Can be turned into a pretty solid and easy riding commuter bike by swapping the tyres to thinner width (road type). I got a pair of puncture resistant 40c 700c schawlbe tyres from wiggle on clearance for about $35 and fit them to last years model and it flys now. If you want off-road use then you either need to swap back (bit of a pain to do regularly) or have a spare set of rims ..

  • Christ, check out those welds on the bike. Must weigh heaps

    • 15kg according to the review. Not sure if that's M or L.

  • +2

    no mudguards. :(

  • +2

I’d grab one of these if I was starting out MTB riding as it’s very good value for money.
I grabbed the 2016 model and although I’ve now upgraded, it lasted 2 years of being flogged all over Canberra’s MTB trails.
Yes it will be on the heavy side but your not going to notice this if your just starting out.

  • What wheels and tyres have previous versions come with?

Wheels look unbranded from the pics on the review.

    • +1

On the 2018 one, wheels aren't branded so I've got no clue about them, tyres are made by Deli (29x2.25)

  • +1

Deore 1x10 drive set & clutch D all seems good value for the $399

  • +2

$100 for a carbon disc fork
$40 for a big chain ring
    $100 for slick tires
    $60 for spd pedals
And you have a great commuting bike

    • Curious about this, is there a site you'd recommended to build or buy one ready made?

    • +1

If you want to spend $600 on a commuter bike just go for something like this: https://www.bicyclesonline.com.au/polygon-path-3-29er-city-b…. Unless you're really set on the chunkier tyres, might as well get a ready made package with a bigger gear range and much less weight overall.

      • Since you guys seem to know your bikes, would you recommend this (from a value perspective), over a Used Bike?
I'm looking to get into MTB'ing again (haven't done it for 10 years), and I don't mind going Second Hand.
Are there any "better deals" than this one, say on gumtree?

        https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-men-s-bicycles/qld/mountain+bik…

        Cheers, for any help!

        • +3

This bike will be better value than a used bike imo.

        • +3

Yeah used mountain bikes are normally no good in the $300-$800 range

For some reason cheap hardtails are mispriced
i.e a 2k bike is worth around 1.2k after 1 year but people still ask for $500 on 2-3 year old $600 bikes

As a first bike the aldi ones are pretty good
I've got friends to buy a few second hand

(these are basically the same as an entry level giant, specialized and so on which are sold for a few hundred dollars more)

      • Looks like a good deal. Wonder how sticky the rubber is though.
Should require less expense and mods than the Aldi bike if you want a reasonable commuter.
Some people do commute on off road tires though. I suppose it will still keep you fit.

    • $40 for a big chain ring

What is the mounting standard for that?
      I guess you'd be wanting a 40T or bigger, replacing … 32T is it?

      • +1

Depends on how hilly your commute is.
if you have slicks and your commute is fairly flat then I'd go for a 44 to 46t ring.
        Else 40 - 42 perhaps.
You'd have to check what mounting standard the Alid bike uses (the number of bolts and the diameter between bolts).
Since there's no front derailer there should be less issues.
One extra issue is you might need a new chain ($30) if the current one isn't long enough for the bigger chain ring..

        • The cranks don't use the traditional 4 bolt system. It might be a direct mount chainring (who knows which standard it uses), or perhaps it's not even removable separate to the crank arm.

          • @CyberGenesys: It is not removable from the crank arm. Crank arm has also rotated on 45 degrees square hole. So if you are going to change one right crank arm, you'll definitely need to change left crank arm as well.
Chain length is just enough for 36-38T.

Can anyone suggest a good kit or parts list to upgrade it to electric?

    • +1

There are a large range of electric bike parts out there. You probably need to specify a price range or the type of motor you want (hub or mid drive) to get a good recommendation. Both types of motors have pros and cons. Because of the nice drive chain on this bike it would probably benefit more from a mid drive but these tend to be more expensive.

      • Can you give good recommendations for a mid-drive? Perhaps the best mid-range or value-for-money experience?

        • Depends if you want a road legal ebike or not. Limit in Australia is 250w 25km/hr pedal assisted only. That being said I have a Bafang BBS02 on my mountain bike which has been great for commuting longer distances on a dedicated bike trail. As long as you are responsible you are unlikely to get pulled over.

          https://pirez.com.au/conversion-kits/mid-drive-kits/

Pirez is based in Melbourne and have a good range of Bafang mid drives and batteries to suit. You could probably find cheaper prices on Aliexpress so it is a tradeoff between local warranty and support vs a cheaper price.

          • +1

@pevo01: Noting that you need to roughly double these prices to get a battery too.

    • Electric for what purpose? Climbing hill trails so you can race down?
Or as an on-road commuter bike?

For road, a geared front-wheel hub motor is easiest. Also allows you to easily swap wheels and go non-electric.
Off-road climbing you'd want a back wheel hub motor.
For all-round flexibility and damn-the-expense, mid-drive is best.

    • BBS02 48V-750W or better BBSHD and Li-Po battery with fast charging

  • Noob questions here, but how does this one compare for $299? Not after a mountain bike, will have more road use.
    https://www.anacondastores.com/cycling/bikes/urban-bikes/flu…

    • This one is a road bike, dangerous yet possible (if you dare) go to a trail ride. The aldi is mountain bike suppose to be heavier then the road bike.

      • Yeah I know the difference between a mountain bike and a commuter, I was more referring to the quality of the parts. Gears, brakes etc.

    • Dont buy a bike for under about $500 (Aldi not included). $500 will get you an entry level half decent hybrid commuter bike. Avanti make a nice one that I've ridden a lot that I would recommend, about $450 if memory serves.

Not only is the quality much higher than sub $300 bikes, but it will be put together by an actual bike mechanic and will feel much better. With shops that aren't bike shops, it'll be built by you (crappily) or by an employee at that non bike shop (also crappily) and will feel awful. Don't do it.

    • +1

From experience, I suggest adding a little bit more and get the Aldi bike. You might save now with $299, but not in the long run.

    • Anaconda bike you link to is considerably inferior in spec to the Aldi bike. Anaconda - lots of steel (in this case read heavier) bits, much lower spec drivetrain, V brakes rather than hydraulic discs, likely to be heavier overall.
Far better value in the Aldi bike than the $100 difference.

  • noob question but new to Aus , can i get this directly from any Aldi store ? or do i need to pre order online and pick up ? (im located in CBD)

    • -7

You actually need to buy $400 worth of iTunes gift cards and send them to aldi's head office in Germany, then it will be sent to you via a Weiner kebab van

    • +2

The first option. But don't leave it too long because they are likely go quickly.

    • You may have to line up the morning they make it available if you really want it as stores bring in limited stock and you may have competition being in a CBD somewhere. All depends how popular that store and item are.

    https://www.ambmag.com.au/gallery/we-test-the-aldi-premium-2…

Some more info on the bike. I haven't read the article, nor do I care, just came up on my news feed before jumping on ozbargain (I did check whether it was a comparison of the same bike). Thought some of y'all might be interested.

  • +1

Looks like i will be getting my 3rd bike!

  • +1

3rd bike for me too. Black - check, Good components - check. Great price - check.

Looks like I'll be lining up at Aldi early that Saturday.

    • +2

Last year my local Aldi in Brisbane still had plenty of premium mountain bikes left quite a few days after the initial release.

I have a feeling they're better value this time around even if they cost $50 more, so may sell out faster.

  • Has anyone got any experience putting in an electric motor in one of these? i got the 29er from 2 years ago and hardly touch it. am thinking of putting in an electric motor …

  • How would the 399 bike compare to Reid mountain bikes? Their cheapest is 240 right now, but I'm also considering the 360 and 430 dollar bikes (as a lowly student, i can get 10% off).
I would be using the mountain bike on intermediate trails on a monthly basis, with occasional grocery hauling trips. $400 is really quite exy for me though, especially since i cannot store it indoors/ under cover - will rust easily :(

I got a reid flat bar roadie 250ish on discount 2 years ago and it does the job commuting 6km round trip 3 days a week, but i have nothing to compare it to, except my friend's clunky af kmart 'vintage' bike

What should i get guys? is aldi worth the extra$$ ?

I'm not racing or anything, and don't expect the bike to last more than 6 years (i can do basic maintenance with help from youtube, but bike shop tune ups are so expensive I would probs just get a new bike). It also helps that a 'cheap' bike wont get stolen.

edit: lols totally forgot about 99bikes, another relatively affordable alternative.

    • Maybe do some more research and list the bikes you want to compare.. you're a student so you'll have time :)

Things to compare are the brakes, and gearing. Deore 1x10 and Hydraulic brakes set this apart from the regular cheapies. Google search bikes with those components and see what's comparable. You'd normally be looking at bikes closer to the $1000 range.

  • How does this Aldi one compare to this one I've gone my eye on from Anaconda? I have no idea about bikes :)

    https://www.anacondastores.com/cycling/bikes/fluid-nitro-men…

    • +2

27.5 wheel size vs Aldi 29er… Aldi wins
Tourney vs Deore gearing… Aldi wins
Mechanical vs Hydraulic … Aldi wins
Front forks, hard to see details on Anaconda but v likely Aldi wins

      • Thanks mate :)

      • +1

Absolutely agree in general, but not sure that 29 vs 27.5" is a "win". I went from 26" to 29" and find the larger bike a little unwieldly as the centre of gravity is higher (particularly with chunky tyres) and the wheelbase is (slightly) longer - as a result I'm a little less confident on it. If I was in the market again, I'd consider a 27.5, but that's me. YMMV.

  • 2019 model only got matte black one or any other colour to choose ?

  • Unless I missed it I cant see mention of whether the frame is alloy?

Edit: I did miss it… but have now seen the pic in the catalog and it does mention alloy frame. :)

  • Anyone know if these have stainless spokes?

    • What else would they be made from?

      • Chrome plated carbon steel, or just regular steel I guess.

  • Any other bikes with the same specs to compare to?

      • Thanks, but I already checked there, and found nothing with similar specs even close to the Aldi price. Was wondering if there was any other search site, or whether anyone else had found a better deal.

        • +3

          Seriously?

        • What about the giant atx 3?

    • +1

Plenty. But they'll cost more than $399.

  • I’m going to jump on this. Just not sure what size to get.
    I’m 174cm. Any suggestions?

    • AMB review suggests the L frame for people >170cm.

    • i got the medium and i'm 177 cm.

  • +1

I bought this bike this time last year, and it's been a lot of fun and introduced me to mtb (I'm a roadie). this is my third bike.

I've put SPD pedals on it and that's about the only modification I made. I did the brisbane valley rail trail, up and down mt coot tha and around the bushes in the western suburbs. also the little bmx track in yeronga next to the corso.

my only "complaint" is that it's a bit heavier compared to other aluminium hardtails but you can't ask for more for an entry-level bike. highly recommended if you are unsure about mtb but want to give it a try. i'm 177 cm and i bought the medium frame.

    Some pics: https://imgur.com/a/TUccwiV

it comes with a bell (and whistles). this year there's only black but last year they offered them in blue or red.

if you want to save money you can wait a few weeks after the special — usually in some stores where there is still stock they will reduce it down to about $250-300. (if you've got the legacy coles mastercard with price protection even better). You could also get one-off gumtree. i saw a few listings last year a few weeks after the special. edit: last year's price was $350.

    • Note that the brakes and gearing are greatly improved over the 2018 model so there is value in the additional $50. Plus it's black so looks cooler :)

      • Yeah true although I find last year’s brakes okay. I think the tyres could be better but they can be changed once they’re worn out. Also black bikes are too mainstream - everyone has black bikes…

    • How long after do they reduce the price down? Days, weeks or months? Just wondering as I rarely get into Aldi on a regular basis.

Also how did you go with the medium size with your height? I saw the article previously mentioned recommended Large size for 170cm+. Also the Polygon website suggests that too?

      • +1

Things can usually reduce after 14-21 days depending on what it is and volume.

      • +1

If you check last year’s bargains you should see that maybe after 2 weeks

    • Hmm yeah I'm also a roadie but I've been eyeing the brisbane valley rail trail, as well as the hidden vale adventure park. Guess I've got a couple of days to decide. Dunno if the wife will be impressed though.

      • Hahaha good luck! I don’t have the s-1 condition. If you ride it once a week I think it should be fine. The valley trail is a must do!

  • +1

Anybody got any experience with the bike stand?

    • +1

      Also interested

      • Bought one, pretty standard, I recommend screwing it to the wall though (stud! Not plaster). Fit the new MTB today and my son's smaller bike. Does the job.

  • Can anyone who knows bikes clarify for me why I wouldn't get the mtb?

18 odd years ago I had an Avanti Barracuda which did me well but it was stolen a couple of years back (with kids etc, I'm so unfit I didn't even know it was gone!).

Looking to get back into it a bit now but don't really have the cash to invest - the Barracuda cost ~$1000+ and from what I can tell this bike has everything going for it that current ~$1000 bikes have… What am I missing?

    https://www.bikeexchange.com.au/blog/best-hardtail-mountain-…

The XCM forks are pretty consistent in this range (you might get remote lockout work more $).
Hydraulic disk brakes are consistent (you might get equally lower level Shimano for the extra $)
The 1x10 Deore drive train appears better than most (if, as I've read, that more high end bikes are running the 1x10 and some more $ ones aren't even running Deore)
The frame is Hydroformed 6061 Alutech aluminium from Polygon (don't know anything about this or others - maybe weight ?)

I suspect the wheel set/tyres may not be amazing but will probably do for a while.

I even called bicycles online (who organised the deal) to ask for specs and see how it compares to their bike lineup - the guy basically said it's amazing value, has pretty standard cranks, rims, tyres etc and stacks up somewhere between their $750-$850 bikes (and they are better value than most shops).

Next best option I could find was:
    https://www.bikes.com.au/2018-focus-whistler-evo-27-5-29/

Other than buying a box from a supermarket, what should I be wary of or what should I consider spending an extra few $ on? Other thoughts?

    • +1

      You are over-thinking this.

If you are serious about getting back in the saddle, just go and buy this absolute bargain.

If you want to upgrade in 12 months, you would probably lose very little in selling it.

      • Agree with this comment x1000000

It's a $400 bike. Not sure what planet people are living on but unless you want to buy 2nd hand this is the mountain bike for a person on a budget. Can't believe people will risk missing out just to save $50 if it's happens to go on special in a months time.

  • Anyone know if this bike is set up for 700c commuter tyres and if they are tubeless or not?

    • +1

700c and 29 rims have the same circumference, so as long as the commuter tyres you have in mind are wider than the rim on this bike they should be compatible. Highly unlikely that these rims will be tubeless ready but you might be able to convert them.

      • How difficult is it to convert rims to tubeless if they aren't already tubeless-ready?

  • +2

Pretty keen to buy this bike. I’m a bit confused by the sizing. The above review suggests getting an L if over 170cm. Polygon and bikes online suggest large is 180 plus which is a significant difference.

    • Also curious. Polygon bike sizing shows L as 175cm+. While BOA sizing shows 180+. Also states if ypur wing span is less than your height, go one size smaller. I am bike curious and have no experience. My understanding is the size difference is with the distance of the seat to the handle bar. Sounds right?

      • Yeah unfortunately I'm somewhere between 169 - 172cm high (i.e. short) so I'm thinking the medium will be better for me!

  • My question for people that bought the earlier models… how big is the box? Will it fit into the back of a sedan? Or you have to pull it out of the box to fit it into the car?

    • There are video's showing how its packed, just not on the Aldi site

    • It’s big. You’d struggle in a sedan.

    • Its 149Lx82Hx23W cm. Fit in the back of my getz with the seats folded forward.

  • +1

    Happy hunting everyone!

  • Which Aldi in the Eastern Suburbs (Sydney) is the largest/stock the most usually?

  • Only 1 of each size in my local. Scored one large

    • Same here. Missed out unfortunately

    • Any sizing advice on the box? I’m 174.5 cm?

      • The box says 170cm-180cm for medium and 180cm-190cm for the large.

  • 50 people and 6 bikes - some sad dudes in the car park at my local.

  • only 2 from my area,170 to 180 is medium

  • Sold out at my local as well. If you haven’t picked one up first thing forget it.

  • Looking for a large in Brisbane if there’s stock anywhere? One medium left at mount ommaney at 8:40 this morning

  • And those waiting for the price to drop.wow

    • There will be customer return, they want to get rid of. Wait a month or so.
