It's regular price is $599. Your kidding right? TiVo is cheaper than that and it's widely regarded as one of the best PVR's on the market.

  • Just chatted to a Crazy Stu rep about this device…

The whole Freeview thing is a bit misleading, because apparently the 4000 is not actually a Freeview device, but can be turned into one by flashing it with 3700 firmware.

The downside to this is that if you want to revert to 4000 firmware, only Magic TV themselves can do this.

    Rep can you confirm this?

Also, no media playback on this device, and no networking, which to me says does not beat any previous deal at all really : (

Yes The 4000 uses the standard OTA guide

Are you saying that's a bad thing? MagicTv is one of the only PVR's on the market with MHEG5 Freeview option. Given the fact Freeview badged PVR's are highly regarded worldwide and offer 'series linking' via over the air EPG ie. no need for internet connection, subscription etc. I can't understand why you see this as a downside.

I would suggest to you that networking is rarely used by the masses on such devices and it's shortsighted to assume that "everyone" requires such media/streaming functionality.

      • But in order to access the Freeview features, you have to flash it with 3700 firmware right?

This would then disable ad skip, and you would no longer be able to remove recordings?

…and from my understanding, if you want to revert to 4000 firmware, you have to send it back to Magic TV?

OK maybe networking is not used widely, but media playback via USB is becoming mainstream.

For me personally, if I can get a Beyonwiz DP Lite for $275 (500 GB), that uses the OTA guide (or IceTV), can playback media via USB or over the network, and can take recordings off of it, then I would go for that ; )

  • Actually, the picture you have there is the 3700?

    …not the 4000?

The box is the same, the units are the same, the firmware is not. I agree - it is confusing. I feel the same way - thats how the MTV4000PVR comes from MAGICTV. ie thats what we got when we ordered the MTV4000PVR.
