Pay the membership fee and use your new membership. At any time in the year, even day 364, you can cancel your membership for a full refund. This is not "free" but it will get you your money back. The one catch is that you're not allowed membership again for a full year after cancellation. So to really ozbargain, you'd need someone else to run the scam alongside. You cancel, and she takes the next year's membership cancelling at the last moment for her own refund. By then you'd be clear for another membership.

How long is the deal valid for? A bit of planning required for a trip to Costco, particularly as I have to convince my Sister in Law with membership to make the trip.
