At least they are recalling them rather than saying that they are fine, and continuing to sell them, burning customers down the line.

    • +33

      Hello Volkswagen!

      • +2

They weren't burning customers yet. Just the environment, which will literally burn them a few generations later.

        • +1

          And a few monkeys

        • +2

          @cnut
VW are notorious for having major faults and denying they exist.

          Oil burning and melting pistons
DSG gearboxes that have failing clutches and valve bodies
timing chain tensioners that fail to tension
timing chains that wear after 50,000km
          failing wiring looms
plastic water pumps that leak or catastrophically fail
clutches in manual gearboxes that catastrophically fail and kill the whole gearbox
          etc, etc, etc

          • +1

@brad1-8tsi: I know. I was making a joke about their emissions coverup that is causing global warming.

    • +22

      Hello Ford!

        • My first rental was a Pinto because I had no credit card and that was all I could get. Great little zipper! Mum bought a Merc and would no longer accept rides in my Corolla. Too bad hers kept running away while mine never faulted. She spent more than it was worth on a roadworthy but it still kept on running away. Eventually I managed to fix it but she never got to see it.

      Привет Lada!

      • Does it come with a Vodka tap?

  • +72

Recalls happen in cars, news at 11.

https://www.productsafety.gov.au/products/transport/cars - every brand has piles of recalls all the time, Toyota aren't magical.

Any car manufacturer that doesn't have recalls is probably hiding something.

  • +73

if you pay more it must be the best

LOL. Since when does someone pay more to get a Toyota?

    — Geez, Tom, you've been putting in a lot of overtime recently.
    — Yeah, my wife wants a new car and insists on getting a Toyota. Only the best for her.

    • +1

It is true though, if you are comparing basic sedans and hatchbacks at the bottom of the line. Toyotas are at least $3k more expensive than all the others (was shopping for a car beginning of this year)

      • +1

        which ones?

obviously against Hyundai, Kia etc Toyota will cost more.

I think Toyota is the bang-for-buck vehicle make, and i think up against their like for like (Honda, Nissan) its the cheapest?

        • +1

Was comparing kia cerato vs Toyota corolla - kia had more features (including one I really wanted - apple carplay) and longer warranty for smaller price. The only thing in Toyota's favour was its reputation as a quality vehicle

        • "Obviously if you compare them to other manufacturers with similar products they're more expensive but I wouldn't say they're more expensive"

    • +1

      Since Toyota Hilux

    • Why is it always the wife that wants a new car?

      • +2

Because men are happy with Trusty Rusty, while the wife wants a nice car to drive the friends home after a dinner out.

        • +1

Same reason they want a diamond ring then

          • +1

@Jackson: What are you talking about, you can't drive your friends home with a diamond ring.

  • +21

I don't own a Toyota, but recall is kind of good thing, they find the issue and fix it promptly. Usually issue caused by the part suppliers. eg. Takata airbags.

  • +1

Lol. and what do you drive Annandale?

    • +1

      probably a corolla.

      • Naaah… annandale… probably a hybrid bicycle.

  • +18

Lol, one particular cheap manufacturer has initiated ZERO major recalls despite several of their models having issues (cough Great Wall). Would you prefer to buy one of their cars then?

At least Toyota are being upfront and honest about it.

    • +4

you mean that asbestos infested brand ?

      • Relax. Only the brake pads.

        • +2

Also the gaskets. But it's ok, it's only a little bit.

  • +5

Pretty sure every vehicle has had a recall at some point

  • Customers are still fooled by if you pay more it must be the best.

    'Pay more?' Toyota?

  • +2

I like Toyota. They are good automobiles

  • +2

Customers are still fooled by if you pay more it must be the best.

Never owned a toyota I'm guessing?

    • +1

Probably couldn't afford one. You know those terribly expensive Toyotas…

  • +1

    Looks at Ford and Volkswagen

    • +11

      Such solid gearboxes!

      • +10

It's not broken if it never worked in the first place ;)

      • And DPFs

        • +1

Dpfs are an issue industry wide.

  • +11

OP clearly wants the VW response. Deny, deny, deny that there's anything wrong with their gearbox. VAG China decides to recall, VAG Australia continues to deny that there's a fault with Australian delivered cars until public pressure mounts and then they finally issue a voluntary recall rather than the Toyota response of being proactive with their recalls.

People are legit fools if they corollate recalls with reliability lol.

  • +9

3 month old article, and the other from December last year, both of which have been previously discussed (both by the same author too interestingly…).

If you're looking at recalls over the last 12 months, why just pinpoint Toyota?

    • +23

Need to justify the investment in a Captiva.

    • +3

The date of the articles was the first thing I looked at before reading the article! Wonder if OP works for one of the other manufacturers :)

I work in the Industry dealing with most big manufacturers, and I can honestly say that Toyota are handling it the way they should! Unlike couple of other manufactuers that have been stated in the comments!

  • +7

this person must really hate Toyota lol

  • +4

If think Toyota reliability is reasonable. They are riding on the coat tails of yesteryear though. Newer products are much more complex and of course, that leads to more problems.

And of course, like many products of the modern era, they engineers are fighting wth the accountants and the marketing department to try and build the best vehicle with the most features at the lowest price. Not a good combo.

  • +3

My toyota has been recalled 3 times and its still the best car I've owned.

  • +10

Lol Toyota unreliable? Expensive? What planet are you on?

Have you ever heard of a Jeep?

      • .. Price of tea in China?

        • Jeep is not Toyota. Thought that was pretty clear, not to mention obvious.
If the topic was about Land Cruisers or their derivatives, Jeep would be relevant.

No survey will equate Chrysler-Jeep to Toyota in terms of quality or reliability.

If you meant Jeep are overpriced, unreliable carbage, then we're agreed.

          • -4

@Speckled Jim: How are Jeeps overpriced? The WK2 Grand Cherokee shares the same chassis with the last gen Mercedes GLE and GLS, had a better gearbox, better engines (more power/torque at least), has a low range and diff, better infotainment, and costs less in all specs. It’s a bargain for what it its.

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: Depends whose money is buying it. Not mine.

            • @[Deactivated]:

It’s a bargain for what it its.

If you don't expect much resale after the warranty expires

              • -1

@spackbace: That might be the case of other models, but the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler have pretty good resale. The Wrangler beats the avg depreciation curve and the Grand is right on it.

            • +5

@[Deactivated]: Make sure you highlight those things while the tow truck driver drags it on to the back of the flatbed.

          • @Speckled Jim: That's exactly what I meant. They're garbage, expensive and unreliable.

            • -3

@Levathian: Some are garbage. The Compass and the Cherokee are for sure. The Wrangler is best in class and the Grand Cherokee is a great car for the money. So yes, Jeep makes some absolute dogs of cars, but they also make some good ones. It's just that in Australia, they're all painted with the same brush.

      • +2

What's that got to do with jeeps being rubbish? Fiat and Chrysler and also rubbish.

        • Fiat also has terrible customer service apparently

        • Jeep is owned by Fiat-Chrysler.

          • +1

@Speckled Jim: Yes, but what does that have to do with the posters statement that jeeps are crap?

    • Jeep … yes … Grandpa had one … 1945, army surplus.
A bit open and bone crushing but easy to drive. Fun to drive.
      Good old Jeep.
I wish they would still make them …

    • Owning a a Jeep is like owning a B747 in 2019. And I mean the old 747s

      • more like a Max8, more time in the workshop than out?

  • +2

Hey, OP, if you consider Toyota vehicles as overpriced safety death traps, what do you recommend we all buy??

    • +4

      Reliant Robin :)

      • +1

        Nah, go for a Trabant.

    • +1

      Tesla.

  • +3

Kia has caught up to the Japanese. They have the third lowest recall rate which is probably why they can offer a 7 year warranty.

    • +2

I hope Koreans makes more cool cars in the future like the stinger and i30N :)

    • Didnt hyundai buy them out?
Shame theres still such a stigma with the Kia name.

      • +3

Hyundai and Kia are sister companies :)

        • Hyundai is the luxury brand position vs. kia is the enthusiast and does well in Europe.

          Similar platforms across both.

      • Yeah I meant to say Hyundai actually. Great cars.

    • lol, we've just rented a kia santa fe. Any type of hill and the engine sounds like its going to overheat and die, it warns about your seatbelt as soon as you turn it on (not actually move) and plays a chime every time you turn it off like your shutting down a computer. If you don't sync your contacts it always asks everytime you turn the car on.

I hope its because its a cheap model, because if they all do it then id drive it straight into the ocean.

      • +1

That's your problem, rental companies buy the base models.

Also every modern car I have encountered warns you of no seat belt when you turn on the vehicle. Doesn't yours? How old is your daily driver?

        • My kia rio warns for key in ignition with drivers door open. It's a bit annoying

        • Yeah and who doesn't love some Ocarina tunes on exit?

        • my toyota doesnt warn me until i start driving past 5km/hr which i think makes more sense

          • @Oz8argain: That would be illegal. You need to be restrained in a moving vehicle.

            • @Ryanek: excatly!! that's why it doesn't make sense if the vehicle have not moved and starts beeping at you!

              • @Oz8argain: Ahh but I contend that it should beep you even before you move because by then it's already too late and you've been booked!

      • -1

Every car warns you for every single thing now, it adds to the safety rating.

      • maybe it's rental company's fault for not regular servicing?

  • +4

Not sure why people think recalls are bad. Anyway, the inconvenience factor of recalls aren't that high. But when a car break down unexpectedly, it is potentially extremely inconvenient.

  • +5

Well OP is technically correct. A lot of people ARE fooled into thinking that spending more money will get them something better than a Toyota.

  • +3

came because of the toyota supra thumbnail pic - sad to see no toyota supra comments :'(

    • Buy the BMW version, better option than the Supra.

      • I believe the Supra is the better driver's car, steering etc.

Pity the BMW looks much better.

I've seen the BMW in person but not the Supra.

    • Not sure how the Supra is related to Toyota reliability.

    • -1

Ugly, BMW engine and no manual, no thanks.
