Is It a Good Time to Buy an iPhone?

Kinda bored with Android, keen to buying a used iphone xs or xr (for the first time - Long time android user here).
Should i wait for the new iphones to drop (end of October) or it doesnt matter?

If the price drop on used phones is insignificant, i will buy now, what do you guys think?

Maybe buy some second hand ones. They tend not to discount them new.

    • yes, i meant second hand/used lol

September 10 apple will show off the new iPhone and it'll be available to buy by October. Now is a bad time to buy unless you don't want to wait a few months, they sell out fast so you might need to wait a few weeks after release anyway. The old phones will get cheaper when the new one comes out, it is known.

    • I edited my post, im talking about used/second hand phones

I see. Well iPhone 10 will be two years old when the new iPhone comes out, bound to be on sale new and used. Everyone's two year iPhone 10 contracts will be running out in October/November.

      • Wait. You can pick up discounted XS, or even more discounted X by then.

    • any idea how much cheaper? been eying the xs max for someone

  • How much cheaper is the iphone xr or xs likely to be after September?

I went android->iphone a couple years ago because I wanted a small phone, and the SE is pretty much the only option. Recently upgraded the SE to a second hand SE with larger capacity (128gb) for $250. Happy with it.
Last year Apple had cheap battery replacements, so there may be older, cheaper models around with fairly new batteries. Even my very old unit doesn't feel slow, if you would consider going back another gen or two.

Don't get your hopes up too much about iphones though. I think they're more boring than android, and don't really do anything much better. They do some things worse though, especially if you don't want to use apple services for everything (no voice control for spotify is ridiculous)
But it does feel simple, which is nice. I used to tinker with androids a bunch to get the most out of them. Now I don't even bother, things either work or they don't.

Quite simple really iphones are easy to use . Just like a plug and go mouse .

Galaxy is not . # in nightmare with sheety crap all over the place in weird locations to make it a nightmare .

    • -3

      Couldn't disagree more.
And clearly it's a case of depends what you're used to.

As an Android user, trying to do anything on my Mum's iPhone or iPads is a frickin nightmare.
Ask my sister for help (as she also owns iPhone and iPad) and she has no idea either, so I end up spending hours deciphering the illogical iOS system. ie where settings for one app like "Mail" are stored in a completely different location "Settings", why put App specific settings in a system wide location?
Thank god Apple finally updated their keyboard to show upper and lower case!

      • DP doesn't check out…..

      • It's early Alzheimer, it starts like that.

    Wut?

    • ARmmm ink iPhone user friendly .

      Galaxy opposite .

      • Are you using an iPhone to make these posts?

  • Probably the worst time to buy an iPhone lol. Wait 2 weeks for the new one to be released or get the outgoing model at a cheaper price

    • Then he'll have to wait for second generation, since first Apple never perfect. When second generation is out they'll announce iPhone 12. The circle of life.

  • Prices of iPhones generally don't go down much.

Ask bashter where he gets his iphones from BRAND NEW. lol

iPhone 8 dropped $100 last year, may happen again on 20/9 with new release. If you want to buy from Apple or retailer OP may as well wait 3 weeks current XR may drop $100.
But there is always gumtree where cash is king.

Danstar you sound like a kid that dropped his lollies.

      • $100 in 2 years isn't much of a drop…

And a kid who dropped his lollies would probably be upset….Not a very good comparison

        Ps. Where's your gumtree post ? :P :D

        • +2

Well that's all you get if buying retail. Least they hold some re sale value, Samsung phones start dropping prices from day dot.

  • What excitement do you expect to get out of an iPhone? Just curious.. (long time iPhone user here who has recently moved to Android)

    • -1

Probably about the same as an Android phone….

      • Thank you for providing the specificity that I asked for.
        /s

  • For me messages that simply pop up enough to be excited about .

  • What makes you bored of Android?

I would strongly suggest trialling an iphone first. I got an iphone for work a few years ago and it was a frustrating experience to say the least.

    • And same could be said with people who go from Apple to Android.

      • I passed from iphone to shitty alcatel android and not considering the obvious lack of quality it was a very simple process

  • It's never a good time to buy an Apple product. And bored of Android, where you actually have choices and freedom unlike iOS? Good luck with that the change hahaha.

    • For most, choices and freedom aren't needed in a phone. Doing the basics better then the rest is (for some) greater than being able to change you wallpaper easier or getting a ringtone (do people still do that?), etc. etc.

      • +1

Again with the generalisations which you try to use to cover the fact you have no concrete argument. The "basics" like file, photo and music transfers were not a straightforward experience on iOS. Simple things like changing the home screen grid layout, or choosing what's on your quick access menu, are by no means tools for a power user. Having freedom doesn't mean that you HAVE to spend hours customising things on Android. You can still use it straight out of the box. It just means that if you ever have the curiosity to play around and see what's possible, you'd probably be pleasantly surprised.

        • -4

Photos are easy to transfer over…the phone connects as if it's a external storage device.

Music, as you said "were", a hassle. Music is streamed now.

All those things you said about quick access and grid layout, is for me (and like most people I know) useless and irrelevant.

Like you said, depends on how you want to use it. If you said more "noob" friendly then yeah no question.

iPhone is faster than Android phones. …

Faster in terms of what? Processor? A quick youtube search on speed comparisons would prove this incorrect.

            Agree.

You can update iOS in iPhone whenever you want. …

I can choose when to upgrade software as well.

            No bloatware.

If bloatware makes no discernible difference in day to day usage speeds and fluidity, or impact on (expandable) storage capacity, is it even bloatware?

            Better re-sale value

            Agree.

              @spiff:

Like you said, depends on how you want to use it. If you said more "noob" friendly then yeah no question.

That's the basically the condescending meaning of user friendly

My partner has a Samsung, and some of the Samsung apps (like the messages app) have ads in them and would result in slower phone speed over time, which is widely known to happen to Android phones in general.

            @Danstar:

            iPhone is more user-friendly. …

It's a nightmare getting files on and off an iphone…

Slow down mate, you've commented on just about everything in this thread. We get it, you're an apple fanboy.

            • -1

@Caped Baldy: then don’t get an iPhone if you use it for files and struggle to work out how to get files on and off it then… simple

            • @Caped Baldy: Shall I use my
iPhone to call you a wah-ambulance?

              • -1

@Danstar: Go for it. Make sure to hold it the right way so you have signal and hopefully it hasn't bent after sitting on it. The load on it may have been too great.

        • In the end it's choice. There is no better or worse. It's entirely dependent on what the user likes better.

Like the headphone jack. Apple removed it…Samsung made ads poking fun at Apple for doing it….
          Oh wait….

    • Cause i dont really like my choices.

Pixels suck, Galaxies stutter (my wife has an s10, meh), LG and Sony are dead, Huawei is at war, Xiaomi is behind when it comes to flagships, etc

All im left with is Oneplus, that i have and im bored of

      • Tell us what you're bored with?

        • Software. Android is going downhill after kit Kat.

Oneplus saves it with nice customisation, but I have had three devices from them (1, 3t,6) and want something new

  • i would wait until they announce the new phones on sept 10 with the triple camera. they will release sept 20, around that time would be a good time to buy an older model.

  • -1

Just be careful if you're expecting a reliable device. Apple is having continual and significant QC issues

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.tomsguide.com/amp/us/ipad-b…

I know I will get flamed or have people talk about batteries that explode but at least Samsung accepted they had a problem instead of saying "you're using it wrong" or that a totally bent tablet is not a defect. Apples sheer arrogance is staggering.

Also Apple is rapidly becoming your parents phone… So many families you see mum and dad with an iPhone and kids with Android. I am sure someone will say they can't afford iPhones for the kids, trust me they can I have heard multiple arguments about "why don't you want an iPhone".

Multiple couples I know have had to return various iPhones for repair so when they came up to getting a new phone they weren't willing to take the chance (one was going on a trip and wasn't willing to risk it after returning an iPhone 10 twice in two weeks).

    • -1

Not sure what you’re getting at when you say iPhones are becoming “your parents phone” and kids are getting android…

I’ve had iPhone since the 3, most people in my family have iPhones and iPads and never known anyone needing to go get their device repaired.

I’ve gone twice, once my was own error by not googling an easy fix (cleaning the charger port)

    • Maybe because an iPhone costs a G and kids androids available even at 50 bucks?

      • Did you read what I wrote lol? Wow. Does this sentence ring a bell?

I am sure someone will say they can't afford iPhones for the kids, trust me they can

Just in case you have trouble with that the kids involved have brand new Samsung S10s, hardly a cheap phone.

Oh and now Apple does make hardware that catches fire LOL latest laptops banned in checked luggage.

Look I understand it's emotive for some people but Apples QC just isn't what it was.

        • -1

So many families you see mum and dad with an iPhone and kids with Android

I read that part. Which I find totally incorrect and something you'e just said off the cuff, and I'm not even sure what you're getting at with that comment?

Like I said, I can only go off my experiences and the people around me. Which is, the people I know who use iPhone never seem to have issues, the people who are using Samsung's almost always have some sort of issue whether it be hardware or software.

          • @Danstar: Hi Danstar - i was responding to Laziofogna not you.

There are six separate families i know where all the kids have android and all the parents have iOS.

Your response on Samsung sounds pretty out of date but like you said it's based on your experience.

  • If you're bored with Android you'll be suicidal with Ios
