      Why?

        Everyone has HDD horror stories.

Mine is with Western Digitals. Their portable drives have the USB port built into the HDD board, so in the event of a USB port failure (thanks, toddler) then you can't shuck the drive to recover your data.

Still, would have been beneficial for gilbarc to provide -some- substance to his opinion.

        • This literally just happened to me.

          • @unit0000: Oh no!

IF it's just the plug, AND you're good with a soldering iron you can attempt a recovery effort with a USB cable…

            • @Switchblade88: I am not good with a soldering iron unfortunately. I tried to pull it to pieces and put the drives into another shell, but it didn't work.

            • @Switchblade88: Rarely used my wd portable yet it failed.

My wd controller/USB adapter was attached on really tightly. Took 15 min to pry them apart, focused on the plastic part between power and data, worked fine in an orico caddy, could access all my data.

Personally I have used quite a few Seagate portable hard drives and never had any issues, they are my go to for storage.

    • Me too. No real reason I chose Seagate over WD, but the dozen or so I've had over the years have rarely failed

    • Same here. I guess we are the lucky ones then? If anything, the only one that failed on me was WD, but even then, it was my dumbass fault for dropping it by accident few times.

5x 1TB platters inside, Wow. At what number will they stop?

    Review, if anyone is curious

Live long enough, and you'll have horror stories with any/all brands. Next you'll tell me there's a mobile provider without blackspots.

What would be the pros/cons of using something like this as a media drive that's always connected, rather than an internal drive?

    • +1

As a media drive it should be fine as long as you aren't constantly running torrents off it. If the drive doesn't have enough inactivity to spin down they can get a bit warm inside these cases during summers but otherwise no problems.

      • You seem knowledgeable and in short of research time so maybe you can answer:

With 5 in raid 5 via a powered usb3 hub, online 24/7 but only used heavily about 3 hours per day, while I expect to have problems with this? I only need about 50mb/s so I don't mind if the usb port is the bottleneck…

  • Just bought a 4tb last week from HN. Oh well. Can never have too much external storage?

  • Does reformatting this drive to use as external storage for an xbox one delete any stored media (photos/videos) on the drive?

    • +2

      Yes, almost certainly!

  • OMG the price is getting ozbargained and its up 2c now.

  • Don't forget the 3Tb Seagate at Officeworks for $99 is an almost equivalent price per GB. And you've got local availability and warranty.t

    • But the 5TB is $300! Haha

    • I just bought a 6TB Seagate for $215 yesterday from OW. (needed it for offsite server backups) but this 5tb deal is better (pity I couldn't wait)

Requires external power, is not a portable drive. You can get a 10Tb for $250 if you want to go down the external power path.

So much disk space, so little cash.

Years (1994) ago I went to Sweden to see their photo library server. They had a tape robot which could store 154TB*. It was worth Millions, it's amazing that I can buy an equivalent amount of storage for about $5500 and keep it in my bedroom.

    • The tape robot was a Storage Tech. A very small version is seen in the movie "Clear and Present Danger". At the time, I was told that the CIA actually had 16 of them.

Nice. Price has fallen $1.48 to $157.53

    • Thanks, updated.
