    what is better 4 x 8 gb or 2 x 16gb?

    • Less sticks is generally better, especially for Ryzen.

    • +3

less sticks means there is 2 spare slots for future upgrades

      • +1

And that's why you are taking over the world… tomorrow… again…

    • 2x16. Both configurations will perform the same with this ram work ryzen though, same ranking as such. No benefit of running 4 other than maybe visual appeal

    • +1

Depends on your motherboard and CPU. If you're running a motherboard with t-topology, 4 sticks of single rank are probably better. Or if you're running X299 or something and have quad channel memory controller.

Depends on the RAM, CPU and the motherboard.

Assuming Ryzen 3xxx CPU, it depends on whether the RAM is single sided or double sided. Generally 2 modules are better for AMD Ryzen CPUs - if you want tight timings and overclock. 2x16 (double sided RAM modules) vs 4x8 (single sided) is likely to result in somewhat similar result.

If you have no intention to overclock the RAM, then at DDR4-3000 and assuming you are okay with 2T being the command rate, you will most likely not have any issue either way with a Ryzen 3xxx CPU.

If you do intend to overclock, honestly, Ryzen 3xxx series still have issues to sort out. The AGESA update (still not quite there, and most M/B BIOSes lagging behind) and PBO is still broken. But, if memory overclock is very important to you, 2x8 is the best option to get the best speed/timings.

    • i have 4x8gb 3000mhz gskill RGB trident works fine on 3700X B450 board.. but wont overclock or allow me to change timings at all.. 3000Mhz CL16 auto everything XMP settings are the only thing that will boot and is rock solid.

Had the same experience with Kingston HyperX Predator DDR4-3200 (4x8GB). Works fine using XMP, but manual settings pretty much no go. MSI B450 board (I found RAM settings at times won't stick when set manually). Had to return 1 set (2 DIMMs) due to them failing memtest.

Bought Micon Rev E based DIMMs (DDR4-3000) and found those can overclock a bit (DDR4-3466 without bumping up voltage), but command rate must be set to 2T for 4 DIMMs. Some people reported getting them to work at DDR4-3600 (2 DIMMs only, but I think with voltage set to 1.4V).

      $113.46 Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2933MHz CL17 - Black (Intel XMP, AMD Ryzen)

Oh no stay away from that. For about $10 more you can get Corsair Vengeance LPX 16gb kit on amazon which in comparison is better value.

  • This or G.Skill RGB 3600Mhz CL16?

    • +4

G Skill can be had at this price? Where?

  • +1
  • How does this compare to the G.Skill Ripjaws: https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/g.skill-ripjaws-v-16g…? Higher speed (3200) but higher latency (CL16) for $11.68 less. I would have thought the higher speed is slightly more important. Does the Corsair RGB cost more because of the pretty lights?

    • +1

Just buy the cheaper one if you don't care about RGB

    • +1

Its basically the same, 3200 CL16 is a hair faster in most scenarios than 3000 CL15 (technically it works out to be the same latency) but if you're asking the question then you're not going to notice the difference at all.

This costs more than the cheap stuff because its RGB but I believe its also using better memory chips and you're likely to get a better result overclocking / better compatibility with higher chance of the XMP working out of the box.

  • This is a better deal, especially if eBay have another 10-15% off.

May not be rbg, but still nice.

  • If you really want CL16 3200mhz, same kit is $165.49 > https://www.amazon.com.au/CORSAIR-Vengeance-3200MHz-Desktop-…
