[Pre-Order] Nintendo Switch Lite (All Colours) $298 @ Harvey Norman

750

A decent discount for pre-order of the Nintendo Switch Lite, if you were interested in getting one on release day. $329 everywhere else I looked (RRP).

Personally think that better value is to be had from the original console but can see how this would appeal as a gift, for kids etc.

Happy bargain hunting

But $80 difference to current switch, with ability to hook up to big tv and removable joy-cons, I rather pass this…

    • +15

Considering the original Switch has been on sale for $379 very regularly and even cheaper ($339 eBay Plus sale recently, $329 Amazon in the past) I agree.

But if you really wanted this one, or want it for the kids (no removable joy cons, I can see how that's a benefit!) maybe this is a good deal for someone :)

    • +6

Even if you only play in handheld, it’s still better value to buy the original. Not only does it have more features, you can subsidize the cost by selling the dock for about $80 - $90.

      • +17

As a Switch owner, the thumbsticks wear quite easily and eventually have "drift". Obviously you can just get new joycons with the original Switch and replace them fixing the problem. This new one, good luck because they are part of the device.

        • I thought the exact same thing as I’ve had to replace two joycons and my Switch is now 1.5 years old.

          • -1

@Saver Scott: What are you doing with your joycons? Mine are 2 years old and never had an issue.

        • I had this same issue with drift, but it was easily fixed after I got rid of a bit of dust that got into the thumbstick, did you try that when you had the issue?

          • @buckster: I did, thanks. I checked the web for all trouble shooting tips but as it was still under warranty, EB Games replaced it. Not the second one tho as that’s only just happened.

        • Agree, dont even use mine that much and have replaced one joycon thumbstick.

      • +1

You can't sell the dock for $80-$90 because you still need to keep the charger. No one's going to buy just the dock for the same price they could get the dock+charger for.

        • +6

It only needs a USB C cable to charge. It doesn’t really need the dock. Buying a dock new is around $150 so maybe $80 is possible.

      • +2

Have you sold a dock for $80-90?

        • No, but that’s how much people are paying for them on eBay (see sold listings).
I was interested in acquiring a second one for my gaming room, but not for that price.

      • Why would I pay more for a heavier, bulkier, handheld game console that has less battery life than the new one?

Because it has "more features" that I'm not going to use? Such value.

    • +6

Agree should be 180 difference not just $80 with original

      • -7

Well the American price is 200, the RRP of the OG is 300 there, so a third off. Our OG's RRP is 470, even though it's always on sale for less, always. One third of 470 is 156. 470 minus 156 is 314, so even just doing a straight take of a third, we're still paying 16 more than we should at full RRP.

        • +12

Why do people always post these false comparisons.

          Three letters. T A X.

        • -6

that what i meant. the rrp is bad, should be at least 40-45% from original

    • +1

The price drop will happen, just give it time. The current Switch is $469 RRP, but you can easily get it for $340-400 most of the time. This Lite will drop easy, to around $220-250, likely jsut in time for christmas. or they will do a $300 deal with a game/ accessories.

    • I can see why they wanted to disable the switch TV-output docking function… Considering they sell that dock for $80 separately!

    • As a second Switch, this deal is not bad for an ultraportable. Has more battery life run time. Apparently, Nintendo is working hard with this solution where you can pick and go with the Switch at home and the Switch lite when you go out.

    • So many negatives and only gain a d-pad plus 30 minutes average battery life, really disappointing.

  • +5

I Think this will be a big seller

  • +17

I've always been a portable lover, countless Game Boys and PSPs and even 5 or so Vitas for various reasons, this would have appealed greatly to me… as a second option Two and a half years ago when I picked up a Switch at midnight.

I'm fine with a smaller screen honestly. I'm definitely fine with built in Joy-Cons (and a d-pad). I'm fine with the slightly bigger battery life and I'm fine with not being able to use the VR thing even though I enjoyed it a bunch. Fine with no "HD rumble" either since I usually turn that off in the OS settings anyway. But I'm not fine with paying more proportionately (based on taking a third of the RRP price off) than we should for what amounts to a shittier version without the ability to play on the tele, a good two years too late.

If this was 250. I'd probably make the switch if/when my OG dies. But at this price, I'd rather pay that bit more and buy a new OG model if mine should fail me (or just get it repaired, I never think of that). Will be very interested to see if TV out can be achieved either through the official dock and some cutting of the case, or via third party docks/accessories. If this guy could one day be plugged into the tele, I'd pick one up down the road at 250 or less. 330 is too much for less features.

That being said, if my kiddo was like 7 or 8 and not 3, I'd use buying it as a present for them as an excuse to have a look at it, because it does look very spiffy and I love the blue one.

Anyway, on topic, decent pre order deal OP.

    • +1

I like the idea of a single solid thing. Since I use mine in handheld most of the time. 🤔

  • is CPU the same?

    • Performance is the same as the old Switch, but it uses less energy due to working at a lower voltage. Not a big difference, but this new Switch lasts 30 minutes to an hour of gameplay time longer according to Nintendo.

Edit: Here's the Nintendo site comparison, scroll down and check the battery difference - https://www.nintendo.com.au/nintendo-switch-systems/compare/

    • +1

The "old" Switch non-lite is getting a new CPU too: https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2019/7/10/20689379/n…

      • I really hope they don't increase the price for that.

        • The revised CPU will make it cheaper for them to produce, not more expensive. It's essentially like a PS4 Slim vs the OG model.

          • +1

@baratta: Not the same equivalency. It's more akin to the subtle revisions of the PS4 Pro that changed small aspects without drastically changing hardware aesthetics which a slim model does. e.g. recent PSU changes resulting in it being quieter at higher load, or the multiple motherboard revisions of the PS2 prior to the slim model coming out.

  • Around the 200 dollar mark it's better value…

  • -1

So it’s a Nintendo Switch lite. What are you switching??

    • games

  • +3

Switch Lite vs Switch really depends on your use case.

If like me, you have a family - get the regular Switch, when you play with the kids, you can give a joy con to every player and gather round the TV. Mario Party/Smash/Kart is great for this. By yourself, the switch is nice in handheld mode.

Switch Lite is really for single players or someone who sees this as a 3DS upgrade.

Either way, I'd still get the regular Switch, the extra functionality is worth the US$100 over RRP.

    • Either way Nintendo pricing is whack for this.

  • +2

    same price on Amazon
with free delivery and I think you get cashback

  • -1

Disgusting how much Nintendo charge for their hardware and games. This should be 200 considering how inferior it is to the regular version.

    • +1

they have a cult following that allows them to charge extra

      • Yeah I have noticed this too. If you say anything against Nintendo, a bunch of 30 something year olds take it as an insult to their manhood and retaliate with everything they have.

        • +2

Hardly. Why would they release it lower than the 3DS, XL, New 3DS or New XL, let alone with the worse exchange rate.

          • @[Deactivated]: Because those systems are ages old? It is clearly meant to cater to that market.

        • Based off your previous comment, maybe its because what you're saying is wrong?

          • @ScruffTheJanitor: And like clockwork the Nintendo loyalists arrive. All good bro, you want to defend underpowered overpriced hardware with your clan, you go right ahead.

    • +1

If you are so sure then you must now all the numbers, right? Whats the cost to manufacture the original vs the lite?

      • Really? We don't have the numbers the OG system sells for?

We can't use common sense to see how the removed features, the "switching" a critical core feature of the original, no dock, no removal joycons is obviously worth more than the minimum discount they are giving on this.

It never seizes to amaze me how the Nintendo loyalists defend everything Nintendo. This is horrible value for what they have removed.

    • +1

It's priced at $200 US, which is 285 AUD, without import tax etc. Think that's pretty bang on a good price.

      • Why would I talk about US dollars? Are we in America? It should be 200 AUD for this to be value for money vs the OG.

  • That directional pad sucks on the pro controller. For example I can't play Tetris properly with it because it's so easy to trigger up/down when I mean to press left/right, and vice versa. I wonder if it's any better on the Lite. I would rather have the 4 directional buttons separated, like on the Joy-Con.

  • +4

    Switch RRP $469.95.

    Lite RRP $329.95.

    Stop complaining about the price.

Yeah, the Switch has dipped as low as $330 and is often on sale for $350 - $370 (and at this price is better value than the Lite). But the Switch was released over two years ago, the early adopters tax window has long and truly passed. If you're so price sensitive, don't buy new hardware at launch.

    • +4

It's a site that concerns itself with price. And here you are telling people to stop complaining about price? What the hell? LOL

      • Is it your first game system or why can't you cope with a product launching at RRP and then dropping when sales slow? Why would marketers launch at a bargain price when they can restrict supply and sell to fanbois. I paid $699 for the Mega CD, close to that for the original Playstation. PSP launched for a ridiculous RRP. Factored for inflation they were insanely expensive, but somehow we dealt with it like troopers.

      • Ozbargain is about sharing bargains and discussion, not whinging non-stop and making baseless, unreasonable claims.

        • +2

Right, God forbid anyone having a discussion over price on a bargain site lol

  • +3

If you're whining for any of the common reasons, this console isn't intended for you. It's for people who already have a console at the TV that they like, but who would like to replace their 3DS and in some cases, Vita. Personally I've been hanging out for this all year because the original Switch is objectively cumbersome, and the Lite won't be. It'll be a day one buy for me, happily, at $300.

You'd have to be potty to think Nintendo would drop a new version of a current gen console for <$300 in Australia. The 2DS XL is still ~$200, and the Pro version (almost definitely still coming given the rumours about the Lite were mostly true) clearly isn't ready. They'd have to have rocks in their head to undercut the Original version like that.

And, let's have some foresight here. 3rd parties are going to be all over the deficiencies like a rash. I'd almost guarantee accessory companies will already be working on a competitive capture card (because the market will be huge) so the whimpering about it not talking to a TV or monitor will be a short term inconvenience at very best.

  • Just sitting back with my boxing day 100 buck 3ds, tons of cheap games from eBay. Not in any rush to get this.

  • can you use 2DS/3DS game cartridges on this?

    • +3

      No - this is a Switch, not a 3DS

  • -2

The switch pro will launch with BOTW2, whenever that may be. It seems pretty obvious nintendo knows it needs a zelda game for a launch. Gamecube and Wii U didnt have that, failures. 3DS didn't have it, and they had to cut the price after seeing OOT didn't get them the sales and it almost failed. After so many people had 3DS' you may think you couldn't convince people to buy an updated model, well enter the new 3ds released with majoras mask.

We all saw what happened with the Wii, couldn't have gone any better, thanks twilight princess. The switch is doing great too because BOTW.

Switch lite is being released with a zelda game (links awakening). So I think they're cluing into the formula.

Switch pro and BOTW2 will release on the same day.

    • No evidence of a Switch Pro, the next one will be called Switch Plus as it's only slightly better in the GPU department but double the RAM.

  • Just ordered. Thanks OP. Can't wait for this. I rarely get access to the TV and I travel for work. Makes total sense that I have my own switch. Then family can play with the docked switch.

  • Seems you can get it $10 cheaper on Amazon preorder if you're a prime member.

  • Is anyone else completely disinterested in this generation of Nintendo console. I LOVED the Wii. Still use them actually. I bought WIIUs second hand and was fairly meh about them. The more they lock it down the less interested I get. And no it's not about piracy. The Wii and WiiU with the Wii controller hand all kinds of innovative uses. I remember one set of software actually turned them into a DIY smartboard.

    • Have a look at the sales of the Nintendo Switch. Seems its just you.

      • I know sales have been good and that it is popular but I seriously doubt it's "just me". Thanks for the downvote though.
