"Not available for existing Members who are in renewal or have renewed or have an active Membership." - Sounds to me like i'm not renewing and creating a new account :)

  • Wonder if Musk's Robo Taxis will make this service obsolete, like Uber. 2020 will be interesting.

Depends, if they're clever then they'll just sign up to be the official provider of roadside assistance for those companies.

Autonomous vehicles are damn difficult to get right. Entrepreneurs are busy saying they’ll be available to the public within a few years (or “next year” for entrepreneurs who really need to raise cash), but the same types were raising money a decade ago on the same promises.

I’ve worked in the field, and it’s basically now full of jaded engineers. Getting 99% of the way there is easy. It’s the edge cases that matter. But it turns out that real-world driving is all edge cases.

Plus, the handover problems actually get worse the closer you get to full autonomy due to driver inattention leading to degraded situational awareness.

Outside of geofenced areas in major population centres, where high-precision maps have been created and are aggressively updated, autonomy is a decade or two away from being ready for prime time.

The best we can hope for in the near-term is robotaxis in the CBD (but not from Tesla - it is years behind its competitors), with pseudo-autonomy (lane-keeping, lane change assistance, autonomous driving in low-speed traffic, etc) for our daily drivers.

So services like the NRMA aren’t going anywhere.

      NRMA not NVM ;P

I don't ever buy membership. RACQ has a 'pay double on the day' if you sign up and need assistance in the first 24hrs. So, thats what I do. I go most years without needing help. Also, the main reason I do this is, I live rural, and if you don't get the right cover (read: towing distance) you have to pay a shit tonne extra. It's cheaper to sign up on the day after calculating (google maps from current location to destianation) km's to see what cover you need. Atleast, again, rural. As if I brake down, I might need a couple hundred k's towed.

      • There are some benefits which have saved me money - e.g. aquarium, lego land and zoo costs for our visit to Melbourne. The perks are useful sometimes. Also, for the peace of mind just in case you do require roadside assistance.

Update: Its an extra $98, not double the fee. Even better. Must have been ~$100 annual fee last time I did this.

        • Good idea. I'll keep that in mind!

        • Also, if you want the benefits of the "RACQ Rewards" program, you can get that by opening a bank account with them (free). I deposited $10 in the account, and have got more than that back in discounts, and the $10 is still there. I didn't have to set foot in a branch to open the account, all done by internet and Australia Post. Took about 6 weeks until I received the RACQ membership card. But you'll need a QLD street address to sign up, and they do mail you bank statements.

@Russ: I… didn't know they were a bank. Cheers. Whats with QLD opening all this banks with Q in the name. None are doing great :S

      • I never use road side, but for $8/month I think I will. I purchased the extra $1/month windscreen chip replacement (1 free per year). So that's basically paid for my membership, as I have an existing window chip.

  • Are we able to cancel after 3 months making it a free 3 month membership?

Is this deal valid for VIC residents?

  • Where were you last week, hah?

This is a great deal for those that need a tow but can wait 48 hours.

  • Valid till 30 June 2019?

Maybe this deal is only eligible for owners of DeLorean cars.

  • I'm getting "Deal Expired" when I click the deal

  • looks like its been removed:(

Just ask before you sign up on the vehicle you are enquiring.
I had two cars to renew and as I had overlooked the renewal date the guy from NRMA rang me and said that my Ford Focus was good for towing on the “classic care” but the XR6 was too heavy for the classic care and I would have to choose the “Premium Care” for if I ever needed towing!
I asked about 3 times to make sure I understand him properly as I had this car for around 9-10 years on the classic care.
I can’t remember the weight that it had to be below and when they changed the conditions of the weight now, but I decided not to renew with them again.

    • If a company is willing to screw you with polite indifference and legally binding reinforcement, please, PLEASE follow the OzBargain motto 'yes, but what have you done for me lately?'

F$@k companies cause there sole (atleast primary) purpose is to do you first :( :)
