I don't care who you are, there is literally zero reason to ever spend $700 on a tap, let alone $1400. What a joke.

I got my tap for $2 from altavista amazon special.

      • +14

I got the Ask Jeeves version.

    • +2

      there is literally zero reason

There is a reason: You want it and are willing to spend.

Personally: Fancy car? Whatever. High end gaming rig? Bah. Awesome, even overpriced, tap? Yes please.

This particular tap: Not for me.

      • But those purchases can mostly be demonstrated with evidence to have a reason. The "Fancy Car" whatever that is, may be a bit harder to justify while people starve around you.

        • evidence to have a reason

What evidence and/or reason would that be?

          • @afoveht: What do you mean? eg "High end gaming rigs" are required to be able to play the games you want to play for the cheapest price possible. An eleven seater car for a big family. It is not that hard.

            • +1

@Major Mess: A kickarse tap for someone wanting a kickarse tap is not that hard either. Of course I'm going to get it as cheap as possible. That might be $1399, it might be less if I have the good fortune of seeing a discounted one on OzB.

Also, how do you justify "play(ing) the games you want to play" while people starve around you?

    • But its complements your other Oliveri kitchenware

    • You could pay a metal engineer to make one from base stock with probably better tolerances for that sort of money.

Damn, does this dispense premium olive oil?

    • +7

      Holy water I think…

      • LOL why did this post get a +ve vote? I can't help it too..

  • Thanks, bought 10 of them.

    • +1

is that your alt account broden?

  • who is Oliveri Santorini anyway?

    • Some douchey company that thinks one of their taps is so good it's worth $1400.

      • I'm bit confused here, so this is Australian brand selling made in Italy product?

        • They are an import/exporter.

I heard the wanted to quit exporting and focus just on the importing.

And it's a problem, because I think the exporting is as important as the importing.

  • Yeah some stuff are worth paying but this $700 tap is just crazy over price.

Me thinks Gerry has been smokin' the devils lettuce.

    • +2

Never heard devils lettuce before, it genuinely cracked me up!

  • Even if free beer came out of it……..hmm………..yeah, I would.

  • I am willing to pay premium for taps that are not made in china because of potential hazard from the heavy metal containments like lead and nickel in the material. Stil but not at this premium

    • nickel Silver Brass is fairly common in tapware. It's then nickel plated and finished with chrome plating.

I'm not quite sure how to avoid nickel in tapware

      • The outer casing of the tapware is avoidable

It's all about the "brass" pipe which constantly in contact with the water you are drinking and cooking with.

Copper is expensive, dodgy manufacturers will do anything to cut the manufacturing cost.

I learnt from a kitchen tap I bought from AliExpress years ago.

        • +1

Tap outlets don't have a separate "inner pipe", it's all one solid piece after the hot and cold streams get mixed together. It will have at least some plating on the edge of the inside, if not further.

Regardless, the whole inside would get soaked in nickel and chromate plating solutions.

I work in the water supply industry. If you are worried about what happens to the water in the last 400mm of it's journey to your glass then you are somewhat blinkered in your thought process.

Animals crap and die in your water; multitudes of bottom feeding fish swim in it; the infrastucture still has lead jointed pipes; rusty steel; 100 year old degrading concrete; open canals directly adjacent to farms and suburban housing estates; open dams that are in heavily built up areas so all the diesel fallout goes into them.

It's good water but worrying about the tap at the end is like worrying about a paper-cut on your finger when there's a spear in your thigh.

    • My old pipe not made in China, still heavy metal polluted, it all depends on who made it, not where, but you get more chance to get a bad quality one from China. Just don't buy cheap things with no brand.

To risk being flamed : I have three of these. Granted I got them much cheaper on ebay, regardless they are great taps. I have one in the kitchen, one in the laundry. Bought the third for my in-laws.

    • What's "much cheaper?" Also how do these compare to a regular $20 tap from Bunnings?

      • +2

        < $200 each
They have a different colour to them, not chrome but like a hardened metal finish. Hard to explain. They look cleaner as well, less water spots when water dries on them.
Functionally they work great and have a higher arch, so you can fit big bowls under them etc.

If you're happier with a $20 Bunnings tap, then go for it. No different to high end : low end TV's, cars etc

Thanks..I have been waiting to buy this for almost a decade now. Perfect reason to apply for a home loan top up.

  • I purchased two similar units off AliExpress for around $60 each delivered. That is a much better option

    • Aliexpress may only made $3 on this $50 purchase, Oliveri Santorini will make $500 for a $600 tap.

  • made of gold?
