I'm must be officially old, but how dafaq is this a bargain?

    • +1

      If you aren't a subscriber, the 22 CUSTOM Ninja emoticons aren't available! :O /s

      • +10

If you're so sarcastic regarding the deal, why post it? Unless you're secretly a closet Ninja fan, but are afraid of the hive mentality pertaining to Fortnite on sites such as this

        • +2

I enjoy playing the game of Fortnite every now and then and know a bit about the popular pros. I'm sure there are some OzBargainers who will take advantage of the deal. :)

Point noted though - I'll remove the sarcasm from the deal post out of respect for the genuine fans.

    • +2

Usually subscriptions are paid for specific perks and whatnot.

All I'm getting from this post is that Ninja is a corporate shell of a human who is fearful about the decline of Fortnite's popularity and is therefore taking any and every partnership deal that gets thrown at him because capitalism.

Regardless, not exactly an exciting deal.

      • I wonder what he was paid to move to Mixer.

      • -1

Corporate shell because he got offered a good deal and took it while it's available? A bit ridiculous. I assume you have a job and don't work for free. Please accept my apologies if you only earn a barely-living wage working for a charity and spend the rest of your time volunteering for other charities.

Oh, and FWIW, I don't watch streamers and only first heard of Ninja when he teamed up with Drake (who's Drake? I'm old) which was apparently newsworthy. So don't mistake me for a Ninja fanboi who needs to carry water for the guy.

        • -1

Lol. You don't know me. As a general rule I'm pretty against the way our current level of society prioritises and celebrates wealth acquisition over all other aspects of existence. I'm not for taking more money than you need. I believe people need to be educated on the world outside of the limitations of capitalism like we are at the moment in order to stop bigger issues such as climate change and the destruction of our oceans through single use plastics.

That doesn't relate to the original post or comment whatsoever, but neither does whether or not you guage someone's value by the factors of "are they rich" or "do they devote all their time to charity".

And in response to your first comment, do some research on Ninja. Look at how much he earns. Then see if you can honestly say it's justified to call it "ridiculous" to criticise him taking huge corporate sponsorships from Microsoft of all companies.

Did you get your free subscription?

i got a discount because im under 21

@HKS: and that explains how you like such a bland human being

      • +7

Someone had too much salt in their breakfast this morning

          • +5

            @HKS: You're trying too hard.

          • @HKS: Everyone has varying opinions on different subject matters. Just because you're a fan of Ninja and others aren't doesn't mean they're always wrong. If you don't agree, just suck it and move on.

  • +4

I wonder if this was a wise move. Must have been offered a boatload of cash to move.

He'll bring a few viewers with him, but other famous streamers will have to make the move for Ninja to fully succeed.

    • -8

Your comment suggests you're actually invested in this platform of entertainment…

The dude is a multi millionaire at this point and this decision, even if a massive disaster, will hardly affect him.

As it stands, he's a flesh billboard for whatever corporations want to throw their logo next to his name.

      • +2

Just a casual viewer, not of him though.

I'm just interested in if it is a good or bad move for his career. Not that he would care, making 500k a month.

If some website offered me 25m (speculation) to keep doing the same thing I sure would. If it fails to take off, I have 25m.

can someone explain what ninja, mixer and twitch are

    • +6

Twitch - streaming platform owned by Amazon
Mixer - streaming platform owned by Microsoft
      Ninja - professional gamer/popular streamer

    • +2

I'm similarly baffled. The idea of paying to watch someone else play computer games is something I just can't get my head around. But it seems the kidz luv dis stuff.

      • +1

you dont have to pay anyone?

      • +2

It's not so much the idea of paying to watch, more so handing over some money to someone to allow them to do what they love as a job who just happens to stream their game play.

I get a free Twitch sub every month with Amazon Prime and I usually jump on twitch to see if someone is playing my favourite SNES game so I can send the subscription their way. I don't watch any of the stuff though.

        • more so handing over some money to someone to allow them to do what they love as a job who just happens to stream their game play

Isn't ninja handed over something to the tune of $500k a month to have coloured hair and play video games?

          • outdated article
      • +9

I suppose a similar thing could be said about paying to go watch sports but yeah I get it.

        • I'd say exactly the same… When I'm too lazy, tired, or lacking in genuine talent to play a game, I'll watch a streamer for a while.

Can't stand watching team sports though.

      • It's not generally about the game but the streamer and their personality.

People watched PewDiePie because of his reactions and comments while playing games.

It's like that but for 8 hours at a time.

        • +2

Funny, I avoid watching PewDiePie for exactly the same reasons.

      • Video games are bigger busines than sport now. Which is why the clever sport teams are rushing to get into professional Esports.

The fortnite world champion earns more prize money per event than our top sports people (federer, Tiger woods etc). Add in direct monetisation of livestream on youtube, Twitch, Mixer. Gamers can have a good life.

        • +3

I imagine the rate of success is low. There aren't too many like Ninja, Dr. Disrespect, Shroud, etc. But many largely unheard of streamers trying to launch and grow a platform, with relatively low levels of success ranging from failed start-ups to low-burning capers that supplement another income to maybe a few that can use it as a sole income (Bajostream as an Aussie example).

Some industries are brutal… there's limited room for a Federer and a Hamilton and a Spieth, and limited room for a DiCaprio and a Gosling and a Stone.

I'm barely a gamer (and I've got a professional career that I'll probably never match in income by trying another industry), but I wouldn't even attempt streaming if it was a more central passion in my life. Those kind of hours gaming and streaming, and the associated exposure, would play havoc with most people's physical and mental wellbeing, I think.

        • False dichotomy. They're not competing businesses, for the most part they're in completely seperate, mutually independent markets. You can love Sport and also love eSport, which is why popular sports stars play video games.

In any case, check the pay cheques of the top 100 athletes, or the amount of money raked in from Pro Sports like the NBA or EuroLeague.

And like every other streamer who switches…. for the money…. they will switch back as soon as their deal ends

    • He signed a 6 year deal which an a long time for content creation.

      • Everything I am reading says it’s 12 months (which is standard deal for streamers paid to switch)

        • +1

no way would he destroy his relationship with twitch for less then 3 years

          • +1

@Kostie: "Ninja has initially signed on for 12 months with an option to extend beyond that depending on success of the switch, Ninja's management are believed to be behind the 12 month term to limit any risk"

  • He got 500k subscribers (not followers) just today. One day.

And why on earth did he leave Twitch ffs?

Except maybe a big fat cheque from Microsoft to kickstart this dead/struggling streaming platform.

    • +1

He is also going to serve as a Mixer Ambassador which apparently will pocket him a cool 2 Million USD

      • Mixer Ambassador?!

        Pfft. I'm an Xbox Ambassador!

Only difference is, I don't get paid lol.

  • So mixer cuts sparks from every content creator and now uses that money to pay millions to Tyler?

They should rename Mixer to Ninjas Stream.

Everyone is going to leave lol.

For those that don't know, viewers earnt sparks by watching streams, you could use those sparks and give them to your favourite streamer and they would earn money from those sparks if they got enough sparks each week.

Now sparks have no monetary value for the smaller streamers. It's all a big (profanity) you to them, the original people who made what mixer is today.
