  • Grabbed two thanks - now I need to update the old 2 bay Synology …. do I get the DS918+ now, which is getting a bit long in the tooth, or wait for the DS920+ ?

Jesus christ, why? At what point do you go from 'these are pretty certainly fine' to 'im actually wearing out my drives'?

      • That's one way to kill it… Unbelievable

    • +1

I can't recall exactly how long mine took - but I did 3 drives on a USB 3 to my PC and it was 14-16 hours each.

  • +6

Office works price matched… but they won't include the shipping free under prime as it is a members only thing… so they added $18 to the price, then matched. Brings it to $267. So I walked out and bought on Amazon.

    • -8

enjoy waiting for the drive when you could have had it there and then.

      • +4

Yeah but he saved $4.50. This is ozbargains……

      • Nope - they don't carry the 10TB - it had to be ordered in click and collect to the store. Plus, $5 towards another deal on OzB

    • Well done. Amazon failed to deliver mine and refunded last time. I'm tempted to do this.

  • +1

I bought two of these from ozb posts. Both arrived with one sheet of plastic-air padding only on the top of the WD box. Both Amazon boxes were thrown down onto our concrete step by the couriers, captured on surveillance camera. Same thing happened when our TV was delivered. Lazy delivery guys and Amazon no better.

    • +1

At least the drives are in a case with rubber mounts and the boxes have a decent plastic buffer as well. Off I think they'll survive that no worries, should give them a quick scan anyway.

My fun story is when Fastway decided to leave my last delivery on the footpath rather than walking up the driveway and knocking. Had to go hunting for the package when I got the delivery confirmation as it wasn't even line of sight from the front door, was luckily home or it would have vanished in such a busy area!

    • Although not ideal, in this case they'd probably be okay because of the inner box. As far as I know, unused drives have all the moving parts 'locked' so they fare much better in rough handling compared to a used drive that gets shipped.

However, I wouldn't order bare 3.5" HDDs from Amazon after seeing the way those are packed.

    • Mine turned up today with no packaging just a address label stuck to the box, should I be concerned? https://imgur.com/2FetsQR

  • I recently bought an 8TB for $222 it is a good drive all though i did consider returning it due to how hot it runs, mid 50's°
But i decided to cool it down with a fan now high 30's°

I also have an 8TB MyBook which i shucked with no such issues

  • Seems a good price for this item.
Do these type of HDD ( >8TB powered/external HDD) , do they tend to run faster than the 4TB portable USBonly-powered hard drives ?
Maybe the extra power supply adds speed ??
There is 4tb external 'portable' HDD (USB power only) on sale at office works for $125 . Similar price per TB , so if they both run similar speed, and if this is a general trend re USB vs powered HDD , then I would prefer not having to plug into power point, it is just an extra inconvenience.
If it is going to run twice as fast or something having a 10tb like this plugged into power, than I would buy something like this. Otherwise, 2 or 3 of the 4TB USB powered ones would be best suited (most Tv's, laptops, anything, usually has 2 or more USB slots these days, so can easily plug in 2 x 4tb of the portable HDD instead of this powered one.

I have both and the 8TB Elements is faster than the 4TB backup plus by a fair margin.

Thanks for the info. Do you only notice the slower speed of 4tb portable when copying large files, and when on laptop..
I rarely use my laptop. My HDD are usually just connected to Android smart TV, Xbox one, ps4 pro. So just wondering if you might have used on consoles or directly into tv and if the speed is noticeable there.
It is a little annoying when I plug my 4tb USB powered HDD into the Sony Android TV, and the files take 30 seconds plus to load the list of files or folders to come up. I'm not sure whether it is my tv that is slowing things or if the hard drive speed is slowing me down. It has gotten incredibly annoying at times, attempting to navigate in and out of files trying to find something to watch, then I will click "back" to see list of files again, 30 seconds load times 🤣 . You can't casually browse for something to watch straight away like that . Well you can, if you're very patient lol.

My use is different to yours.
4TB portable has been used as my download drive(by the way has just been returned to Seagate under warranty) and the 8TB Elements is used for my Emby library.
Copy speed can vary so much from one file to the other. The bigger drives read and write up to 160MB/s over the network is a constant 113MB/s, the smaller drive <100MB/s sometimes <30MB/s

The shucked 8TB MyBook drive is used for part of my archive

          • @marko62: Could be a faster drive too, often portables are lower rpm for power usage. But fast and slow exist in both… Maybe a lesser interface too.

        • +1

I don't think you'll notice much speed difference on either drives as the problem is more related to Sony's Android TV. The read/write performance with this 10TB drive is definitely quicker than your 4TB due to the nature of PMR/SMR technology used, however that's not going help much with your use cases.

          • @monkp: Thanks very much for the details.
So it's the Sony Android Tv lacking in power/speed that is slowing things down to a crawl . Thanks

  • Is there any way to stop these powering down when not in use?

    • +1

Friend, im not aware of any proper solution but you could write a small script that opens a file on the hdd a few minutes before it would usully power down and make it add a single letter then save it.

    I just bought 2 of these. I don't have Prime. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G3QMPB5

It worked out as $373 AUD delivered, including GST and shipping. So that's 186.50 per drive. I can't work out their math (since it's supposed to be $263 each), but I'm not going to argue.

    • +2

It shows up as US$373 (AU$574) to me at checkout. 😂

      • same here. AU$574

    • Got a screenshot? I can't get that deal.

    • That's the US site - the price is in USD - $373 USD.

    • Ouch, that $50aud shipping could have been put towards a years prime membership. Then u would have been set for the next amazon purchase. I wonder if u can cancel your order and do it that way instead?

  • Price increased to $263.24?

    • +1

Guess the AUD has fallen a bit

  • Hard for me to get excited about these when I've found them new secondhand for around 150-180 with paperwork (which you don't even need, as you can register the drives online with WD or seagate).

  • Dam it i snoozed and was going to order this tonight guess ill wait for the next sale :(
