    Wasn't Vostro always the lowest end at Dell? Over 2K RRP seem a bit off for this laptop

    • -2

      Yes, I believe that to be the case. This one is a little different as it has a dedicated GPU (NVIDIA® GeForce® MX130 with 2GB GDDR5) opposed to on-board graphics like most of the other Vostro models.

    • Think Vostro's their business line. They're always a little more expensive than the Inspiron line (which is their lowest end).

    • +1

      Inspiron are the entry-level models. Vostro is part of their business grade laptops, which have 12 month on-site warranty.

  • An almost identical model is available @ $989.00 but has the i5-8265U Processor

  • What’s difference of Dell latitude vs. Vostro? Sorry about the ignorant question.

    • +16

      Rough rule of thumb:

      Inspiron = cheap home grade
      XPS = quality home grade
      Vostro = basic business grade
      Latitude = quality business grade
      Precision = workstation grade

      • How are the g3,5,7 models fit in? Cheap home grade?

        • They occupy the space between cheap & XPS.

        • You can also add:

          Gaming desktops / G Series laptops = cheap gaming
          Alienware = quality gaming

          Most products are further divided into 3 different model classes (3000 5000 7000 series) — see xuqi's comment below.
          G Series laptops are further divided into G3 G5 G7.

      • Any ideas on why XPS looks better than most of Dell's lineup?

        • Because it's designed to, and it's priced accordingly.

        Good info, although worhwhile noting further granulation within families:

        Latitude:

        3000 serries - basic (cheaper build quality & components (for e.g. Realtek in-place of Intel LAN, etc.)
        5000 series - mid-range
        7000 series - high-end

    Review for i5 version of this machine: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-Vostro-15-5581-Laptop-Rev…

    In summary:
    Non-glossy screen with ok colour & contrast.
    Keyboard, trackpad & speakers are ok.
    Their i5 machine was cool & quiet under office use, and efficient on battery.
    Poor cooling when pushed harder (aggressive fans & throttling of their i5 machine).
    Dim screen, 213 nits. Also, slow PWM will bother sensitive eyes at screen brightness < 10%.
    Graphics card only good for older games at low-ish resolutions.
    Antenna 1x1, limits wifi speed.
    Small battery, 42Wh.
    Their 128GB NVMe SSD was ridiculously slow.
    Plastic case.
    Very slow SD slot.

  • Thanks for the post. Bought one of these for home office use. Specs seem decent for the cost ($67 less with CashRewards cashback). $982
