good.
His second book was pretty average but Hail mary is back to Martian level.

      • +1

I have the Martian sitting on the bookself. Need to get round to it at some point!

        • I absolutely love it! Read it once a year or so

      • +7

🎵I loved the book. Why no sequel, question? 🎵

      • +1

A funny thing in The Martian audiobook is the narrator saying 'ASC Two', instead of 'ASCII'.

        • Is that the Will Wheaton version or the RC Bray version?

Because the RC Bray version is vastly superior…

      • +1

I found PHM to be very Meh.. i eneded up turning off the audiobook.

however, i love Artemis. i'm actually listening to it again for probably the 5th time.

      • +2

Artemis was is still good. That moon city is awesome.

    • +5

The audiobook was really amazing. I hope the movie does this justice too.

    • It won Audiobook of the Year!

      • +6

The audiobook can be added for extra $5.49 if you buy the kindle book by the looks of things, which is cheaper than buying it outright even with the cost of the ebook included

    • +6

      Fist my bump

    • Agree. Wish they would make it into a movie

    • Came here to say this

  • +4

This is a great story, especially for space and science nerds who will appreciate that the plot is scientifically sound.

  • +4

    One of my favourite books.

  • +9

    A true bargain.

There is a movie coming of this - already filmed starring Ryan Gosling, but not a chance it is going to be as good as the book.

  • +2

My favourite book, I’ve only heard it in audiobook format and can’t imagine how it could be done as well on paper.

  • Best book of the year

    • it came out almost 5 years ago

      • Surely a book is the best at the moment of reading?

  • Very enjoyable audiobook

  • Great book

  • +3

Is it just me or does anyone else find the audiobook slightly cheesy? The whole writing style is a bit cringe at times but I still have enjoyed the book and I enjoy sci-fi. But the audiobook guy doesn’t sound like what I imagine the main characters voice to sound (in my minds voice) and also when he does the high pitch voice to pretend he is a female character sounds a bit comical. Was hoping they would just have different voices for different characters.

Don’t have lots of experience with audiobooks but I listened to Obama read his own book and that was fantastic having the man himself read it (but obviously a different genre).

    • I haven't listed to the audiobook for this but most audiobooks are a single reader. Although there are some which they have a "cast".

    • +2

Nearly all audiobooks are only 1 voice, so if you don't like their tone then it can ruin the whole book. Probably why 5 minute previews are a thing tbh.

    • Listen to Andy Serkis read The Lord of The Rings trilogy and you’ll change your mind. He has an entire repertoire of voices at his command.

  • +6

A fun book, but I feel like the praise it gets is a little overblown

    • I agree. I think at this price though it's a great read.

  • +1

Classic Andy Weir: all the nerdy science, humour, thrills, and twists. Such a great book.

  • +1

Amazing book, also loved the Martian. Any other recommendations?

    • +3

      Other scifi I've enjoyed recently:

      • Rendezvous with Rama - Arthur C Clarke (Classic, still reads well)
      • House of Suns - Alastair Reynolds (Really great. Amazing scope)
      • All Systems Red - Martha Wells (currently $0.99, fun read)

I also read Tau Zero by Poul Anderson which was decent but a bit dated.

      • +1

Murderbot comes out soon on Apple tv so it’s a good time to read all systems red. It’s a quick read too.

    • +1

Letters to Our Robot Son released in print this week - Aussie sci fi, set around the Blue Mountains & Sydney.

    • +1

I loved Andy's other book Artemis more than PHM

  • +2

Book was okay. Plot was interesting, but slow due to all of the verbose explanations.

  • +3

Borrowed the audiobook for free with Borrowbox via my local library, encourage everyone to check out their local to see which app they're aligned with. Popular titles like this are often available, albeit with a bit of a wait sometimes.

    • Any differences in using libby?

      • Different libraries have slightly different catalogues, some authors have more titles on Libby (like Blake Crouch titles), and some on Borrowbox, but I think it's all dependent on the library and not so much the app itself

  • +2

Wasn't as big of a fan of this book as I hoped to be, but it still had loads to offer and is an enjoyable read. I'm very curious to see how the film pans out.

  • Incredible book

  • Great book.. definitely worth a read/listen.

  • Great book. Hopefully the movie isn't terrible.

  • +1

Just read this a couple of months ago. Great book.

  • Thanks for this, have just borrwed it from my local online library

  • -1

I guess I'll play devil's advocate and say that this book is not worth even this low price. Poorly written in my opinion and a good reason to use the library so you don't lose out on any money!

  • A great book. The audiobook is the best

  • One of my favourite books of all time! I also recommend the audio book version!
