Just about anything else is better than Swann

    • What would you recommend?

        Duckk

        • Thanks for the lame joke. Anyone got any actual recommendations?

          That really quacked me up!

    • It depends what you want. The RRP is a joke, but here is better.

For average home security, they have a 4-camera AHD system with 1TB for $280.
Sure you can do a little better with no-name Chinese products, but the software and support will be even worse.
Mine watches my driveway, letterbox and front door, so I know if Auspost really did deliver the missing package that tracking said was delivered. (No they did not.)

If you want a commercial-grade system to do face-ID in the dark, you'll need to spend a lot more.

      • Thank you. We've recently had an incident at home and want to invest in a good system and not sure which brands are better than others. Swann seems to get negative responses. Wireless preferred for easy setup. I do like the idea of the cloud included.

        • Check out ipcamtalk.com if you're interested in understanding the options. A lot of the systems people talk about there will cost more than you're probably thinking, but there's some good general advice in the cliff notes of the wiki.

      • Swann is crap, if you praised their software and crap oyt the Chinese cheapo then obviously you haven't done your research, most other no name Chinese one can easily be integrated with universal cctv software and offer way more functionality than swann's proprietary system.

    • I bought a swann wifi cam 5+ years ago and it's complete rubbish.

Sure, the camera itself is ok, but because of its proprietary software, lack of updates and support, it makes it a useless paperweight.

One of those standalone "swannview" ones? Yes, not much use. Standard cameras plus DVR/NVR is better.

  • I know people bag Swann, but I bought this one new a few years ago:

This refurb one is $599.97 (assume before the extra 20% off) - I paid about $650 new from Kogan!! (Go figure)

I am happy with it - looking at the monitor right now showing my front door and street. Yes the software is a bit clunky but I am happy with it.

It’s not a bad idea to buy more cameras than you think you will need. Buying them individually later is a very expensive proposition if you want to expand the system or need to replace a dead’n.

I recently brought 5MP Reolink 4 camera system (POE) from Amazon - no requirement to have power to each camera is amazing. It has an 8port POE and 2TB hard drive integrated. Cameras have microsd in them also for recording as well as sending back to main unit.

Setup No-ip to allow it to view cameras from my phone anywhere I have internet. Adding cameras are about $90 each for 5MP. I was looking at Hikvision and Dahua but for the price, I couldn't go past the Reolink.

  • Amy recommendations for a wireless alarm (sensor) system? Prefer under $500.
