Best Android phone around the $400 mark?

Don't really want to push past $400 and was looking for advice on a decent new phone for my needs, or how to find that info best.

Looking for a new phone if possible that has:

  • Android Pie
  • Can be used for Optus 4G
  • Decent battery and some sort of fast charge ability (4000mah or better)
  • An OK camera
  • Headphone jack
  • Decent processor
  • Can be purchased from an Australian retailer or online store for the warranty.

So far those that fit the bill seem to include:

  • LG Q60
  • Moto G7 Power
  • Nokia 7 Plus
  • Oppo AX7
  • Samsung A30

Any advice would be appreciated.

    • Thanks for the suggestion dasher, but the phone in that link fails the basic requirement list in terms of having outdated Android (it's only 7.1) and a tiny battery (3000mah).

Also on a side note, that old phone being sold at $800 before going on sale is completely laughable levels of ludicrous.

      • You can get Pie on it.
Battery is in your terms "decent".
it's better than LGQ60 which seems to fit your bill.
Nokia 6.1 also has 3000mah battery.

        • Thanks for the clarification re the Nokia 6 battery, I've removed it from my list of considered phones now.

          • @infinite: The v30+ has a 3300mah battery btw.

            • @dasher86: Yep, I'm hoping to find something that has closer to a reasonable standard 4000mah batter or better. Even 3800mah would be ok I guess. I just tend to have the type of usage with the phone that can have me away from a charger points for long periods of time, so need something a bit better than low capacity phone batteries.

              • +1

@infinite: Fair enough but don't only look at battery capacity.
I have a Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 which has a 5000mah battery.
                I also have a huawei p30 which has a 3550 mAh battery.
And like for like the Asus only comes out marginally ahead.

              • @infinite: If the size (7 inches) doesn't bother you should consider the mi max 3 I mentioned below as it has a 5500mah battery

                • @Caped Baldy: 7 inches ain't usually considered big, but damn that's a big-ass phone :)

  • Nokia 7 Plus
    Oppo Reno Z

    • Thanks for the Nokkia 7+ suggestion, I hand't thought about that.

It appears the Oppo is a $500 phone though & that's $100 out of my budget.

  • Wait for Nokia 6.2, just announced.

    • Thanks but it looks like it wont be here for another two months, estimated price is about $100 more than my budget and the battery is only a small-ish 3500mah.

Looks like a great compact phone with nice spec's for people who don't mind having the phone on a charger all the time though.

  • +1

As mentioned above the LG V30+
If you want reliable battery life the mi max 3 has been very solid for me. It is massive though. Not the greatest camera and can't install gcam with nightsight straight out of the box (which you can with the LG).

  • Wait till phonebot has some Xperia xz2 for $400

    • Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they sell used and second hand phones?

      • Refurb, still good value for s845 chip.

  • MI 9SE or if you dont mind sd 835 then MI6

  • LG V30+

Battery life seems to be better than the capacity suggests

  • A50 on a $49 plan at Optus
