[AMA] I Used to Work at MSY, Ask Me Anything

quit a while back, each store is different so unless its a general question, i can really only answer for how things are done in NSW. I was involved in the retail side of things so know nothing of what happens @ HQ.

Disclaimer: all replies are my own opinion, nothing i say represents MSY.

If it ain't broke. Don't fix it.

      • … and when it IS 'broke'?

        • Don't pay enough to get it fixed, so it remains 'broke'.

  • When is the good time to visit MSY?

You know, when visitors are sparse and lots of clearance on desks and perhaps some managers special?

    Thanks in advance

    Zz

    • +2

specials are decided whenever hq throws them out, good times to visit are 10-11 and 3-5 ish. opening, 12-1 and closing are the busiest

      • Any particular day of a week or any day is like this?

        • i would say mon-fri, although there will be an occasional day where its busy the whole day for some reason

          • @Kowaishi: The reason is someone posted something on ozbargain and it got 100 votes lol

        • +1

Don't go during school holidays, I've made that mistake before there was a line out the door and around the block.

      • +1

why do they open so late unlike other retail stores? In Melb it's 10:30.

        • ** deleted ** inappropriate comment

          • +2

@resisting the urge: i'm curious what kind of comment that could have been.

            • @lostn: it was, as a pompous ambassador once put the state of the current state, totally inept.

You see, I remember being there late one night, many many years ago, so I thought you were commenting why they were open at 10:30pm. Now of course any PC shop open late at night rocks, and rocks hard. And is naturally better than all the competition. So I commented along these lines, but alas, didn't think to check…

A quick search tells me however they close in utter misery at 6pm, or earlier, which only serves to underscore your comment really

What a loss. Wo is me, I remember the days of visiting HT late in the evening.

If you ask me, what we need is a shop that never closes, a little cheap and cheerful like MSY, beside a Krispy Kreme's, around the corner from a McDs and HungriJax, which serves awesome coffee, has a gaming lounge, meeting and business lounge, velcro wall, and basically gives you no reason to go home…

  • were u around during the controversy with the warranty issues with a lot of the MSY franchises? was ur store affected, what actually happened and did u think MSY was in the wrong?

  • what are the cpu/mobo/ram/psu/gpu failure rates from your perspective seeing returns? is it often in the early months or years down the track normally?

    • the most common time components fail in my experience is out of the box, otherwise theyre pretty good to last past at least their warranty

      • which component fails more often from your X years experience?

        • motherboards and gpu

  • Did you work with non-Asian looking peeps?

What's the worse thing you heard your colleagues remark about customers?

    • +4

nsw is all asians im pretty sure and the employees dont care enough to bother making remarks

      • Haha that's very diplomatic answer!

  • Is the PC sales slump because of iPad or not affected at all?

    • +6

Don't know its HQ issue :)

    • +1

      of course not

  • How many hours a week are you expected to work there? Do you get paid wage based or salaried?

    • there's no real expected hours just rostered depending on availability, wage based its retail

      • Years ago I heard people were expected to work 6 days a week.

  • Ever dreamed of robbing it for computer parts

    • it would be so easy :(

    What does Msy stand for

  • +16

Either you don’t know much about your work or aren’t putting effort into the AMA, because the responses are very dull.

    • Q: “Which components failed the most?”
A: Give the brands you saw the most returns, the most angry customers, not just “gpu’s and motherboards”

    • Q: “What’s the worst thing you heard your colleagues remark about customers”
A: “Employees didn’t care to make remarks about customers”. Really? You worked in retail, not to mention a store that many can personally recount getting pissy at, and you can’t recount a single instance anybody made a comment? I don’t buy it at all.

What’s the point of an AMA if you are just going to reply “dunno it was HQ”, simply poor effort.

    • A: “Employees didn’t care to make remarks about customers”.

I find that believeable, they all seem to have a nonchalant no smiling attitude, Robots working at 50%…

Also m experience working with Asians not born in Australia is a hardier work ethic… the ones born here like to goof off like the rest of us

    • +3

I didn't specify a brand as it applies to all of them, the most often component I see fail are motherboards and gpus regardless of brand.the question literally asked components so I answered.

yes we are retail but that doesn't mean there's always drama, there's literally 1-3 employees per store.

I do recall angry customers but again, no especially rude comments were made. maybe you like making rude remarks at people behind their backs but what does that achieve? nothing.

      • +6

Making rude remarks =/= making remarks about angry customers.. There is absolutely nothing wrong with making a remark like "gee, how bad was that customer who threw a fit over x?!", you are saying it never happened, which everybody finds hard to believe, it's retail dude, everybody has those stories of horror customers/encounters. Apparently not you though.

yes we are retail but that doesn't mean there's always drama, there's literally 1-3 employees per store.

He didn't ask you "what was the worst thing you heard yesterday", nowhere does anybody imply that there must always be drama, he asked you in general, and you said nobody ever cared to make any remarks i.e either you are saying nothing ever happened, OR, you are providing very dull answers hence all the comments that your AMA is crap.

The irony is that you are literally putting more effort into arguing with me than into your answers.

        Why. Bother.

    • +4

But you can't say it isn't authentic MSY experience!

  • +22

    This is a crap AMA.

    • Nothing new more on…

Sound to me just like ordinary retail information, nothing like msy been take over by mafias :)

    • Read it out in this guy's voice:

      / Worst. AMA. Ever. /

    • Agreed. The egg price discussion was more exciting.

      • +1

        *Eggciting.

  • One of the accepted-as-truth things around is that computer stores particularly MSY are high-volume-low-profit type of shops. Did you ever see the wholesale cost of the items to know if this is true or not?

    • yes the purchase price is definetly lower than our sales price, however the mark up isn't very high.

  • +10

Would you rather fight one horse sized duck or ten duck sized horses?

  • What does MSY stand for?

  • +10

We've had MSY AMAs before but this one was the worst. The OP's responses are so generic they could literally apply to any retail store.

    • +7

No, other retail store AMA's would be more interesting.

    • +1

There is lots of room to expand on answers with interesting stories about situations and scenarios but the answers do seem a little generic. I guess it's just like an episode of a TV series, but this one may not have hit the mark for everyone but thanks still to the OP.

    • +9

Well it is pretty reflective of interactions with MSY employees

      • +4

        no stock

  • +1

Why is their Cannington store now closed on Saturdays? Their Balcatta store still opens on Saturday but that's a pain for me to get to.

  • +3

Did your staff ever brush their teeth?

    • Why is that an issue unless you're planning on french kissing them?

      • Come on, it's the most simple question to answer….

  • How much were you paid?

  • +8

This is about as dull as… shopping at MSY.

  • +8

    Worst AMA.. sorry OP

  • +1

Why aren't you still working there now?

  • +1

Did you even work there. Seems like you know jack all about the place and answering with vague replies

  • +1

How much discount did you get from being an employee?

    • unfortunately one of the employees abused the discount system some years back so employees now receive 0 discounts

      • +4

How'd they abuse the system? Buy all at cost and put on gumtree / eBay?

        Know what they were getting?

  • worst customer story?

    • +8

      Only HQ have the stories

  • OP,
did you ever hear of "Fast Eddie" or "Dodgy Eddie" ?
do your MSY colleagues know of him?

    • personally I'm not familiar with anyone names Eddie, none of my colleagues ever mentioned him either

      • i guess you're showing your age, if you hadn't heard of "fast Eddie" and buying PC hardware :-)

  • OP, another question(s):
how do you or MSY staff view, your competitors, e.g. MWave, Umart, etc… ??

do you ever visit their stores or do you get staff discount at MSY ?

what is the staff discount at MSY ?
what's the job interview or recruitment process for MSY ?

    • Be Asian or look extremely geeky.

      • mutually exclusive ?

    • +2

as retail staff, competitors don't really matter. I've shopped at either one if their prices are good or if they carry something we don't. the staff do not get discounts, this was ruined by a guy abusing the system some years ago. recruitment is, submit resume online and if chosen you are invited to an interview.

if your thinking about working for msy, it is 99% retail. not pc building everyday

  • +1

    Do you know computers?

    • +4

Maybe OP should just tell us what they know rather than us asking the questions…

  • +1

    Seagate or Western Digital?

    • +1

personally I've used both and never had issues. they tend to sell pretty equally except the nas drives, customers seem to prefer wd for nas. warranty claims are pretty equal between the both brands as well

    • WD

  • When are the busiest hours/days?

    • days are pretty similar but hours would be opening, lunch and closing

  • How much is your daily rate? Do you think it's enough? Why do you quit?

    • +1

imo daily rate isnt enough, there are good days but rare now. i quit because minimum wage with no chance of increase and no employee benefits

      • +1

I thought so, the staff never look happy.

  • Do you get old people who in stroll in who expect it to be like Harvey Norman in that they go in and have no idea what they want to buy but they want the guy at the cash register to spend all their time helping them choose a pc while customers are waiting.

Are seagate or western digital more reliable.

Do people still get computers these days, in my experience a lot less people have pc's than 5 years ago.

Its a good store and I was impressed last time I went that the staff were able to know stuff off the top of their heads.

    • not just old people, literally anyone could stroll in with no idea, you would be surprised with the amount of people that know nothing. theres also others that want to get into pc's and just want to learn. its not all bad

      ive answered the seagate/wd above

yes plenty of people get pc's a big majority of users where poeple buying their first pc. i dont think theres a decline at all.

glad you had a pleasant experience

  • Anyone watch porn at work?

    • +1

      haha no

  • +1

This is a crap AMA. I feel catfished

  • Gotta say many years ago msy auburn. The staff were very helpful to Asians but they wouldn’t even open up a brown tower box to see it before buying. Then their dodgey methods claiming your cash back as theirs.

    • +3

no boxes are open unless theyre sold. if we have open boxes lying around they're hard to sell and if we cant sell them theyre useless to us. you may be fine with an open box but there are alot of people including myself that wouldn't purchase an open box product or one that looks resealed from a store.

  • How did msy make their money at the start?
Selling at cost and claiming cash back doesn’t seem that profitable.

    • +1

msy started over 20 years ago so im not sure how things were done, i imagine one location and online and built up over the years.

msy definitely doesn't sell at cost, every item has a profit markup. depending on the product it could be a small or big markup. there are times where items are sold at or below cost due to quantity or end of life but these loses are made up in other items.
