Classic man!! Start a petition and ask them to tour Australia!!

  • +24

Cheaper than the ipod touch 128G. Also with integrated DAC. Good deal for music lovers:D

    • +6

      This can make calls too!

    • I have a G6 as my DAP and it's awesome .. the Hifi DAC in these units are awesome.

    • Currently using a htc10 as my work audio source, is this much better?

    • -1

      Also with integrated DAC

Every device with a headphone jack has an integrated DAC.

The DAC in this device sounds like every other DAC: the same. A $2 DAC sounds the same as a $2,000 DAC.

      https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/high-end-pc-audio,3733-…

The science behind transforming digital samples into an analogue signal is completely understood. You cannot get better than perfect.

      • Some audio boffins get very very upset by stuff like that. I tried to explain LossyWAV/LossyFLAC to some people on the MusicBee forum and about five people just started attacking me because they thought the whole format was invalid. They didn't care that MusicBee already ripped to that format and all I was asking for was to keep the file suffix .lossy.flac in certain sorting operations. It was just an abomination to them.

      • Actually, I think the bit some people might like about this phone's DAC is not the DAC, but the amplification section that can cope with high impedance headphones etc.

  • +1

How is the camera on this?
How does it compare with s8+?

    • +7

Both are the same generation phones.
Snapdragon 835 the direct competitor to Exynos 8895
So expect similar performance. I've read that the rear cameras are pretty decent, but the front is crap. You can easily youtube some videos for a camera test.

      • +8

The LG camera app does the camera no favours, you can easily load up the pixel camera app that improves things.

I have had the V30+ for about 6 months its a very good phone for the money.

Pie update was pushed to Australia 3 weeks ago I've had no problems with it other than it kills old themes as it updates to UX8, very stable.

        • +10

While sure LG auto camera is lacking please don't dismiss their app so quickly… For people who like manual modes it's among the best. I have a G6 and often use GCAM though sometimes even it gets things wrong and I just go manual mode for the result I want

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Fair enough but like most people I generally use the phone camera in Auto mode but yes, as you say when you load up GCAM we now have a choice.

The V30+ LG UX is happy to co-exist with Google pixel apps.

        • +1

My G7 updated to Android 9 too.
I hate that it no longer "pins" my apps to recently used properly.

The pinning feature turns off itself randomly also when I update the app.
Android 8 did not do that!

    • camera is good, the FRONT camera however sucks donkey B@llz

      • +2

        wow, i gota see that

        • +3

There are web sites that cater for activities like that.

      • +3

Might go halves in one with my Donkey

      • I think it's on par with my old Axon 7. The Axon 7 front camera wasn't anything amazing ether.

    • I don't have the s8+ so can't compare. But you can install gcam with nightsight via an apk.

    • +7

I have this phone. I think the camera is excellent, and the wide angle camera is insansely useful for me (construction). My girl has the s8, IMHO the camera is on par.

    • -4

camera is crap, dont trust the people here.

      • +5

        Keep smoking

  • +19

I got this phone from the last $399 Jb deal (upgraded from iPhone SE). I am so happy with it. Now I am trying to convince my wife to leave the Appleverse

    • +3

I'm in the exact same situation haha. Although she did have a play around with mine and enjoyed it.

      • +7

Although she did have a play around with mine and enjoyed it.

Same here, but it's my hand.

    • +1

It's relatively rare for people to leave the Appleverse. They get their hooks into you early and make it hard to leave. Especially if they also have Macbooks and other Apple products.

      • +1

We have no other Apple products so it was easy for me.

  • +4

    Wow what a price.

Now I’m torn between these 4 similar priced phones.

    mi 9, Reno z, a50 and this lg .

Leaning towards the Reno Z. Is the LG better camera?

    • thanks for reading my mind haha I was also pondering on the camera quality

    • +1

edit: i should add that the reason i wouldn't have got this is because i loved the bokeh on my oppo r11s, and found the mi9 bokeh to be much worse

i have a mi9 and the camera was the main reason i got this, however this is my opinion:

in ideal lighting, the "normal" camera is really good

its extremely hard to get a decent photo using portrait/bokeh. the shutter/processing is has a big delay, it blurs easy, and it also uses the telephoto so you have to be really far back from the subjects to get a reasonable photo. i also think the blurring is not very intelligent. i rate it lower than my old oppo r11s which took much better portrait photos. in low light, portrait mode is total garbage

photos blur a lot when lighting isn't optimal (no matter which mode). had i tried the phone in store (if it was possible at the time) i probably wouldn't have got this phone because the camera doesn't perform how i was expecting. (i think the glowing dxomark review must have been paid for)

there's also no physical OIS which i hear negatively impacts this camera

videos however, are amazing, the software image stabilisation is unreal. i have taken videos while running and you wouldn't even know it because the stabilisation is really damn good

i have no input for your other options, good luck!

    • -4

Surely camera is better in Reno Z among all.

    • I was in similar situation and went for A70 (got it for $450 - it has bigger screen) and I have no complaints.

    • +1

Reno Z doesn't have wireless charging (V30+ does have it). I have two wireless chargers so this is an important factor for me in choosing a phone.

      • +3

        V30+ is also IP68 rated

    • -3

      mi 9 slays them

    • +1

Mi 9 is easily the fastest, has the latest chipset and probably has a better camera as well.

    • -2

Mi 9 wins almost all categories plus is not 2 years old.

    • Similar price? Mi 9 is heaps more expensive?

      • got confused with the Mi 9T. It's only $50 more for that Mi 9 T

    • We have Reno Z and Mi 9T (with the pop-up selfie).
Mi 9T is faster than Reno Z
Mi 9T with GCam APK has a far superior rear camera, especially low light video.
Bloatware ~ on both - easily solved with Nova Launcher or Launcher 10

Both are amazing for the $401 we paid for the Reno Z (Sydney Mobiles ebay) and $419 we paid for the Mi 9T (Tobydeals)

  • +29

    Upgradable to Android 9 Pie
    128GB Storage
    4GB RAM
    2880 x 1440 6" OLED display
    IP68 waterproof
    USB-C
    NFC
    wireless charging

    $399 is definitely a bargain.

    • +8

      And Band 28!

    • +2

      This ^

I agonised over choosing my new phone. 3 years between jumps. It was like piggy in the middle, with like 5-10 equally awesome in different ways.

Got it from the last JB deal, with gift cards. It's like Xmas day every day.

  • +4

Got this phone for the wife from an Oz-bargain deal earlier this year. Great phone for this value, its still running strong. Camera is pretty good, the front facing one is a little crappy, but the camera on the back is great

    • +2

my experience with this phone is the cameras were really bad (coming from a huawei mate 10). it's low light pics were especially horrendous. Moved to a google pixel 3 and the difference is night and day.

      • +7

You should probably make sure you're comparing day to day and night to night :P Pixel 3 user here, how good is the camera!

      • +1

hmm yeah, I should of said the back camera is great - for the price of the phone. It isn't as good as the top tiers phone of Googles /Samsung/Apple etc

  • +3

Excellent price for an excellent phone

  • +4

I'd love to say I haven't had any problems with mine, but day 2 into my trip to Cambodia the battery has completely died. Same thing happened to my LG Nexus 5 a few years ago. Maybe I'm just unlucky, shouldn't be a hassle getting it serviced back home.

Otherwise a brilliant phone, especially for people who love listening to music.

    • +2

shouldn't be a hassle getting it serviced back home.

Oh, boy. You've never dealt with Evertec. They're horrible.

I hope you have a good experience. I certainly didn't

      • +5

I hope Evertec have their goddamn building burn down. Absolute waste of space they are.

        • +4

          What's your horror story?

My V20 (which I loved) developed very bad image ghosting. Started off only being able to see it on grey screens, but then it was noticeable most of the time - took it to JB (who were excellent) and evertec sent it back twice (over a 4 week period) after saying "Image ghosting is normal for LCD screens".

JB said "stuff it", and to go choose another phone.

          • +6

@giventofly: Exactly the same story. Ghosting quite obviously evident by JB HiFi. Sent it to Evertec - "ghosting develops naturally on OLED screens and is not covered under warranty". Well for one, it's not OLED you incompetent pricks, and two, yes it damn well is.

Sent it back another two times and got it back the third time after being told it had been replaced. Checked the scratches I knew were on the screen from before (good memory) while in store and they matched the scratches on my old screen so it hadn't been replaced at all. Also the ghosting was evident still.

Told JB if they tried sending it back to them again and didn't replace it right then and there I was filing a suit with VCAT on one of their display laptops. Got a refund within 10 minutes.

All-in-all I wasted a month of my life fighting with those useless pricks.

            • +1

@Tacooo: My G7 sometimes scrolls by itself. That's my horror story.
And the bottom half doesn't seem to respond to clicks as well not sure if it's software or hardware

            • @Tacooo: When I had issues with Evertec and Harney Norman, I contacted LG and made a complaint and the issue got addressed the following day.

          • @giventofly: That's a happy ending

          • +1

@giventofly: I was actually going to get a v20 as you can still get them on ebay as they are the last flagship phone yo have a removable battery, while still having a lot of the features this v30 has. But at only $100 more for this I think I'll go the v30. Im still using a 5 year old Sony Xperia z2 haha so this will be quite an upgrade.

            • +1

@Skinnerr: Absolutely it will. I wouldn't go the V20, it's too old - I have a V30 and it is still really snappy.

            • +1

@Skinnerr: V20 has infra-red remote, SD slot rather than shared second SIM slot, and replacable battery. V30 loses that, but does prove it is possible to get better sound than even the V20, has a more reliable fingerprint sensor, is water-proof(ish) and is quite a bit snappier.

That said, I miss the second screen

              • @terrys: Almost everything about the V20 was better but unfortunately they've moved away from all those goodies.

              • @terrys:

                infra-red

Damn I may need to downgrade. Or I watch too much TV.

Also to something with smaller display than 6"

  • +7

Good price but "was $799" made me chuckle.

    • +1

      Changed it to usually

      • I saw that, and chuckled. It's maybe worse.

        Ozbargainers know the usual price.

  • the plus version is not on gsm arena for specs :(

want to sell my A20 as its 720p which sucks

    • +1

It is the same specs as the v30

      • -2

Only because it is the V30 but with dual sim.

    • +1

The V30+ is just the dual sim variant. Confusing marketing but the correct page is here.

      • +13

V30+ is the 128GB variant. V30 has 64GB. V30+ models with single sim are sold in Europe, US, and Africa.

        • +1

Ah well there ya go. Even more confusing than I imagined. Didn't think there was a 64GB variant.

  • +4

The "usually $799" is just wrong now lol

  • +1

should be getting cheaper now… I paid just over $400 4-5 months ago

    • +2

      Well now it's under $400 so…

    • +2

Well it might have been. If the AU dollar hasnt tanked.

  • +1

How many of these phones are there…

Its current version is a V50 I'm waiting for V40 to drop to this price…

    • There is a v50? So this is two generations old, hmm makes it a hard buy then

      • Would recording up to 132 Db cleanly help?

        • nah not into audio that much. how would software updates hold up? android pie is still in the pipeline and we have 10 already

  • +3

    Great phone got one

  • +2

    Love a dac

  • Just in time, was weighing up my options over the weekend for a new phone, was spewing I missed it last time around and couldn't justify ~$500. Will pick one up, thanks OP!

  • +1

For owners of the V30+, does it have an Notification LED?

    I have looked at LG.com.
    I have looked at GSMArena.

I cannot find a definitive yes.
But forums like XDA developer suggest there is one but it's not a Notification LED as we used to know it.

Can you guys please shed some light?

I bought the G6 without checkingand not having one sucks, I am not making this mistake again.

    • +1

No. At least I haven't been able to find it in the settings after searching for nearly 30 mins. I missed the notification light on my Samsung s6 too… but the always-on display has (sorta) fixed it. It's more app specific, however, you can't read it when you're across the room

    • +5

No it doesn't have a notification LED. The 'always on' screen does show notification icons, but they're only handy if you're looking at the phone.

    • -2

My G7 has both Notif LED & Always On hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe….

    • No notification LED. I hate that it doesn't have it. I have to double tap my screen to see if it's finished charging. And it won't show previews of text messages when the screen is sleeping - it just has a small notification on the screen that you have to unlock the phone (from the back with fingerprints) to see.
