Free for life or free for 12 months? "To ensure the site is sustainable these donation perks will expire after a year."

    • are you donating anything?
Your free account isn't a donation to them.

      • No, I'm not. So I'm not contributing to the sustainability of the site. Therefore my account may expire after a year to encourage me to choose one of the paid options. Don't know for sure, but it seems quite possible.

        • I interpret it as free account for life, and those donation options give you 1 year of benefits

          • @Salmando: You would be correct. Have no idea where he got the impression that your account ever expires.

            • @Agret: At the very first page it says for the sustainability of the site, free accounts are reviewed after 12 months.

              • @John Dough: I think that just means if your account has been inactive too long they will delete it

            • +1

@Agret: Most of the time the free account is free for life. The idea being that 5dl/50 API is not enough for most people that use the service. They are hoping that you will like the service and community and choose them for your paid subscription at some point in the future.

              • @masuta: I guess we will find out in 12 months! But free is free :)

  • For those wondering about the advantage of Usenet, the availability of content doesn't depend on the popularity of that content. If you're trying to track down a particular art-house movie on BitTorrent, once the last person stops sharing it, it has gone. It may be available for only a few months. With Usenet, it will expire when the servers run out of space and it is dropped to make way for new content. That will probably be years. The other advantage is speed. Bittorrent speeds depend on the health of the torrent. As the number of seeds drops into single figures, you have to hope that the remaining seeders have plenty of bandwidth. Usenet generally gives you all the speed your own bandwidth can handle.

I haven't used it years, though. I got sick of dodging my way through the dmca takedowns. It may be better with a decent indexing site. I'll have a look. Thanks op.

    • With a decent indexer DCMA is a non issue, even for older content most of the time.

The very rare time you might want an older file that have been DCMA'd, you would often struggle on a public torrent site unless you wanted some terrible reencoded low quality rip.

Not sure I agree with your biggest and best comment. I'd rate slug at a B grade indexer.

    • +1

could you recommend an A Grade indexer?

      • -2

        nzbgeek

        • +1

Nzbgeek is in no way A Grade as there is an indexer much better then it.

          Its still good though.

registered purely because of 300+ upvotes, as I have no idea what it is. Dunno if I would even be bothered to find it out.

    • For the most part downloading music, movies, and software. You could use it like a cloud service if wanted.
Free setups are a bit shitty, and if you don't like anything obscure its likely not worth your time compared to any typical torrenting setup.

But it has many things i can't find elsewhere - many 1920's and 30's movies and such - that make it worth my while.

Outside of Australia, people might care more for the added security it CAN offer.

  • Signed up - thanks OP.

Their music collection looks interesting - there appears to be 12,000 or so pages, totalling around 240,000 CDs. It remains to be seen how many are current, however.

TV series? Lots of UK stuff, which is great.

As other posters have said, there might be better alternatives - but worth a go.

  • I downloaded NZBGET.

What are you guys using for the host name? I can't get Drunkenslug's to work??

    • yer im new to this and having the same issue.

      • Yeah, that's not how it works.

In a nutshell, this is what you need to do:

      1) Find a usenet provider, see: https://www.reddit.com/r/usenet/wiki/providerdeals
Every couple of months, these usenet providers run super cheap deals. Last couple of deals were all $20-$30/yr unlimited usage plans. Preferably use NTD providers since takedowns take longer to process, thereby ensuring your downloads always complete.

      2) Get a usenet download client. Two two most recommended are: https://sabnzbd.org/ and https://nzbget.net/

      3) Enter usenet server settings in these download clients

      4) Use an Indexer (such as drunkenslug) to find stuff. These sites host .NZB files.
Download client opens these .NZB files and processes/fetches your downloads.

Welcome to the world of usenet.

      • Thanks for the list of provider deals. How can you tell which ones are NTD?

      • Thanks. I used one of the links provided to pay for access to a provider.

I'm all set and my download list is now doing its thing.

      • I'll have to watch for the next deal. I've been paying $40 per quarter for eons.

    • It's not a Usenet server, just an indexer. If you want to get started try using a free account with xsusenet

      https://my.xsusenet.com/register/product/1

When you're ready to pay them I recommend newsgroup ninja

      http://www.dereferer.org/?https://www.newsgroup.ninja/en?pro…

Did you get a subscription for a provider? This deal is just to get the nzbs and you need a usenet provider.

  • Bin Reader and Usenet Farm is my combination.

Quickpar for those that find issues with the PAR2 files.

  • Their content doesn’t seem to be extremely high. Wouldn’t the standard invite only private tracker suffice?

  • +1

Can't wait to download all those Linux distros.

  • +2

This entire post is Bizarre to me. It's like using TeamSpeak instead of discord.

    • Yes, but discord is selling your info. (Not sure if ts does)

    • What indexer do you use?

  • Thanks OP!

  • I signed up on Saturday. I didn't realise it was usually closed. I was looking for something i couldn't find elsewhere.

  • No idea what this is and don't think I need it, but register anyway

  • +3

Loving the false reports about illegal stuff. Nothing illegal about Usenet. It's nothing but a file sharing system.

  • Awesome OP. Thanks ever-so-much!!

This is taking me back to the (90s ) days of 0 day warez…

    • remember IRC get commands?

      • +4

That, and constantly getting slapped around with a large trout.

      • +1

I remember my excitement when downloading warez at 50kb/s on ADSL1 for the first time after years of dialup speeds

        • i couldn't push the telstra guy out of my house fast enough!

now they're not allowed in my house period :)

i do miss the funky dialup modem sounds though. kidz these dayzz just don't know the soundz.

          • @cynicalmike: also before IRC warez, there was BBS ;) haha

            • +1

@FeZZa21: also before anything digital we'd get a list from some older guy in primary school and you'd bring a box of blank 5 1⁄4" floppy disks and get them back a week later with whatever you wanted.

              commodore 64 yo

              • @cynicalmike: I was in the 3 1⁄2" floppy disk generation, mortal kombat 2 in a box haha

  • wow this is amazing for books

  • Have no idea why I need this but took the Ozb advice and registered 😂

  • Wooo Linux ISO's here I come

  • Excellent additional indexer. I already get 5 free per 24 hrs at nzbplanet which at certain times of the year is simply not enough.

    • Used to have a free account with NZBPlanet, just tried to login to it (has been a long time) and it said my account doesn't exist. Also says no registrations unless you pay :(

  • I tried usenet once. I really couldn't get it to work. It sucked. I'll be giving this another shot though.

This setup works if one is into TV shows

Sonnar searches Drunkenslug for tv show, finds it and downloads small NZB file, SABnzbd uses that NZB file to download show from a Usenet server.

Get Sonarr to access DrunkenSlug indexor.

Get an account with a UseNet provider.

Get SABnzbd to access the UseNet providers servers.

Look for a youtube vid that details how to set these two programs up together (Sonarr and SABnzbd). It can all be a bit complex and would not have been able to do it without various Youtube howto vids.

Once this is done, you are all set to go. You just tell Sonarr what TV show you want and it will look up the indexer, find it and tell SABnzbd to download it from the usenet and then it will file it neatly into a TV folder for you.. all automagically.

      • Sonarr looks interesting; I'll have to give it a go. Integration with SABnzbd might just get me away from Forte Agent, but old habits die hard.

        • Know what you mean. I used Grabit for like forever as whenever I looked at Sonarr and SABnzbd I was just left scratching my head. Anyway, I persisted, found a vids to help me figure it all out, buggered things up a few times but and its a dream now.

I just fire up Sonnar and SAB every day and thats it… all automatic from then on.

  • I remember when my ISP (Bigpond) had a Usenet service.

  • People still torrent in 2019?

    • Whats the alternative?

      • Netflix, steam, its not the 90s, digital is cheap

        • +2

I have Netflix and amazon prime and kayo sports. All great. But there is still a lot of content I can’t get through those channels. That’s where Usenet and the plex server come in

        • Steam has been going up in price the last few years, no longer cheap to buy from there. Always use www.isthereanydeal.com

          • @Agret: Apex legends is the best thing going atm, and its free ¯_(ツ)_/¯

        • +1

Oh cool, so with netflix I can access 5% of the content I want to access.

          What about the other 95%?

Even Foxtel + Stan + Foxtel is maybe 50% of content I want.

  • +1

    Missed it. (profanity).

    • +1

      Didn't miss much.

  • +1

Lol can’t believe an indexer was posted on here. I think I got an account when they opened registration a couple months back after the best one shut down. I signed up to at least 5 indexers and found his one to be meh

    • Which indexer do you find better?

  • Op needs a wake up call. this site is full of viruses. A1 gaming titles at 35mb = fail virus attempt and this is just about everything on the site. absolutely horrible recommendation lol
