Bertocchi Smoked Pork Hock $4.50/kg (50% off) @ Woolworths

160

Spotted this in the deli cabinet at Woolworths. It was the unpackaged version for $4.50/kg though, the only plastic wrapped version at the store I visited was this one for $9.50/kg

The 50% discount possibly ends tomorrow.

As a person who has worked in retail for two decades I can tell you that usually expired stuff gets unwrapped and sold at such a discounted price

    • So you did this to people?

      • I am pretty confident everyone does.

considering that this is a 1/2 price special for all woolworths I highly doubt everyones hocks expired at the exact same time.

          • @neferseki: Correct, it's a nationwide sale. If the meat is old there is a hell of a lot of it, and it's coming from wools supplier.
Besides the store I go to rarely has meat get to the best before, they mark it 40% discount the day before and then 80% discount the day of. I track the dates so I can arrive as they mark it down.

            • @mapax: My guess is because winter is coming to a close people are less likely to make things like pea and ham soup so sales of hocks etc go down. They may be trying to get rid of stock before spring/summer comes round. This is pure speculation on my part though and has no basis whatsoever.

          • @neferseki: If it's a catalogue special obviously it's different

  • Pretty sure Costco is doing the same . They have like 2020 exp dates or so they say…. dum dum duuum

  • Any good recipe to try?

    • Pea and Ham soup.

  • Does anyone use smoked hock to make other things apart from pea and ham soup?

    • +2

I normally bake them as these ones still have all the meat on them.

Put the hock in a bowl (don't add water) and cook in a pressure cooker until the meat is easily removed from the bones, then stir fry with celery, beans, carrots, ginger and garlic plus a few black beans. It just tastes yum.

      • I’m interested in trying this.

Just to be clear, do you put the bowl with the hock into the pressure cooker?

If so, does it matter what the bowl is made from?

        • Yes, either porcelain or metal bowls will do as long as they fit into the pressure cooker.

    • cook hock in boiling water for 10 minutes and cut off the skin and meat from the bone then mixed it with sriracha hot chilli sauce and some drops of lemon juice.

      • That sounds nice

    • Pressure cook with packet of black beans, add liquid smoke if want, for 35mins then shred meat off and use for nachos, burritos…

    • Looks to be a decent makeshift cricket bat around the home.

  • is this processed or real stuff?

It is the lower portion of a pigs leg that has been cured and still has the bone in it.

  • Is this like pork knuckle? Pork knuckle in the air fryer is pretty good!

This is more like a small ham.

    Poor what??

  • Had to read that title twice… Smoked pork *ock

    • That is some nose-to-tail commitment.

  • Anyone picked one up lately? What was the use by date?

    • +1

They are from the deli. A label is printed that contains a purchase date but not use by.

      • Yes. I got one from the Deli yesterday. They were not vacuum sealed as the pic suggested, so I was a bit surprised.

    • I got one last night (soo tasty) and asked the guy, he said it should be finished in a couple of days (took that with a grain of salt). I shaved mine and put it in a vacuum box. Should last a week or so in the fridge I reckon, like my other deli goods.
