Parked My Car into The Back of Neighbours Car

Hello everyone, first time post and really need advice to approach a situation.
Basically what I've said in the title but accidentally parked too close to my neighbours car, it wasnt a crash more like touching. There was no damage except for some dirt removed. they're asking for insurance details but I'm not covered by insurance.
I've talked to them about it, with no damage and photos taken.
What will happen next and what should I do next? thanks again everyone

      • yup long time lurker, lacking street smarts

        • +22

Serious question, not even a little bit joking - how can you be a long time lurker and not have seen the dozens of horror stories of people who drive without at least 3rd party insurance?

        • Youll get schooled at OzB

Paint diagram please Mr crashy pants.

    What will happen next…

Pay whatever the other party wants or lawyer up.

…and what should I do next?

    Get insurance.

    • +2

      100% correct.

      • +2

It's the best kind of correct.

        • except 110% correct.

          • @funnysht: In and of itself, 110% is erroneous.

"Parked My Car into The Back of Neighbours Car"

I think you meant to say 'crashed'….

    • -1

      No… "parked".

  • +6

    Get a smaller car.

    …and insurance.

      And a reverse camera

Parked My Car into The Back of Neighbours Car

Are you suggesting this was a rear-end-to-rear-end collision?

Maybe rub some of that Voltaren and see if it buffs out?

    Where are pics?

    • havent figured out how to post pics yet but there are no visible scratches or dents

Then They don't have a leg to stand on. Ignore them. They're sh*t neighbours.

Get insurance. At least 3rd party…

Ps keep pictures. Do not delete…ever

Nah, OP is trying to weasel out of his/her responsibilities

    like touching.

    How did they know?

    • they came out and saw I was parked right up behind them and because we're neighbours they know it's my car

      • Are you sure you did it? Could it possibly be someone else like from a shopping centre car parking?

        • it was in a suburban street and there are no damages on the car from where it touched

      • +6

This sounds fishy. Neighbour comes out after you crashed into his car for no reason? I think there's more to the story than you're telling us.

  • +2

If there was no damage one would assume it was a incredibly low speed crash, so I don't know why they'd want insurance details?

Either OP isn't telling us something or the neighbour is a scammer.

    • I felt their response was really unreasonable as there was no damage and gave them an apology

    • +9

Just because you dont see any damage to the bumper does not mean that there isnt any underneath

      • +2

This is correct, but considering the contact would have been at such a slow speed (remembering no damage to surface), I’d argue the chance of unseen damage would be nil.

      • Of course, panel beaters have a sixth sense when it comes to finding damage.

        • +5

          Sniffing money*

      • Nope. Much more than a gentle nudge with a soft item (like your knee) will crack the paint. Why do you think car sales people demonstrate damage resistance with their knee and not another car (they have enough cars on the yard…).

    • +11

Ah. The ol' park on your driveway and wait for someone to back into it just enough so there isn't damage but you can claim compensation scam.

      They've got you now.

  • +2

but I'm not covered by insurance.

There may be damage you can't see. Wait for them pursue you if they want to - they can take up to 6 years to do this in most states

If you don't agree with what they are claiming, you can raise a dispute

If I was the neighbour I would not even need to ask for OP's insurance.

I would simply approach my own insurance with your personal details and they will sort it out with OP with or without OP's insurance.

    • +1

Neighbour probably doesn't have insurance either.

  • +3

They need to prove you damaged their car. If what you say is true and there is no damage, then they're just wasting their money.

  • +4

    "what should I do next"

    Learn to drive properly!

  • +3

OP, get a tow bar and next time if you hit other car, it will be very visible and 100% no doubt that you hit the car.

And then you don't have to hassles yourself posting on OzB and wondering what would be the answers to your prob, you just straight pays up for the damage to the other party. Too easy.

    • How is a tow bar going to help the next time OP rear-ends someone?

      • +3

Because he can tow himself to car school and learn how to drive.

  • +1

I would be taking photos right now, if only to show there is no visible damage. You want to avoid damage being caused later on being attributed to you. In order to claim anything from you, they must have suffered 'a loss'. If there is no damage, then there is nothing for them to claim.

  • Is there an obligation to tell someone your insurance details?
Why do they want to know?
    Name, address, rego.
Do they have these 3 things?

  • +1

If there’s no damage noticeable just ignore n let them go to court to claim

    • -1

they could…they could be internal damage like sensors etc, lucky the airbag didn't go off

  • +1

    This guys trolling.

    Don’t see any pics.

As if he doesn’t know how to upload pics. It’s not hard.

    • since no damage why upload pics i guess…

      • At least an mspaint diagram

Parked My Car into The Back of Neighbours Car

Aka a kiss. You should both move on

    • It could be a bit awkward when you bring your new girlfriend home next time though.

    • Yeap, there's a reason they are called "bumper" bars.

  • +22

    Gather round, Gather true,
I have a little conundrum for you.
There I was parking my car,
    happened so quick, somewhat bizarre,
I'm no fool, I give you assurance,
The very thought I'd never need insurance,
Now I sit here bewildered and perplexed,
Unsure of what I should say or do next,
    I know, I know, I feel like a tool,
How can I forget the one golden rule,
Would Ozbargin give more or a damn,
if i upload the obligatory MS paint diagram?

  • +1

but I'm not covered by insurance

    Oh boy.

  • +9

There was no damage except for some dirt removed.

    what should I do next?

Bill them for your car cleaning services.

  • Take some soil from the garden and put it around their bumper.

and take it as a lesson and luck that you didn't hit a more expensive car and get some 3rd party insurance/

OP out of curiosity you do say you're a long time lurker…what's your reason to not get 3rd party insurance?

  • -1

"Parked my car into back of neighbours car"
So correct me if I'm wrong.
You were driving a little tikes and parked it in the boot of your neighbours car without permission?

How did you get so big, and why aren't you in preschool

  • If there's no damage and you have pictures of the 'no damage', there's nothing they can do.

  • This has happened to me before, but I was hit hard. No damage to my car, no worries, moved on. I've done it to someone, very low speed (parallel park), no damage also, no problem. OP if it's as you say, tell them very clearly there's no damage whatsoever, what are they complaining about?

  • +1

From what you said there is no damage. There is no reason to pay.

Have you even hit your car with a car door? did you notice how some paint is transferred between the two cars. From what you said there was no collision.

If you want to humor them (DON'T) ask for three written quotes from different repair shops. Confirm the damage with the repair shops. None of the quotes will match as there is no damage.

There is no damage under the bumper bar. The bumper bar is part of the crumple zone. It bends a little bit at very low speeds, however the paint will crack with anything less then a minor deflection (like from a knee). If you have not damaged either car's paint, there is definitely no damage under the bumper bar caused by you. Further, you can still push start most modern manual cars without damaging the bumper or crash structure. You would need to break paint at the very least to risk damaging anything under the bumper.

A parking sensor should not be damaged by a very low speed impact. They need to withstand loose rocks at freeway speeds. They are basically freestanding, held only by a grommet in the bumper. A radar system should not be damaged as they are located in the non deform-able grill in most cars. Damage to the radar would mean visible damage to the front of the car (unless it was damaged by a rock…).

  • Lol at people suggesting there’s internal damage, sensors damaged etc. if there’s no visible damage, not even a scratch on the outside, there’s no internal damage. Sounds like OP tapped the car at a km/h or 2 - I wouldn’t be giving them anything.

    Still, get insurance.

    1. Buy insurance. At the very least 3PP jeez
    2. Ask them to take it up with their insurance, and pay whatever the letter of demand says
  • Get them to get a quote from a repair shop, if damage is minimal then???
Offer to cover damages if any, or at least a buff and polish job if surface scratches…

If you left any damage or scratches then you have to cover that. Up to the other party wether they pursue it if they believe their is damage.

If they are asking for insurance details and the cost of repair would be less than excess, then something is fishy. What type of car do they own? get photos of the car and location of where it was touching.

  • What sort of neigbours are these?
    No damage EQUALS no claim

Give thier car a wash and tell them its fixed

  • Have you had opportunity to inspect the damage under different lighting conditions or since the initial crash (noting they're your neighour)?

I haven't read through all the posts (yet), but and for example, I was hit once from behind while waiting at a red light - it was afternoon getting dark. The driver made out that it was low speed and that my bumper looked fine - I still insisted on exchanging details. Lucky I did because the next day under bright daylight, I could see that the entire bumper had spider webbing cracks.

If you see damage on next inspection, it may give you context of what will happen next. If no damage, then just wait for their move. You don't need to provide insurance details (not that you have any!!) and if they pursue things with their insurance, their insurance company will come knocking on your door.
