the bowl itself is great, but the plastic cover doesn't last very long…
I've only used it for a year, and there is already a crack on the edge of the cover
not unusable, but less easy to open…

Haven’t had that problem myself, but I have had Tupperware lids that have split.

What are the heavy and expensive pyrex bowls good for that other bowls aren't? You can't use them for cooking (They shatter and explode). What is pyrex actually used for? I don't think anyone in their right mind would carry these extra heavy containers from cupboard to the table, let alone to office. Even poor kids to school!

glass is better than plastic for heating meals. Melted cheese burns plastic and plastic is hard to wash.

Also at around $5 its not very expensive compared to the plastic ones which are sold at rrp around $5. Just think which will last longer.

It can be used in a microwave or oven (not the lid)
I use it to store uncooked seafood/meat in the fridge.
        I prefer glass than plastic
The bowl is thick, it does a good job to trap the smell
It's made in USA, I don't trust food containers from China due to health concerns.

      • We used them on dining table all the time, never occurred to us it should be a problem.

I used it for lunch box, it is much easier to clean and doesn't stain the container with spaghetti sauces.

Came here to wish for a 50% off sale on lids alone…

        • unavailable in my local 7 stores :(

        • You have CHANGED my life, available in a nearby store and everything. Thank you!!

        • says temporarily unavailable for me :(

EDIT nvm. found the check stock button

        • Holy crap. Available in the 2nd closest store to me. I've never even thought to look for those. Woolies online says unavailable and doesn't give a price. How much do they cost?

    • Only had 1 lid split from attempted opening right out of freezer.

Can be used as baker, microwave safe, freezer even (although Aldi Tupperware seems a better choice). Does not retain smells and non reactive. Is heavier and bulkier than plastic but that’s the price for safety I guess.

    • Same here. Own both round and rectangle ones. While the glass bowls are great. All the lids are cheap crap and don't last very long. Have spit, broken, become very brittle and basically fall apart when touched.

    • My Pyrex lids crack too due to opening them from the freezer but Pyrex customer service (https://pyrex.com.au/contact/) would be happy to replace them. Great product and customer service.

I have a Tefal multcooker and I needed a bowl that would take 1l of milk to make yoghurt. I found one of the Pyrex bowls just the trick and the lid makes it good for storing it in the fridge.

I have been using Pyrex. The lids are terrible! The bottom is good but the top is hard/expensive to replace. So Beware!

  • +1

Are any of them PYREX or are they all pyrex

    • Neither, these are all Pyrex®

    • what's the difference? capital letters?

      • +1

PYREX is made in France, the glass used is supposed to be better.

        • +2

It's borosilicate glass. The American "pyrex" changed to using soda lime glass many years ago to cut costs.

I have some French "PYREX" containers and they are great. They go on sale at Big W occasionally. I have my own alerts for those on Price Hipster. 😉

          • @jazoom: cool thanks guys - learn something new today lol
So do you mean the BigW ones are made in France?

            • +1

@homersyd: Confusingly, BigW sells the French and American ones side by side. You can tell the French ones by the following:

              1. They say "Made in France"
              2. They have a 10 year warranty on the glass and the lid
              3. The glass has a blue tinge instead of a green tinge
              4. "PYREX" is all caps
              5. They are more expensive
          • @jazoom: What search alert do you use on Price Hipster?

    • The lids don't fit very well, but they do the job.

  • I love the pyrex, with the lids just try not to be too rough with them when they are really cold eg. freezer.
I would love it even more if they were rectangle/square shaped than round! They do sell a medium size rectangle one which I love.

    • +1

They do sell rectangle/square ones …

  • please consider lock n lock, & various other brands that are all available at victoria's basement. the lids are waaaaaaaaaaay better, and theyre mostly air tight that are oven safe too. the blue pyrex lids break all too easily and from memory arent oven safe (red pyrex is oven safe)
