Wanting Your Advice Re Simple Samsung Phone That' Not Expensive

I currently have a windows phone which has done the job for 3 years and only want to upgrade to a Samsung since MS is no longer supporting windows phones. I only need the phone for calls, text, MMS, photos & would like to be able to easily install apps as needed. I don't ever use my phone for videos, maps or anything much else. Maybe the occasional use of the internet (I prefer my PC). I want one with a large screen, good battery life and clean, clear sound for phoning as well as clarity on the screen for reading messages. Good photos would be a plus. I have been looking on line at Samsung A8 which has a lot of good reviews although the cheapest I have found is at Bing Lee for $499. I've also seen the Galaxy A20 for $299 (i haven't looked around at cheaper yet) and wondered about this phone. Why is it such an inexpensive one compared to the other Samsung phones? Is it any good? I am looking to get the cheapest one I can for the functions I need of course :)

Any advice about Galaxy A20 and A8? I definitely don't want to spend more than what the A8 costs. PS my knowledge of phones is minimal Thanks!

    google reviews.

    • Hi Halvar, I have done that before posting :) but because I have such limited phone knowledge I didn't understand what the A20 lacks or can't do compared to the A8. :)

  • Hi OP any reason Samsung?
There's currently this thread which seems to hit your budget..

    • Hi there, I read that threat before posting :) would you know about the A20? I don't understand why that is so much cheaper. Its probably obvious to someone who knows phones but not to this ignoramus :)

A20/30/50/70 line replaced the A8's line.

A20 will fit your bill, and you should be able to get it for much cheaper on OzBargain

    Edit: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/481003 cheap as!

    • thank you Nalar. I read that before posting here :) but wondered, do you know what the A20 doesn't have that makes it so much cheaper than the other samsung phones? :) What can't it do or is lacking? thank you :)

        I have the Galaxy A20.

Compared to other 'more expensive devices'

        • The processor is a bit slow, and you'll feel that occasional sluggishness when several apps are open, or when something is installing or updating in the background.

        • The display is only 720p. However, it is AMOLED, hits up to 430 nits brightness and has very good colour reproduction, so while it makes for some fuzzy text, using the phone outdoors in sunlight isn't a pain.

        • The camera is quite mediocre, dynamic range is fine in good lighting conditions, but takes poor quality low light shots (the denoising improves it only slightly, it gets rid of the grainy bits but with a great loss of detail.

        • You'll easily scratch the back of the phone. buy a case for it pronto.

        The good things about it

        • Very usable display with thin bezels
        • Good battery life (4000mah(
        • fast charging
        • NFC and Band 28.

The higher end Galaxy A30 addresses the slow processor with a slight bump in clock speed and gives you a sharper display. But the camera is also just as unimpressive.

        • thank you! This helps a lot and what I was after :)

        • Scrimshaw how is the audio when using the phone? Clear, no noises? And are apps easy to install? Not too worried about the camera as my current phone takes excellent photos so I will probably keep using that. You mentioned some fuzziness with the text, how does that affect indoor use when reading sms? thank you!

  • The camera on the A20 isn’t great but it will suit all your other needs.

    • Thanks for the info

  • I just got my dad an A70 for 519 through ebay sale. He is very happy with it. Strong specs too.

    • Thanks jiberz. Its more than I want to pay for a phone but I will have a look at it. Is there anything negative about it so far?

      • Nothing negative. I think you at the same time the A50 was 350.
