In ancient times the Way Between the Worlds was shattered, leaving bands of Aachim, Faellem, and Charon trapped with the old humans of Santhenar. Now Llian, a Chronicler of the Great Tales, uncovers a 3,000-year-old secret too deadly to be revealed-while Karan, a young sensitive, is compelled by honor to undertake a perilous mission. Neither can imagine they will soon meet as hunted fugitives, snared in the machinations of immortals, the vengeance of warlords, and the magics of powerful mancers. For the swelling deluge of a millennial war is rising, terrible as a tsunami, ready to cast torrents of sorcery and devastation across the land…. (less)

    Great series!!!

Personally my favourite book series ever, can't recommend it enough. Especially towards the end of the series (first 4 books), Irvine does something that I haven't seen in fantasy before - there are actually no good guys, no bad guys. As the perspectives change, you begin to realise that all the characters are decent and noble, that they all have their own genuine goals. I couldn't decide who I personally wanted to 'win'.

And just in general, I absolutely love Irvine's writing style, his story building, the characters he creates. You can feel the thought and love he put into the series.

    Do give this a read.

    • To your last point, if you like a bit of moral relativity Joe Abercrombies First Law trilogy is interesting.

    • Just make sure you stop at the end of the first proper series.

      • Yep the second one just pisses you off.

Without giving away too much, it doesn't actually end, it just sets up the next trilogy, and the books are so damn huge that it just overstays its welcome at that point.

Fantastic series, really recommend giving it a chance if you haven't already.

  • The whole series is bundled together for just $9.99 on Amazon US, or you can grab this first book for free and add the Audible audiobook for just $7.49

    • Whats the difference between the audible audiobook and the audible narration? Because it says I can add Audible Narration for this book for $2.99.

  • Great series. So is the next one, but the one after that I wasn't a huge fan of.

  • Oh so cool to see this on ozbargain… This is the first fantasy series I ever read… Ian is also very friendly and interactive with his fans via his fb page :)

    Highly recommended!!

    • Feist was the first for me, but this came a close third.
