Credit Card Suggestions

Hey all, I'm looking for a new credit card, I feel like I'm not taking advantage of some of the benefits of them.

I currently have a gold card from CBA with a max limit of $2500 which gives me no annual fees due to my home loan also with CBA. On average, I spend $3000 a month on the credit card. I use it for almost everything.

I also shop at Coles (Flybuys) and have a VFF collection of points which I earn from work travel.

I've read the credit card guide, I'm not really interested in having multiple cards which also I guess means Amex is out. Talk me out of it.

So, what am I missing out on?

  • Limit of $2,500 and you spend $3,000 a month on the card?

    • -2

I have a 12k limit and spend 30-50k a month on mine. Just keep paying the money over to earn points

    • Yeah, I use the card more out of convenience. It's what's linked to Google Pay (tap and pay on my phone), PayPal, Childcare, utilities etc. I pay it off almost each night.

        why pay off every night?
if you have no offset/mortgage you can at least leave the money in a HISA until the bill is due?

        • If you're spending 3k a month with a 2.5k limit at the 50+ days you've spent 4-5k so you have to continually pay it off.

          • @Soluble:

I pay it off almost each night.

yes, every day is totally necessary. my bad. /s

            • @bohn: Well that's not what you said, you said keep it in a HISA until the bill is due which is not possible in this case as the bill has to be paid before it's due.

              • @Soluble:

yes, every day is totally necessary. my bad. /s

Not hard to make a one off $500 payment if you are spending $500 over your limit.

If you're spending 3k a month with a 2.5k limit at the 50+ days you've spent 4-5k so you have to continually pay it off.

                ??
Make a payment of $500 once after $500+ purchases have been made
Statement period 19/6/19 -> 18/07/19 - Payment due 12/8/19 (prior to this date, funds in HISA/offset)
Make a payment of $500 once after $500+ purchases have been made
Statement period 19/7/19 -> 18/08/19 - Payment due 12/9/19 (prior to this date, funds in HISA/offset)

  • I'm a fan of the Coles platinum card, 2 flybuys points per $$.

    • Thanks, do you know if it supports Google Pay? I can see it does Apple and Samsung Pay

      • +1

Just tried Google pay, nope only Samsung and Apple pay

  • I'm not really interested in having multiple cards which also I guess means Amex is out

I used to think like that!

But now have a fee free Amex Essential - purely for the occasional offer that is useful Might be $10 off a $30 spend or $150 off a $500 spend if things work out

And Churn cards every year for signup bonuses

Banks - Bugger em Done nothing for me at times i needed help
    So take the money lol

  • What do you want to get out of the card itself?

Latitude Infinity has good reward value but no links to frequent flyer points.

ANZ travel rewards I personally like for its features - annual free return domestic flight, 2x lounge passes and no international transaction fees (but still earns you rewards points) if you're cool with the annual fee of $225. Reward points can be converted into flyer points including velocity.

Coles credit cards might interest you for the link to flybuys and velocity.

    • Thanks for the suggestion. For the card, I just want what I currently have plus anything extra. So I guess that means:
      Google Pay support,
No annual fee - if the potential rewards are equal or greater to the annual fee then thats alright,

Anything extra to these two things is what I'm looking for.

The Coles card has good rewards, but no Google Pay. The latitude card looks good too, but charge for international transactions. The ANZ card also looks good, the annual fee is high but the promotion and rewards cancel it out.

      • The Coles card has good rewards, but no Google Pay

Think it has just been added, see here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/482188

        • No Google Pay, just Apple and Samsung Pay.

          • @nathan026: hmm so it is, shame ;/
I might consider them in the future if they get google pay.

      • the anz card is actually really good. I had that, got the free flight, got the points (80k at the time), and have cancelled it, will be getting it again when my 12mths is up. The flight I got with it was worth much more than the annual fee.

        • I've been eyeing this card off but, being Canberra based, the flight destinations are quite limited. Add the that the need to book 60 days in advance (assuming seat availability) I'm worried I'd never claim the flights.

          • @Lunchguy: you might like the one I mentioned down lower 'Virgin Flyer is a good one to switch to when they have a decent promotion on (again, low points earn so not really worth keeping after the bonus period). I think I got 75k points, 129$ voucher, annual fee first year $69. This comes around regularly.'

I sold the voucher for $109 I think, so the card returned a profit (putting points aside).

      • So to update my comment above, Latitude Infinity has a low annual fee $69 but uncapped points - 1 point per dollar and $20 gift card = 2,000 points. Has google pay support

Coles no annual fee mastercard is 1 flybuys per $2 spend - I have this card but don't use if often, unsure if it has google pay support.

Westpac offer visa/mastercards with good sign up bonuses for points and sometimes waive the annual fee in the first year. Has google pay support

        • Yep, the westpac is a decent card. Recently picked up the altitude black 80k points, fee free first year, google pay etc. Pretty nice, be a shame to cancel it within the year :) But I will do it for the points ;) Been getting new cards every 3-4mths.

          • @bohn: I'm new to churning but i like my ANZ travel rewards too much to cancel it XD

            • @blueyez: heh yeh, the anz banking is nice too. I hate latitude banking (at least for my 28 degrees card). Shit interface, and they are slow to put transactions in. I'll definitely come back to ANZ but I hope to get more points, I think I kept the card about 3 mths then closed it. There's no real point (imo) keeping the ANZ long term as the points earn was pretty low, so you may as well earn more points on other cards once you've earned the points that came with the card (and booked your flight/got your lounge passes).

Virgin Flyer is a good one to switch to when they have a decent promotion on (again, low points earn so not really worth keeping after the bonus period). I think I got 75k points, 129$ voucher, annual fee first year $69. This comes around regularly.

The easiest thing to do will be asking cba for a platinum card for free (I’ve got mine with my mortgage). That’ll be a bit of an improvement but still not as good as some others (Amex qantas ultimate is the best one in the market at the moment IMO, you can collect the bonus points and then cancel it)

Good idea, thanks! I've just done this. I'll keep looking around as well.
