The netbook only has 1 x SO-Dimm socket so it is a swap out manoeuvre. Can't comment on voiding warranty but I doubt it.

  • OW was giving out 50-page booklets - "Taking care of Business" - in which it is claimed, that:

. "switching to a laptop can save up to 99% of energy use every year"

    True or not?

What are they assuming - both about the pre-laptop & the laptop computer, here?

    Anyone?

    • Last year I bought an APC UPS and it came with this handy app. that showed you how much of a load all the electronics I had hooked up to it were using combined and based on that gave me an estimate as to how long the battery could last.

When I had just my notebook hooked up, without my battery in it, it was only using about 14-17W. Comparing that to the average PC, which I'd say would use about 350W, that's 95-96% less.

FYI: With the battery in, it went up to 60W+ !

    Asus' website listing:
    6-cell Li-ion Battery Pack (6cells,63W/h)/13hrs*
    6-cell Li-ion Battery Pack (6cells,56W/h)/11hrs*
    6-cell Li-ion Battery Pack (6cells,48W/h)/10hrs*
    *1 : USB 3.0 x 2 + USB 2.0 x 1 or USB 2.0 x 3

Look at the label on the box,
The product number P/N: 1015PEM-BLK048S could means it comes with 47or 48Wh battery?

The model No. above the specification on the label,
    1015PEM.BLK.U2 means it has the 3 USB2.0 port not 2 USB3.0 and 1 USB2.0?

Anyone has bought one could check the label and the actual specification?

Personally I believe ASUS only ran limited batchs with the high capacity battery and USB 3.0 configuration, just for the beginning media/website reviews and marketing push. Later configurations all of the lower specification.
And you can blame ASUS by advertising
'Super Hybrid Engine technology maximises system performance and extends battery life for up to 13 hours by adjusting the power settings to ensure maximum efficiency, based on the user settings and applications being run.'
but they've only manufactured several hundreds that actually have 63Wh battery.

This is from my box :

      P/N: 1015PEM-BLK048S
      and at end it says:
      EEEPC 1015PEM,BLK,U2
      INTEL ATOM550,250G(D)HDD
      6CELL LI-ION,0.3M CAMERA,1G DDR3,802.11bgn(AS) WW + BT3.0

Have verified through Device Manager that all three are USB 2

Going by the term Super Hybrid blah blah means that there needs to be some system settings done to achieve?

      • +1

Yup, I'd guess that "U2" means you got USB 2.0 ports.

    • +1

ASUS also has qualified their USB 3 with an asterisk and tiny foot note that reads "All specifications are subject to change without notice. Please check with your supplier for exact offers. Products may not be available in all markets"

Means they don't hold themselves accountable

    • How can you say: "You can blame ASUS"?

We're NOT reading ASUS ad's, & we'd NOT be buying from ASUS

      We're reading Harvey-Norman's ad's, and they're responsible for insuring their ad's accurate.

H-N has a label on the ASUS box, and it probably also have to be accurate, if a bit cryptic, about '1015PEM features.

Since there are 3 different 6-cell batteries, since H-N hasn't bothered to clarify the question of which battery is in the box by specifying its wattage rating, their "13 hours" text is all we have.

It'd say: Hold 'em to supplying a battery that meets their "13 hours" ad text, and - from ASUS spec's, we know which battery that is.

The computer industry really needs a going-over by consumer affairs and/or ACCC for ad ambiguity & missing data, which - if presented - would remove much of it.

      • somebody think of the children!

  • Does the 12 hours sale 15% off notebook apply to this model?

  • No usb 3.0
    very dissapointing

  • Beware of them switching to a lesser model without you knowing. How do I change my feedback to a Negative

    • Why NEG?
Its still a good deal. Just a small downer cos of the USB.
Remarked to the sales person @ HN that il finally get use out of my
external 3.0 usb drive with the Asus and he didnt say anything.

      Thanks again OP

      • They gave me a netbook with a slower processor a smaller battery and no bluetooth, you think that is worth a Positive ?

        • The deal is available as advertised. Your issue is between you and the Harvey Norman you purchased it from, not this deal. I'm not saying you weren't tricked, but maybe pay more attention to what you are buying next time as well.

          I witnessed a '1015B being brought out & offerd to a would-be buyer, in the place of a '1015PEM.

The "B" was said to indicate "Black"… in fact,
the label also had "AMD" on it, indicating that
it was NOT an Intel N550.

('dunno if the AMD was faster, of course… as
I didn't check out its details.)

Comparing the two ASUS boxes, & their labels, I noticed that the '1015PEM model number, on its label, was printed in a LARGER font-size than the '1015B model no was on its label.

I suspect that ASUS -aids- vendors to push cheaper boxes out the door, after advertising better spec'd ones with similar prefixes, & maybe makes it easy for staff to leave the more costly boxes on the shelf (ie, when picking ordered computers).

This could possibly go a bit further: Suppose the customer buys a few items together… and doesn't check their total before paying the amount.

One possibility is that a cheaper-to-buy-in '1015B could be pushed out, which it's not on on-sale, ie, so that more '1015PEM's will stay behind to sell (at a higher price), ie, AFTER the $249 sale-price becomes history.

I've read that HN's has had some low sales or other results, in recent past, so it really wouldn't surprise me that it might feel the "need" to do something to boost its revenues.

          my 2.2 cent speculations only…

You could try www.upgradeable.com.au or www.ramcity.com.au; Pls verify what you have said above comes up in their selection ; Check the price with competitors. Is your product from an overseas supplier be careful as ASUS models differ across countries even though appearing to be of same number.

It says max output is 2GB for the netbook. So this won't work?

      • There is only one memory slot so you pick either 1GB or 2GB memory.

  • I checked the one I got today.
It is 1015B with AMD C50, should I be worried? Should I complain? Should I take back to Hardly Normal to swap?

    • I took mine back and it was replaced with the correct one no questions asked. They didn't seem at all surprised, hmmmmm

    • Pls check the post by : IVI on 17/06/2011 - 08:17 in this page on the same issue. I had no problem returning the additional 2 yr warranty ($49) from HN .So if you want exact netbook, you have to make sure of 1015PEM.

    • Just curious, isnt the amd c-50 processor better than the dual core? at least the amd c50 supports hd videos. And the 1015B model has USB 3.0 too.

I guess you should just keep the netbook instead as its a VERY good deal.

      EDIT
I did a google search. The 1015B is the latest model. So if the salesperson happen to give you one 'accidentally', do not return it. You are getting the better deal here.

      • can we verify the USB 3.0 in the box? The website of ASUS may claim this but then they do not supply those models to Australia. (verified this by calling them about the 1015PEM). Other than that the 1015B model reviews have other features that are appealing.

      • I ended up keeping 1015B.

        Reasons:
        1. Blue
1015PEM only comes in black in Hardly Normal stores
        2. Radeon 6250 graphics
nearly 3x performance of video in 1015PEM
        3. HDMI
        1015PEM does not have HDMI
        4. one USB 3.0 port
        no USB 3.0 in 1015PEM???

    • The 1015B with AMD C50 netbook would be the better choice in my opinion.
Its graphically much more powerful and whilst it may only be clocked at 1Ghz versus 1.5 for the Atom, its almost as quick in apps due to the different architecture of the CPU's. As seen in the table.

  • they are sold out at chadstone (VIC) and apparently sold out in most other stores according to a phone conversation i just had with the chadstone store.

  • Is there any store in nsw have stock?

    • I manage to get HN Liverpool to back-order one for me.

      • there were some at campbelltown HVN's store

  • Does 2 GB RAM make a difference?

I find this netbook pretty sluggish. :(

I might go back to WIN XP as I heard that netbooks handle it better.

    • With XP, the multi-touch (touchpad) capability is lost….

  • I went to HN Campbelltown today to get one of these, they're out of stock and say that most of metro NSW is out of stock too. Anyone know if there's any in metro NSW?

Might have to ask HN Liverpool to back order them if possible.

    • I went to get one of these from HN and they are out of stock and said they cannot order more in but they were willing to do the same deal on an HP Mini 110-3744TU for $249. Not sure if it was good deal or not because I can't find any reviews on it anywhere, but it had the basic specs I was looking for. So yeah…

      10.1"
      N570 (1.66GHz)
      250GB HDD
      1024MB DDR3
      Win 7 Starter
      Webcam
      Intel GMA 3150
      Wireless + Bluetooth
      Multi media reader
      6-cell 55WHr battery

Which HN store offered you that? I have tried two stores for the same price on a similar spec model but haven't had any luck.

        • Sorry it was in Bunbury WA. I had the same problem with office works not wanting to do a price match on the Acer deal. Some stores are good about it and others simply won't do it.
