  • Cherry blossoms season?

    • Nah, a month or two earlier would be an ideal time.

    • +1

having lived in Osaka, and travelled to Japan multiple times, Cherry blossoms around Kansai usually start around the end of March through to end of April, but the full blossoms period usually just lasts for a week or two (hence back in the ancient times they often compare them to the life of a samurai), usually beginning of April

but may change depending on the weather, this year when I was there at the beginning of April was a bit later than usual because of the abnormal colder weather, even snowed when I went to Wakayama (just south of Osaka), there were some started blooming in Osaka city, but not full blossom

and the location plays a part too, the southern parts of japan will blossom earlier than areas up north, and especially higher altitude places like Nagano can be as late as May

If was around Osaka, travel date period includes April 5th-20th would be the safest bet to see some good cherry blossoms

I'm actually starting to feel bad about how many Aussies we're sending over there. Me included of course because I love Japan.

    • +2

Was at Champion bar in Shinjuku recently and I'd say 70% were Aussie haha

The great thing about Japan is how much outside of Toyko there is to do. Quite easy to get some where tourists are scarce. Saying that, Tokyo is just too damn fun. Been 5 times and am always happy to go back.

  • MyTrip looks extremely shady; they're the ones that are offering the $636 headling price. That price depends on you:

    • Not paying for an add-on that provides the option to change or cancel your flights. Paying for such an addon would actually make the ticket more expensive compared to booking at another OTA or even directly from Qantas's website
    • Not selecting any seats; selecting a seat on their site costs you more than double what it would normally cost if you did it on Qantas's website ($79 vs $35)
    • Not being a vegetarian/vegan/whatever condition or preference that means you need to select a special meal, you get slugged $9 when it's normally free
    • Not intending to request any customer service from them
    • Paying using a debit card

Please look elsewhere, either at a more reputable OTA or directly on Qantas's website.
EDIT: Referring to the OTA selector once you've found your dates on IWTF. Nothing wrong with IWTF, but the OTAs that you see (iFly, Aunt Betty etc) after selecting the dates and try to buy the flights.

      • Book directly via Qantas, its about $60 more expensive.
      • Find the lowest price 3rd party Australian website (that has an ABN), skiddoo.com.au is usually one of the cheaper ones on the list.
      • take a screencap of the lower price and use qantas price match guarantee (this has to be after you have booked with qantas and on the same day)
      • get the difference refunded to you as well as an extra 1000 FF points

      https://www.qantas.com/travel/airlines/price-promise/global/…

      • on a quick glance ifly.com.au seems to be a relatively cheap one on the list with an ABN

  • Should I buy now or wait for another sale? No real rush to get there next year.

    • 2 more things to consider is that the Olympic happening mid-july and OZ dolas ain't doing well at the moment.

Just be aware that it gets really hot (30C +) from late May. (Source: I went there in May this year)

Bring fewer clothes = more room for snacks/toys

      • That works :P

      • Trust me, it doesn't matter how light you pack - summer heat in Japan is horrid.

        • worse than 40C here in the country for 2 weeks straight?

        • +2

I am assuming it's because of the humidity?

  • thinking to go Osaka next year, 2 adults plus a baby. Has 300k point in citibank rewards. What is the best I can do with this?
