Do You Overbuy / Overstock When Products Are Half Price?

Just wondering if its worth it to buy a lot when things are half price.

or do you just shop each time and buy at half price or plan for future buying ?

I drink a lot of coffee …but thought buying 6 jars at half price wasnt worth it, but go thru a jar a machine month so i should think about plannng ahead

Any of you plan ahead ,do u save heaps?

    yes for non-perishable goods

+1 Soups, bath soap, long-life milk, etc.

      …but I don't consider it "over-buying"
      …nor do I consider myself a "prepper"

      Having lotsa easy-to-make meal fixin's
around can $AVE me Money, as I don't
need to go shopping anywhere as often.

And… as I buy in $300+ Orders [from
      Woolies] & I tend to buy+use discount
cards to pay for my orders, so I save
on petrol, wear+tear on cars… AND
      my Woolies deliveries are Free.

That should warm any OzB'ers hearts…

      • UHT milk has an expiry date, it's just a lot longer then fresh milk.

I stocked up on soap, shampoo and toothpaste when they were half price at Priceline 2 years ago, haven't had to buy any since ๐Ÿ˜

    • Note toothpaste like sensodyne has expiry date.

  • +6

Non-perishable supermarket items .. most definitely. Basic math, but my wife still gets confused as to why I came home with the item she sent me to the supermarket for plus 6 tubes of half-price toothpaste.

What everyone else said. Stocking up on Sorbent Hypo-allergenic tissues from Coles as we speak.

    Also needs a yes/no poll

I find the half price promos mostly rotate regularly anyway. I did it before I had my daughter, purchased like crazy, then they're back on special 2 week later anyway.

    • I notice that with Heinz 535g cans of soup
(I also notice Campbells' 495g soup cans!)

      But that's fine… I may try a new flavor
to bulk-order next time, if I like it…

      But - for Soups - I =AVOID= those with:

      • Water as 1st ingredient
      • Too much Sugar & the like
      • Lotsa pasta (except Ministone)
      • Lotsa beef

      Fav's incl:

      • Heinz "Tomato Chicken Curry"

      • . " . "Butter Chicken" (a bit watery,
but makes chopped Broccoli taste great!

      • Heinz "Chili Beef" [not Too much beef]

If I have an ALDI nearby, "Soup Co." are good/better
if slightly more costly than the 2 monopolies (here)

    • I've noticed this too - only because the La Esperanza (or whatever it is) Olive Oil is on special at Coles seemingly forever.

unfortunately i am now a w anker that likes fresh coffee beans so my advice on saving money is to stay ignorant

    • +1

      i am now a w anker

Don't forget to stock up on lube when it's 50% off then

    • I used to work for a Harry Anjer, in the Olde Country…
do ya' think W Anker could be a relative…?

  • Yep, half-price specials I stock up big time and store in my garage.

Visitors must think I am a Dooms-Day prepper.

Nothing wrong with being able to be self sufficient for a short period - Australia has, and will continue to have, natural disasters that may require you to be able to look after you and yours.

Only if you try to tell us you can Store Enough POWER
to run your home/shelter for the Months, that folks
hit by Hurricane Dorian will be without power, soon.

South Australia spent HEAP$ to create such an impres-
sion, with very little (in terms of backup time) to
show for their million$ to TESLA.

IMO, AU really needs to -LOSE- its fetish for:

      • "Come & See the World's Largest <Who-Cares-What>"

'don't even have "The Grand Canyon" on my Bucket-List

    • If they see them, you are not a prepper as you are failing OPSEC. ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

  • +2

Yes, for SSDs I do :)

  • Not really, but mostly because I move around quite a bit so I like to stay light, also my tastes change too quickly that I don't know if I'll overstock on something and then never use it again because I want to try something different.

preworkout and protein. Dont care if they're expired.

    • South AU has a chain of "Rite Price" shops,
that "specialise" in selling products past
      their "Best By" dates

(I'm still working my way thru $ 0.50/250mL:

      • Kikkoman "Roasted Garlic Marinade & Sauce"

Shaken (not stirred) they seem to come
back to Life ~instantly, esp'ly on Hot
      foods.)

I got enough 1/2 price beauty product such as hair gel, shampoo, shaving cream etc enough for year. In case aliens taken over the earth. ;)

    • Same as you. If aliens take over earth I can share some of my "stock"

I know it's not the cheapest alternative, but Biozet washing powder when 50% off (regularly form Coles then Woolies) is my preferred washing powder. With three or four boxes in the laundry at any time I am sure I've never needed to buy at full-price.

  • +2

    Yes.

    Chocolates.
    Frozen Pizzas / Dim Sums.
    Toothpaste.
    Shampoo.
    Moisturisers.

  • +3

    Yes:

    • Dishwashing liquid/powder
    • Washing machine liquid
    • Tissues/TP/Paper Towels
    • Toothpaste/Floss
    • Moisturiser/Deodorant/Shampoo/Shower jel/hand wash

Always half price, or at least 40% off. Looking forward to getting some more ideas as I watch this thread.

    On a side note:

Being able to do this is an opportunity which poorer people don't have access to. It requires the up-front capital to be able to pay more up front, and the storage space in the house, to store all this shit. There are people who buy the 2-packs of TP because that's what they can afford until the next Centrelink or pay cheque comes in.

    • Some1 tells me Laundry Liquid can harm a washer…?
      so, he buys Laundry Powder.

Could that be true? IF so, why?

      • +1

What did he say when you asked him?

      • I've been using Laundry liquid for a good 6 years now in the same washing machine, and it's functioning perfectly.
I'm going to call it "false". People say a lot of things.

Do You Overbuy / Overstock When Products Are Half Price

Stocking levels depend on frequency p.a. at half price - you get the feel after a couple of years.

Ask yourself, do you sometimes have to buy buy things at full price, 20% off, etc.? If so, need to stock more. If have things that go past best before day, then slow down a bit.

Some things are only half price twice a year at C/W or once a year at Aldi. This is when you need to stock up.

  • +1

Yes - as long as I have the space for items and they don't expire or go bad before I get to use them.

  • +3

depending on the item … I still remember seeing a 5kg tub of feta cheese at my local coles, checked the expiry date '12 months' = challenge accepted and passed (by a couple of days …

If you're sold on a product, for sure … but for some items, greater access leads to greater consumption (I'll go through a large bag of chips every couple of months, but when i bought 6 bags of dorito's, they were finished in a week and I hadn't eaten much else

  • We used to fill empty spaces around the house,
but now we're investing in a $20,000 extension
to hold all the bargains in.

MAN ARE WE $AVING THE MONEY!!!

    (Disclaimer: Just kidding….)

  • My previous housemate used to buy heaps of snacks and drinks and never had them. I used to have them occasionally and replace them with new ones

  • Hell to the yes!

  • +1

For instant coffee, if you check the best-before date of the shelf stock, you can buy the quantity you know you will use before the best-before date. If 6 jars are too much, something in between, say 3 jars? By 3 months, probably another deal will come around.

I have 8 spare tubes of toothpaste.

  • disinfectant
    toothpaste
    shower gel/soap
    shampoo
    dog treats
    deodorant

  • no, i just over eat that one thing

  • Bonsoy is $3.80 at Coles this week. Emptied the floor stock at my local

  • Yes if it is non-perisable or could be frozen.

  • I use price hipster to notify me when any of of my non perishable are on special. I love it!

  • I always overstock laundry detergent if they are half price at supermarket.
    also toothbrush, toothpaste, bodywash, shampoo.

  • Yes,

When Dan Murphy's had Mountain Goat slabs of beer on sale for one day only at $50, I bought 12.

  • 2 person household, smallish apartment with limited storage.

We'll usually buy extra if it is:

-something we buy regularly anyway (pasta, peanut butter, etc)
-30%+ off RRP (>50% is ideal but some of our favourites don't often go to 50%)
    -has a long shelf life

We don't have space to store bulk produce so we'll usually just get a couppe of extras at any given time.

Most specials seem to rotate through fairly regularly so the ideal is to have enough to last until it comes round again.

  • It depends.

I did this with popcorn and potato chips one time (basically bought about 60 of each) and by the end of the stock some of the food didn't taste as fresh as the start of the stock.

Popcorn I think had less effect on staleness but the potato chips definitely tasted less fresh still edible just not as great so would not recommend.

On the flip side I stocked up on a couple months of toilet rolls, paper towels, sponges, scourers, dishmatic refills, soap, dish washing liquid and laundry powder and honestly it is the best thing not having to worry about that for months at at time.

We still have toilet rolls and paper towels to last us until the end of the year maybe even until the middle of next year so that is one less thing to worry about.

As for other kinds of food.. well we have a storage box full of rice and some lentils/flour/sugar/etc things that last awhile.

Not sure how long cooking oil lasts but we have a few 20 litre barrels in the pantry.

Canned stuff is not good to stock up on as they still expire.

There are a few items that don't really perish like salt, sugar and rice but yeah most stuff you want to keep fresh so best not to store too much of it.
