Hey there aspiring artists.

If you can wait til August to receive it - Amazon are offering a Renoir Large Lyre Craft Easel (152 x 60 x 70 cm )for $17.73 with free delivery for prime members.

Thought there may be at least one or two people around interested in channeling their inner Bob Ross. Probably make a decent gift for a few others.

The same model can be found currently at Bunnings $61.47 - my google skills may be weak with this sort of thing but couldn't find any other cheaper prices. Happy to be corrected though

  • Thanks OP, got one.

  • Anyone know if it'll be good without the locking mechanism? Don't know much about this stuff but want to get into it.

What kind of art are you interested in making and in what size? Lyre easels are not necessarily the greatest for brush painting depending on the circumstances - they are definitely usable but not hugely adjustable, especially without a top, so you might be craning and uncomfortable on large pieces or without an adjustable chair. On the other hand if you're going to be standing or working on small things it might be just right.

      • Thanks for the reply! The sale ended so won't be getting the easel but I want to get into oil painting with large pieces. What would you recommend instead of a lyre easel?

if you're doing small pieces or don't want to invest a lot right away, test the waters etc - I'd suggest a table easel. maybe a box table easel so you have some storage - a side drawer is maybe the best configuration, but also available are front drawers, and back drawers.

if you're going bigger or definitely keen i'd recommend a floor easel usually just called a studio easel. look for one with 4 feet, adjustable and lockable at the top and bottom, that can tilt 90 degrees upright and 180 degrees flat.

or if you're wanting to paint outside, you'll want a french easel, or box field easel, aka sketch box easel, or a pochade box. a separate or removable tripod is harder to find but makes it also usable as a table easel. it's also possible (carefully the wood is thin) to add a T nut to a box table easel as a tripod thread to use it as a field easel.

check gumtree for any bargains - a lot of hobby stuff is barely used when it gets on there. they're also not difficult to rehabilitate if it's grotty and you don't like that - a rub and a sand and an oil - just ask what kind of paint has been used on it.

if buying new, mont marte brand is retail-economical and a lot of their products are actually quite good quality.
also don't be afraid of getting something unbranded.
art stores frequently have pretty big to enormous markups, but they do have floor models you can check out and advice you can ask for and then use where ever you like.

  • "Usually dispatched within 1 to 3 months."

  • Thanks op, bought one for my wedding
