some FYI from someone who purchased the game prelaunch and has pretty much all classes (pre Lahn) awakened

just to play for free during this period is fine, don't go down of paying like i did for eye candies.

    1. the pearl store is expensive, you are looking at $25 per costume, which is character locked, no sharing; you can try to get it without paying via the auction house, but good luck with that because it's completely RNG who wins the bidding war.

    2. gear upgrade is completely RNG, weapons and armors are downgraded, whereas accessories are destroyed, there are some people who spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars buying the tears to speed up repair (to build fail stacks), only to have everything down the drain

    3. L50 is the cap before PvP mode is switched on, there is no way to turn it off (awakening is L56), and this is where the bad experiences a lot of players starts

    4. others can basically 1 shot you, even worse are the trolls hanging out at leveling areas taking you down to almost death and let the mobs finish you off; you lose exp from death penalty, each death is pretty much around 2 hours of level grind

    5. there is basically no way to catch up, unless you whale super hard, and that's if people actually put those gears on the auction house, basically never

If you want to play MMO for free, might well try out Guild Wars 2, the entire core game is free with few limitations
The game is horizontal progression, so meaning there is a fixed gear cap, once you hit the ceiling is all about your skills; if you decide to take a 2 year break as I did, your gears are still relevant

    • SO what happens to the trolls who attack you, is there no penalty ? Also if u die from a player do u also lose the 2h of exp? I want to play this game with a friend as was thinking of buying the 6.49 game alone or the 32 pack and that would be all i spend. Just looking to play a game with a friend and enjoy it slowly. I have Guild Wars 2 but i dont really like it. Also Any quests for exp?

      • No penalty unless they actually kill you, and if they kill you they just have their Karma reduced

when Karma goes into negative, town NPCs will attack them

but it is extremely easy to restore karma back to positive by killing mobs, plus the town guards basically hit them next to nothing because of their high gear or they can easily evade the town guards because it's so slow; there also a bandit town in the middle of the desert where you can only talk to NPCs if your karma is negative

the questing is very much like traditional MMO, go to a place, if your level and done the pre-requisites, the quest marker will show up on mini map

One thing I missed out on my previous comment, be prepared to fork out $100+ per toon on bags and weights capacities, the inventory system is not just base on space, but weights also, even the money you carry with you counts towards weight

without space and weight upgrade, you are looking at 30min grind sessions with very average joe ap before spending 15-20min running back to town, and that's assuming that no other grinding groups around you, because they would kill you if you interrupt their grinding route, and they are usually the well-geared guys there just purely to make money

and also 3 pets from pearl store, upraded, for auto looting, you dont want to spend 20sec on looting dead bodies

        • Damn seems like alot of work and seems unbalanced. Defintly not spending that much, just going to have fun until level 50 and see how it goes after i guess. ANy other mmo out there that are good?

This is a good assessment of the game. However, it is also a tonne of fun to play in its own way. Horizontal progression is superior in many ways, though having the excitement of gear upgrades can be compelling.

The new Shai class is also cute and fun to play.

I'd say it's worth giving the game a go, but certainly be critical and decide during the two weeks if it's for you.

sorta… it's kinda a diagonal progression, because the amount of time you need to pour into level grind after L60 is a bit ridiculous… you are basically spending months on a single level.

yeah, BDO being a sandbox gives you plenty of opportunities to discover what you find fun.

I spent the final few months pretty much just cooking beers all day long, because farming spots are always taken by higher geared people, and being in backwater country like us we have 10x latency compare to the NA people; ended up being one of the top 10 cooks

if the OP is looking for something more traditional similar to WoW, BDO probably isn't the one…

the in-game economy isn't so straight forward, took me a while to work out how to best invest in the nodes to generate most incomes
