Is Anyone Here Not with Any of The Big 4 Banks?

I've got a CBA bank account, which I keep "in case I need to go into a branch" but never use. Other than that I use ING, Ubank and American Express for everything.

I'm guessing most people here have at least 1 Big 4 account, but I was wondering:

Does anyone here no accounts with the CBA, NAB, ANZ and Westpac?

P.S. I want to count banks like Ubank and St George as smaller banks, even though they're owned by Nab and Westpac.

  • There are a lot of banks that have branches which are not the big 4. I have a Cth credit card but only because I can't be bothered cancelling it and it's nice peace of mind as you say. I'd be happy if it was a CC with any other bank either too though.

Also I guess worth keeping it - they have free barista made coffee in the Bris flagship branch if you have an appointment, even if its to sort out a few trivial things.

    • Suncorp have that in their flagship branch here in Sydney too. I needed it while waiting to sort out the darn app of theirs!

Wow hurray, that's great. What's the customer ID and password please…

  • So far these results are the opposite of what I was expecting. I thought Only Big4 -> Both -> Only Smaller Banks
Looks like "Tier 2 bank" is the term I was looking for.

    • Tier 2 are your macquarie, bankwest, bendigo, bank of melb, suncorp etc.

Just remember some of the smaller banks are affiliates of a big 4.

    • Yeah, noted:

Sticking with CBA because of the very well maintained APP.

    • You should try Macquarie Bank. They've got the best banking app on Android I've ever seen!

I love the CBA app, but the latest update, makes it very……..bright? Like a child designed it. Still great though.

      • I haven't been on wifi for months. Just updated and tried it. Not impressed, I want the old one back lol.

    • top logic

  • Macquarie mainly but I have a few accounts open with various banks to deposit/withdrawal cash.

  • Many non-Big 4 banks have branches now. In fact, some have longer opening hours.

Bank of Melbourne branches (the equivalent of St George, and other brands in different states), are open half-day on Saturday, and close at 5pm every day. The Big 4 do not have the branch advantage anymore.

Having said that, some of us have account(s) from the Big 4 from the past; and as long as they do not incur a fee, see any reason for closing them.

  • BankFirst (was Vic Teachers CU) + uBank + 28degrees + Amex, here. BankFirst have a nearby branch which I might use once a year.

HSBC - daily spend under $100 (for 2% cashback)
Amex David Jones card - spending at supermarkets (for bonus QFF points)
Macquarie card - other spending (for QFF points at $1 = 1 point)
ANZ - mortgage (for 300k QFF bonus)
CBA - everyday account (does the job & can't be bothered to move)

    • HSBC - daily spend under $100 (for 2% cashback)

Thanks! I'm going to see if I can get this too…

  • I'm a QLDer and have everything with Suncorp.

I am with 5 banks and none are the big 4.

  • ME Bank only

    • I closed my ME bank account after sitting through too many of those cringe-worthy ads at the Cinemas.

  • I've been with Commonwealth since I was born. I almost ditched CBA about 10 years ago because they were slow to introduce the debit cards and I wanted to make online purchases, but the finally brought one out and I've stuck with them. The app is really good, and it's just day to day so I don't really have any reason to move. My savings is with Ubank, I've played the credit card roulette with probably every bank in the country.
I don't live in Aus any more but I still have accounts with CBA, Ubank, Citibank and Macquarie, and CCs with Bankwest and Amex.
