Original Coupon Deal

I've been keeping my eye on these for a short while. Unfortunately it's not as good as some previous deals, but isn't bad for right now.

  • can i ask why you're keeping an eye on these?

    • They are good

  • +8

Because I got nothing better to do.

  • +1

The good feeling of having a Nest branded smoke detector that test itself vs the good feeling of spending $35 for one at Bunnings instead. It's a struggle I'm deal with. $143 still doesn't push me over.

A benefit for these is that they are interconnected and will help with meeting QLD legislation. A bit more expensive than other similar products however this one does not need a bridge and has features such as self testing and mobile notification.

      QLD Legislation:
To comply with legislation, interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms are required:
From 1 January 2017: in all new dwellings and substantially renovated dwellings (this applies to building applications submitted from 1 January 2017).
From 1 January 2022: in all domestic dwellings leased and sold.
From 1 January 2027: in all other domestic dwellings.

The battery ones don't comply, and the 240v one technically are not compliant either as the power cord is not double insulated.

      • +1

Worth noting for anyone looking that the nest wireless ones are definitely not compliant as they require a sealed 10 year battery) and I'm not sure the wired ones are either (they need the backup to last a year as they're not rechargeable and they don't specify, they 'could' be ok, but I'd want to check before decking out a house given they all have to interconnect.)

  • I purchased 4 during the last 20% off eBay deal. Unfortunately the Smoke Alarms ranged between 5-14 months into their manufacturers use by date (10 years).

  • Any benefit to this vs regular smoke alarm?

    • +5

      That I can think of:

      • It's got smarts so can notify you if they're going off which may be handy if you are away. Might not help you save the house, but at least you can make calls.
      • Can dismiss the alarm via the app which saves dragging a chair or finding something long enough to reach the alarm when you've burnt some toast
      • Can link up with home automation and it serves as a good presence detector which can feed into other automations (it factors into our home/away status which in turn automates turning on and docking a robot vacuum). Some of this may change later this year but as Google consolidates it's Nest line
      • Self tests and reports issues
      • Acts as a night light which we find incredibly useful. If you walk under it and the lights are off it'll let off a subtle glow which is enough to navigate an area in the dark

The night light features probably my favourite thing TBH.

        Expensive nightlight

I’ve got one of these and the wife and I both reckon it’s worth it the price.
I know it won’t be for everyone but we had a smoke alarm that would go off at the drop of a hat waking up our new born every time. We went with it just because you could silence the alarm when it went off. Had no idea that it measured more than smoke and also had a motion sensor in it so it can be used as a night light.
For us it’s worth the price and don’t regret the price at all.
    But that’s just my 2c.

    • Agree. Have had x2 for 18 months, and they're great. App alerting and history/management, CO2 alerting, night lights, linked sirens, pre-announcement prior to siren, etc.

  • I had one at my old house. Worked well. I had and currently have a nest thermostat. It was good as it did co2 as well. Pricey compared to xiaomi/Honeywell but also does more.

  • Darn, nice features (night passage light, CO2 monitoring, remote monitoring, hushing from smartphone). Just had some interconnected ones installed, so can't justify it for a few more years. Although, the Nest ones could be handy in other parts of the house…

Thanks for making us aware of this one =>

I have 5 of these and work perfect. Can tell me when missus is nearly finished cooking in all rooms

  • I’m also a fan of them!

Another interesting this you can do, if the smoke alarm goes off, you can get it to flash your lifx lights.

So I’m my place, if the smoke alarm goes off, my lights will flash red.

It also links with a skybell doorbell to change the button to a red color (albeit this is prob a useless feature - but it’s two good devices that link together)

    • I bought several Nest detectors just for this type of integration with third party lights, doors locks, the aircons etc. Within a month of installing them Google in true form is killing the third party integrations. So definitely not a fan, and regret buying them or trusting Google with anything relating to my smart home.

  • Price must have gone up… The last time I bought some of these on eBay from TGG the base price was $148 each. After 20% was applied it came to $122.11 per unit. Maybe there was a special applied on top of the eBay 20% off?

    eBay Purchase

That was in June so not long ago.

    • $148 was the sale price. They are usually $189.

  • are these compliant with NSW codes and regs - I've got two standard smoked alarms which are interconnected already. I'm sick of the standard ones going off over cooking in the kitchen and the app turn off would be so handy to have.
