    such a free spirit!
why even bother? get a cordial then

    • +1

It’s not free. It’s $35.99 plus delivery, Dad!

    • +1

      such a free spirit!

(In my tuxedo voice) Free? No. Available, yes.

      • +1

it's spirit free spirit, I got your OZB spirit, mate

    • It effectively is cordial, just liquor-flavored cordial…

  • +12

There are lots of things I dont understand … but I think I have hit a new high. If these were less than $10 each it might be worth having some for fun but for these prices Ill pass and stick to getting drunk on my cocktails.

  • +9

That's some fkn expensive cordial. I'll stick to Cottee's thanks

  • +24

Errr.. why would someone pay the same amount as real spirits, for non alcoholic? As above, they're basically cordial and should be priced as such. Also, doesn't alcohol get taxed which causes prices to be higher? Why is this priced the same, without alcohol?

    • +1

I guess, it they had alcohol they would target $70-90 range (based on label design and bottle shape)

      • That's as standard bottle design as you can get
Can buy those bottles at the $2 shop

        • Obviously it's not worth that much, he is saying that it compares in style to an expensive spirit, not Smirnoff Red

          • -1

            @pdtmathieson: funny,

            so whats the next claim?
this will get you as drunk as a real one as well

          • +1

@pdtmathieson: The expensive ones are expensive because they taste not-like-paint-thinner despite having a lot of alcohol. What's this got going for it?

            • @HighAndDry: That's not necessarily true - maybe for expensive Jim Beams'. I'm not advocating for this product, but it's (one of the) first to market and therefore attracts a premium. If it's at a discount to it's regular price, over priced or not, it is a bargain.

Some people might be amazed to find out that not everyone drinks alcoholic drinks for the alcohol.

              • @pdtmathieson:

Some people might be amazed to find out that not everyone drinks alcoholic drinks for the alcohol.

I wouldn't be amazed, I'd just be confused. No one I've ever talked to actually likes the taste of alcohol, but they drink for the buzz.

This is… the taste of alcohol (presumably) without the buzz.

                • @HighAndDry: I had a big reply planned but I really can't be bothered haha I understand why people think this is ridiculous but if they do, they're not the people who are going to buy it. End of story.

    • +2

Errr.. why would someone pay the same amount as real spirits, for non alcoholic?

As someone who holds many gatherings, and has a few friends who are alcoholics, but haven't come to terms with that yet; I can see this being VERY useful.

      Also interesting;
Have you ever fed someone non alcoholic shots before without telling them?
By about shot 5, in the 'test group' the placebo drinker is less effected, but still shows obvious signs of a lower inhibition.
"Its OK, I'm just drunk". Done this first hand :) It's intriguing to say the least.

Besides; there's something about "mixer drinks" at a party that's cool; and as a non-drinker, I'd get to join in!

      • +4

Use an old bottle of vodka. Fill it with water and you have a $0 fix for those people.

        • None of us are rich enough to drink vodka that is truly flavour free :P

Also, there's a missing burn that quite a few of these drinks manage to simluate with things like ginger extracts and such.

      • +3

These seem really good examples of alcohol free alternatives that can help people like me who are firner/recovering alcoholics, especially in social situations.

Price is steep though. But damn… I've been sober for 21 years now and it would be great to taste something like a g&t or a Martini again :)

        • +2

I've been sober for 21 years now and it would be great to taste something like a g&t or a Martini again :)

On the other hand, this product could be a gateway drug… I would hate for you to end your winning streak. Is it worth the risk?

        • +2

Don’t do it. Stick to your winning streak. 💐🙏🤗

          • +2

@voteoften: Thanks guys. Appreciate the support :) and the reminder of things that I can probably live without.

        • +1

I've been sober for 21 years now and it would be great to taste something like a g&t or a Martini again :)

Firstly, damn good for you - that must take some crazy willpower.

Secondly though, after 21 years are you sure you'd even be able to tell the difference between the real thing and a vaguely similar knock-off anyway?

          • @HighAndDry: Willpower, good fortune, great support, etc… I've benefited from when things have worked and have tried to give back in different ways.

And tbh, no… I couldn't tell. Which was something that I was thinking about. What happens if you bring this to a party, make yourself one, have to get up, and someone decides to play a prank replacing it with the real stuff. Scary complications for me, but also for ppl I'd come in contact with afterwards.

I'm not preaching, but it's one reason I don't drink at all: I don't have that button in my brain that says, you've had enough, you can stop etc.

  • +3

i can understand non-alcoholic beer, but this? why?

    • There's something about "mixer drinks" at a party that's cool; and as a non-drinker, I'd get to join in!

      • +2

        cool?

        • As in Fashionable\Hip.

A "Gin and Tonic" or a "Vodka and Cranberry" at a social gathering has a 'mature' stigma over say, a glass of cordial, like people are implying.

          • +1

            @MasterScythe:

a 'mature' stigma over say, a glass of cordial

Are you implying that cordial isn't cool? Have you not heard of the Cool-Aid Man?

            • @hey aj: Wait, isn't that Kool-Aid? Withakay?

              • @HighAndDry: Yes, but it is a deliberate play on words to serve my purpose.

Hence 'Cool' is in bold noting that it has been changed from the original word but also implies that Kool-Aid Man is cool.

This basis serves as my main point of argument that I would rather be the guy drinking cordial at the party than the guy pretending to drink alcohol at the party.

          • @MasterScythe: The problem is - you'll still know you're just drinking cordial.

  • +3

    No.

  • +12

It's pricer but it comes in a nice glass bottle that your can recycle and earn 10 cents back.

  • +21

I think the only thing "impossibly crafted" here is the profit margin.

The alcohol excise charged by the ATO is $23.90 for a 700ml bottle of 40% alcohol spirit, such as scotch whisky.

E.g. for a $40 bottle of 40% alc by vol scotch, the price net of alcohol charges is $16.10. That is the real price target for something like this, IMO.

    https://www.ato.gov.au/business/excise-and-excise-equivalent…

    • But … These have zero alcohol, do they still pay that tax? So we are paying for something that's not there AND duty on top!

      • +1

Probably have to pay Millennial Tax, same as avocado on toast, it’s about 800%.

      • Definitely won't pay the tax, their profit margin will be amazing - a lot of which will need to go into marketing to get this over the line, mind you.

  • This makes bottled water at the footy look cheap!

"Pioneered by Mark Livings of Kinetic Marketing" … certainly is marketing at its best.

  • This should be posted to OzRidiculous!

    • Oh wow what a great joke

      • Do you think so?

  • +4

$36 ($45 RRP) for 700ml of infused water. LOL.

At least the brand name seems to be a play on the word Liar.

    • +3

Somebody call the burn unit, we can use these non-alcoholic beverages to douse the flames while we wait.

      • +1

More benefits of this product around every corner.

  • +2

Lyre, you're overpriced. How about reconsider your target market and come back?

    • If you think it's overpriced you're obviously not in the target market. I think a $20 cocktail at a bar is overpriced, but I'm not in the target market for $20 cocktails.

  • +3

Few of their products on Lightning Deals today and actually selling well, better than the normal Aliexpress crap on Lightning Deals. So clearly there is some market for this product.. Like it seems obvious they must of thought of the same things you are all asking and any financial backers must of asked the same questions, so they must have a decent business plan or research that shows there is a market.

  • +2

swig this from bottle, stashed inside a brown paper bag on the trains.
the booze smell will warn others off, ensuring a nice 6-seat configuration all to yourself while being legally suitable to drive yourself home from the station.

    • Same as having a zero-alcohol beer in the office at lunch time.

  • -7

    The worlds officially gone crazy

    • +3

Which of these warranted the neg?

The deal is not the cheapest available
      Defective product
      Major issues with retailer

Or is it more deserving of no vote:

The deal doesn't apply to you
You dislike the RRP of the product

      Rules: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

  • Waa waa waa

This product doesn’t interest me and therefore I can’t understand how anyone else could be interested.

    Waa waa waa

  • This is a new concept in the industry, and therefore will always be the expensive, premium version first. Major companies will eventually bring out versions of this, and the price will spiral down. The same goes for any new product - fidget spinners were a lot more expensive when they first came out before every factory in China was pumping them out.

  • +2

FYI soft drink is like $1-2 per litre and tastes a whole lot better than gin, tequila, scotch, etc…

  • -1

The number of brain dead comments by alcos in this thread is astounding. No wonder doctors say this country is in an alcoholism epidemic.

  • +1

This is not a spirit, but it is pure genius. Up there with the guy that sells bottled Australian air to Chinese customers.

    • +2

Spaceballs was ahead of its time!

  • The big Lyre's, how have they been able to make this if it was impossible to craft? (pedant exclusion zone)

  • +2

A lot of people seem to be missing the point; this is a product that has a market, has competitors, and (apparently) is discounted.

I'm unsure of how this compares, but there is a direct competitor product (Seedlip) from Dan Murphys showing for $49.99 / 700ml.
From Melbourne, 'Brunswick Aces' have a couple in their range.
From Denmark and the UK, there are others.

    Is it a bargain?
Up to the individual consumer to determine, and I imagine that would include personal preferences (much like there are with preferences for different types of 'real' gins).

    • Absolutely, couldn't agree more. My family owns a bottleshop, and we stock the Seedlip products and they sell alright. People are interested. It's never going to be a huge seller, but there is plenty of spirits that sell worse.

  • +2

I wish you the best of luck but I'm out.

    • Had too much whiskey?

  • 'Non-Alcoholic Spirits'

Well that's about as useful as tits on a bull.

  • "Deal is 0% Claimed"

    Oh boy…
