  • Make sure it isn't a fungal nappy rash cos this ain't going to do the trick…! Would 100% recommend speaking to your pharmacist before making the purchase if unsure.

    • I'm genuinely curious. Do pharmacists actually look at the rash? I can't really imagine that happening in the middle of a pharmacy.

As a doctor there's no way I'd diagnose a rash without first looking at it. The subtleties in appearance, distribution and features are important.

I'm also curious if a pharmacist would be able to tell the difference between an irritant contact dermatitis and a Candida nappy rash. I suppose they could be if they looked at all the baby bums in the pharmacy.

It was a pharmacist who 'diagnosed' my perioral dermatitis, the GP just wrote it off as garden variety eczema and prescribed a topical steroid and when I went to get the script refilled the pharmacist took one look at me and said 'you've been using this on your face haven't you'. He was horrified and said, quite correctly I later learned, that topical steroids are actually often the cause of PO dermatitis. Refused to dispense it until I got a 2nd opinion who confirmed what the pharmacist suspected.

So yeah, in my experience they are very good with this kind of thing.

          I think you're just generalising here…
Doctors are much better trained at identifying these compared to pharmacists…

This is a straw man argument. The whole point of what I was asking was whether the pharmacist will look at a nappy rash. Of course they're going to see the rash on your face.

And in medicine, we call this an anecdote. It's not really evidence of much. This is evidence that your pharmacist is good and deserves your business. It's not evidence of "they" anything.

I frequently talk to pharmacists about medications, since that's their area of expertise. I learn a lot from them. My area of expertise is diagnosis. I can't think of any occasion where I've learnt something about that from a pharmacist. I think it's great your pharmacist has gone the extra mile.

Keep in mind you've also touched on an important part of the diagnostic process in dermatology. Try a cream and see what the effect is. Your pharmacist saw you after the fact. Your doctor saw you before. It's always a lot easier to diagnose something after another doctor has had a crack and ruled something out. Patients don't understand this and think the second doctor is a genius and the first didn't know what they were doing.

@jazoom: From what I've seen, most pharmacies/chemists will have some kind of privacy room available for queries like a nappy rash.

  • Most nappy rash is caused by wee on the skin for long periods.

Sorborlene on the rash, petroleum jelly over the top to waterproof the skin. Cheap magic.

Are you taking the piss ?

Possibly a stupid question, but how do you click and collect from Chemist Warehouse?

This stuff is thick and luxurious. You only need the smallest amount to cover a fairly large area. It will last you YEARS.

  • Is it prevention or cure?

As have the regular stuff for prevention but use a different brand which is $20 a tube for curing the nappy rash, which took over a week to heal when I hadn't found out about the cream.(sorry can't recall the name exactly)

    • It prevents further damage which allows the body to heal more effectively.

  • japanese nappies is what we used for both kids. haven't seen any nappy rash. when occasional redness appears (doesn't look like rash to me) sudocrem works wonders.

  • I use this cream occasionally as an adult on any strange skin conditions. It is very good and yes you only need a tiny amount and this is about half price.
