[AMA] I Used to Work at MSY, Ask Me Anything

quit a while back, each store is different so unless its a general question, i can really only answer for how things are done in NSW. I was involved in the retail side of things so know nothing of what happens @ HQ.

Disclaimer: all replies are my own opinion, nothing i say represents MSY.

@kolorijo: No smiles, same as any workplace…

            • +4

@kolorijo: I assumed that was company policy.

Don't smile, you will give customers high expectations

  • +31

Why no one smiles at Msy?

    • +42

      :(

    • I just had to log on and give you an up-vote

    • +4

company policy, smiling gives customers higher expectations

    • +3

      Discourage returns and after-sales service.

  • +5

is MSY a company who help people to get residency? I heard that people pretend to be getting paid to work there but instead all the money + extra money has to be paid to MSY in order to get PR.

    Is this true?

    • +1

      from what i know, no.

    • I have also heard this from someone who previously managed an IT company.

      • Being told that it is their main business

  • +1

Have you guys ever built a completely over-the-top system for yourselves/client that absolutely kills everything else… A 'money-is-no-object' system?

    • +8

yea a few time times over a couple of years, happens rarely. but plenty of expensive systems.

    • +12

      Apple Cheese-grater!

  • +6

Can I get a refund for this?

    • +18

      sorry no (:

seriously tho if its unopened and within 2 weeks yea

      • But the restocking fee. You can usually resell it on gumtree and make a profit.

      • +3

If its faulty or doesn't work as described you can. Even without packaging.

        • +1

If it's faulty you probably have at least six months no matter what msy try to say.

We just need an AMA from a MSY customer now!

OP, you can learn a bit about HQ from here

  • Favourite part of working with MSY?

    • +37

      parts.pdf

      • -5

OP is AMA MSY NSW Retail.

parts.pdf is AMA MSY HQ thread.

        • +4

          It's a joke Sheldon… favourite "part"… get it?

    • +3

the occasional system build, i like building systems.

      • is it only occasional? Do most customers just buy parts?

        • our systems are built in the warehouse not instore, in store builds are mostly if customers bring their own parts or we rebuilding their current pc

  • Why you can sell so cheap, was the volume really large so you can have that much bargaining power with suppliers?

    • no idea but the more you buy the better the bulk buy price i assume

      • +1

It's because you sell at cost and get money through cashback via the vendors. E.g, sell 5 laptops get $200 back and so on.

        • +2

That’s one of many methods as part of negotiations with the vendors, it can be throwing in a dock/bag/mouse for every unit purchased to get the deal across the line, essentially getting units that are sold for close to 100% G.P, supplier bonuses and incentives as you brought up, bulk purchasing definitely remains a factor.

From personal experience, it differs from vendor to vendor, and sales rep to product manager (your personal connections with Dicker Data, Synnex, Ingram Micro etc)

        • +1

          How do you know this.
          Doesn’t seem very profitable

          • +3

            @Hirolol: 'Doesn’t seem very profitable'

Judging by the number of Black S Class Mercs at the Clayton store car park, I say the owners are doing ok.

            • +4

@JimB: it's all the international students from halls at monash building $4000 LoL machines

            • @JimB: I’m saying that I think that’s not how they make most of their money.

  • Tell me about this stock listing/backdoor to the ASX. This was announced (apparently) in March, was brought to our attention this week, and the holding company (LGR) is suspended. Smells a little fishy?

    • +1

no idea anything about this, would be a hq thing

      • +1

Ok, so can you tell me who owns MSY?

        • +4

          Church of Scientology.

          • +4

            @xuqi: Good one bro

          • +7

            @xuqi: Church of MScientologY.

            FTFY.

    • +2

It's not fishy, it's just a reverse takeover. MSY wants to list on the stock exchange, but IPO's are expensive and time consuming. Instead, they loaned money to a penny stock company to 'buy' them - so they now have a worthless company [who are listed on the ASX] who owns a profitable company [MSY]. The worthless company will soon be renamed to MSY (or something related) and voila - MSY is ASX listed without having to go through an IPO.

      • LGR stock is still suspended

        • +1

Yeah that's standard practice. Trading will be suspended until the deal is complete and the new shares are issued.

Once the RTO is done the ASX needs to ensure the company is compliant with listing rules.

          • @happydude: Seeing as this deal started in March (apparently, according to the documentation on the ASX site), I assumed this latest announcement was the finalisation of the deal.

          • +3

@happydude: MSY and compliance…. like tuna and chocolate

Why is there always a queue and why is the guy at the front of the queue always casually chatting about PC upgrades with the sales staff for about 30-45 minutes, despite the fact he probably won't buy any PC components and just came in for a keyboard or something?

    • +2

Well for your first question, that guy is the reason there's a queue.

      • No he's not. The reason there is a queue is that only one staff member is serving customers.

If you have bunches of customers and only one person serving you are businessing wrong. Hire extra sales staff or tell other staff to stop assembling PCs and jump onto sales when there's more than one customer, and to politely say "let me just serve this customer and then I'll go check if the GX 4465 has 3 fans or not for you" when needed.

    • youve pretty much answered your own question. its either that or theyre getting a system quote made or theyve walked in with a list of components for a whole system that we have to pick/scan.

    • +5

And this is why I go to Umart. You might have to wait for someone to pick your parts, but you don't have to stand in a queue.

  • +2

    OP, were you in Auburn?

    • +1

      never been to auburn

      • +10

        haven't misse much

      • +1

        God bless you.

        • +4

The guy at Mt Pritchard had a sign on the counter that said 'Im not interested that you used to go to MSY Auburn I didn't work there' or something similar it was a bit odd

  • +1

What is your favourite pizza topping?

    • any meat tbh

  • +1

How much did the guys at MSY get paid?

    • +2

      retail wages

  • +1

Can MSY build me a hackingtosh?

    • +1

hardware yes, software you'll have to figure out

  • OP, any tip on how to get unban from MSY online ordering? I told em to eff off on email coz they (Auburn) stuff up my order few years back. They sent me a nice warm banhammer email reply.

    • i actually didnt even know banning was a thing

      • +1

Dont worry, I blacklisted em too. Only visit em Auburn once in blue moon when they got silly cheap prices.

        • +2

Is Auburn MSY the one in the complex full of cheap overpriced furniture shops?

          • +3

@DemocracyManifest: Yes, and the strong smell of formaldehyde from imported furniture.

            • +6

@UncleMurphy: That is how Auburn MSY employees get their free daily highs. Meth no longer required.

  • +22

Kowaishi, i would have thought you'd make things interesting with some hidden insight into MSY, this is as interesting as a chinese burn.

    • +7

that's cause y'all ain't asking the right questions

      • +1

        OK I'll bite:

What's the most interesting questions we could be asking but aren't?

  • +9

Why doesnt anyone answer a phone?

    • +2

there are some lazy stores, however some stores are probs just serving customers, try spacing ur calls instead of calling 3 times in a row cause chances are they're still serving customers

      • +8

Calling Auburn was terrible, so I called the store number one day whilst standing in line at the Auburn store.
I didn't hear it ring at all, the phone was possibly hidden out the back?

        • …nice…I guess the line must have been pretty long to have bothered to call thinking that would give you a quicker response.

        • +7

Hilarious - I went in to Auburn and was pissed off they ran out of stock of something. They said I should have called earlier and I told them I tried to call 10 times throughout the day and no-one answers the phone.

He says “We have been here all day and we had no calls”. I then ring the store in front of him and lo and behold no rings anywhere.

The phone was non-existent. The guy gave a sheepish smile and I walked out even more pissed off

          • @[Deactivated]: you can check stock level online now

isnt that ironic your website is from 1999 even though you are a technology retailer?
