Which are the Most Comfortable Thongs?

G'day, am surprised no one's asked this.
Am looking to buy me some thongs and am after the most comfortable ones. Which brand of thongs do you recommend ?

Am looking for an everyday everywhere pair of thongs that are comfortable and airy (as I live in the tropics) and are available in really big sizes (13). I have worn Crocs Baya Flip for a while and though they are comfortable, I want to try out another brand.
Happy to spend around $30.

Cheers,

Yeah, I don't recommend beads, feathers or diamontes and double stitch all sequins!

The stuff from Reef are very very nice. But damn, they are pricey AF.

  • Just looked around for cheap & comfy. These are in my cart:

    AU $5.35, https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mens-Sandals-Flip-Flops-Beach-Po…

    AU $4.36, https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mens-Flip-Flops-Premium-Comfort-…

    AU $5.69, https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mens-Thong-Toe-Flip-Flops-Comfy-…

Not for you from your description, but maybe others.

I would go a little bit higher and get some comfortable sandals. Thongs are not good for you.

  • +7

    Birkenstock.

    • +1

Interesting. I find a lot of women wear this - I used to think its made of saw dust.
Are you able to recommend a bit more specifically ? I see options like "regular fit, smooth leather, soft footbed".
I am happy to spend on a really good pair.

      • +2

I also came here to recommend Birkies, I find in other thongs I get a sore lower back if I'm walking around in them all day, but the arch support in the Birkenstocks prevents that. Figure out your size then keep an eye on Catch of the Day, they often drop down to around $50.

      • +1

Dude, you gotta get Birks. Most comfortable thing you'll ever own. Better than your jeans that you've had for five years.

I have had a pair of the 'thong' style ones for about 3 years now, they're just starting to fail on me but that's cause I get them wet all the time. If you're conscious of getting shoes that don't scream 'I'm a man and my feet know it', you might want to avoid the sandal-y ones and get the thong-y ones like I had. I'd go for the sandals next time, myself, though.

Also, probably depends what colour your skin is as to which colour shoe you get. I'd avoid the black ones if you're super white like me. Makes your feet look a bit sad, especially if you have a sock tan.

        Options:
this is basically what I had. Simple, damn comfy.

You could go for something like this or this though if you aren't sold on the thong shape. I think these types would be even more comfortable and a bit more fashionable.

As someone else said, they do go on sale in various places so be patient and keep your eye out. Should be able to get a style you like for sub $100 easily.

    • Second this.
Go get fitted, there is a regular and wide fit and they will adjust the buckles. Wear in time 1-2 weeks, don’t just put them on for a day or think you can self fit, blisters are brutal. Style options, black goes with everything.

I bought Havaianas and other more expensive thongs before, but now I just stick with the $2 ones. They are like 5% of the price but still last about 50% just as long in my experience. Can't really tell any difference in comfort.

    • +1

Not sure if Havianas lost their quality and/or appeal. In 2005 I had a pair which lasted a long time, and never got chafing from the rubber around the toes. Bought another pair about 5 years ago now and they were the complete opposite. I do think a lot of fakes flooded the market and that could have been why.

    • +2

My guess is you are a moderately weighing average height fella. To me, there is no difference in havaianas or the $1 Bigw/kmart thongs they all feel like wearing sheets of cardboard. But then am a big fella - over 6'2 and over a 100 kilos. So.

I used to hate the idea of slides over thongs till I bought a pair of Nike slides, I have a pair of croc thongs too which are good but i barely wear them now because the slides are so good.

    • +1

Thanks for replying. I have never worn slides. Do feet keep sliding towards the front (and thus scraping the skin on the feet where shoelaces sit) ?
Also when you lift your feet to walk, does it pinch the section where the end of the strap is?

      • +1

Underneath the strap thing there is like a soft cushion that pushes down on the top of your foot to keep it in place, for me i havent had any pinching, the only downside is it took about a week for the cushion part to kind of mold to the shape of the top of my foot, wouldnt say its uncomfortable just not as comfortable as when they are worn in, after that its smooth sailing. Also i have had them for the better part of a year now and they look as good as when i bought them. Best part about it is no more rubbing of the plastic bit between the toes of thongs, and also wearing socks with them on occasion

        • +1

Are there any other brand of slides you have tried or recommend ? I am thinking for peace of mind and genuine Nike, I might go shop locally for it instead of ordering online. We have a platypus store up here (assuming they sell genuine stuff).
Am also interested in trying the Birkenstock. Do you have any experience with those and can compare ?

          • +1

@tik tok: My brother has a pair of Puma slides and likes them, he got them from rebel. I would definitely go in store and try them on if you can and see what you think, platypus are genuine and are a good store (i got them from there), plus me being a cheapskate i used Afterpay to get them so i paid $10 a fortnight for 4 fortnights. My partner had a pair of Birkenstocks and liked them but i have rather large feet and found them less comfy for me than a normal thong but she was the opposite. It was also hard for me to justify around 80-100 bucks on a pair of thongs.

Archies Thongs with Arch support, can walk in them all day with minimal feet pain

    • A lot of people recommend thongs with arch support. I have flat feet and absolutely no issues with the feet. I wonder if I will start having trouble if I start wearing thongs with arch support ?

      • +1

I would consider myself flat footed as well but didnt have any issues when wearing thongs with arch support. It hurt much more when getting used to my Birkenstocks

I would also caution against purchasing the slides though as they do not have the bit between the toes. I had the Nike slides for a while and found that they dont stay on your feet as well as thongs just due to the bit between the toes. Makes things like walking briskly and running with the thongs on easier.

        • Sweet. Thanks for your reply. And good points about the slides. Am undecided again :-|

    • if you wear thongs a lot, arch support is a good idea.

  • Best thongs I had were some cheap $3 ones from Woolworths. Very soft and comfy, the trade off is that they only lasted a 1 summer as they wore a hole through the ball of the foot.

Sandals are for old blokes or people who like fishing. Slides and Socks mmmmm.

    • I wish I could care for how footwear gets classified by age. I am only looking for the most comfortable option. Thanks for replying though

    • You don’t wear socks with Sandals. I just walked through five countries in Europe and word my Sandals just about every day. Comfortable, cool and don’t make you look like a bogan.

  • The best sandals are the free ones I got thanks to OZB.

  • I tried birkenstock for a while but they just made my feet really sweaty so gave up on them.

  • +1

I had a pair of reef ones. Lasted me years and were so comfy.
Then I bought mambo ones from bigw. They were also good for the price til my dog chewed them to bits last week.
Just bought 3 pairs at a surf outlet at ashmore on the weekend for 30 bucks total.
Got some havianas but their beachcomber style. A pair of kustom ones and a pair of billabong. So far so good. Not a huge fan of the plugger style.

  • +1

I like the el cheapo thongs from Rivers. Under $10. They seem softer under foot and are really comfy.

  • +2

adidas cloudfoam slides, just make sure you get the ones with the adjustable Velcro top for good fitment, i haven't worn thongs since the first pair of these more than 10 years ago.

  • I swear by these, I'm banned from wearing them by my SO: https://www.ebay.com.au/i/192223634680

The Mr won't like me sharing this with the world but for best value everyday you can't go wrong with the CK cotton range. If you're wanting to buy online hanky panky do a great range too that even features on the wall street journal their cotton blend feels more naked but the CKs are fantastic all rounders.

  • Rocko's double pluggers. Aussie made too.

    • Yep. Cost $40 at chemists up here but they are heaps better then the kmart double pluggers I was loyal to for so many years.

      • I have never tried them b4, I had to wait till I could afford $40 (pensioner)
But I ordered my 1st pair a few hours ago
Just in time for the warm weather in Tassie
After the spell of cold weather coming :)

        • Comfort wise I have never had better in a thong so hope they are as good for you as they are for me.

  • +1

For the softest sole ever especially if you suffer from plantar fascia is the COBIAN thong. The sole os a lot thicker and extremely soft and comfortable. Sent from USA or Amazon.

  • +3

Victoria secret, don't get lace, go for cotton one

  • +1

4 dollar target ones. Don't last all that long, but are comfy AF

  • +1

I used to wear this brand called Dupe (owned by haviannas) Sadly doesnt exist anymore

  • +1

    HAVAIANAS FOR LIFE!

Kmart = Took 2 weeks till I busted me pluggers
Tommy Hilfiger = Uncomfy & slippery AF
SuperDry = Comfy but the design under the foot fades quick
Havaianas = I like the minimal design, comfy, lasted 5 years

  • +1

I like the Reef Fanning thongs. Cheaper ones tend to have a plastic thing that goes between your toes that irritates my feet (Fanning has material).

  • +1

i actually really enjoy crocs. I originally bought it for dragon boating, but happened to wear it out one day and damn, these are pretty comfy.

  • +1

Haviana- the ones with the thicker straps. They use to cost $40 now you can get them for $10 a pair. They last for ages

  • +1

more than $30, but olukai are worth it https://www.wildearth.com.au/buy/olukai-ohana-mens-dark-java…

I have had a pair that has lasted for 5 years.

I got some new ones at Anaconda about 6 months ago. Not sure if they still sell them.

  • +1

    Crocs for sure

Have 5 pairs. Great arch support, straps can't break. Was a crocs fan but have moved across

  • +1

    Birkinstock or copies of them

  • +1

I have billabong thongs, but more specifically they have a material strap instead of a rubber one. Very soft and it doesn't irritate in between my toes like the cheap rubber ones do.

  • For my benefit people should only wear closed shoes 😆

Just kidding, you do you. I have no suggestions though I hate thongs and sandals.

    • +1

Socks and sandals are equally bad

  • +1

Don't be tight and buy some Reef Fannings son.

  • +1

    hurley. just incredible.
    Like convertible Nike RUN shoes

  • +1

I have crocks and they are by miles the best. I can walk up to 10km a day in perfect comfort.

  • +1

Have a look at Starfish, they don't have plugs and also have arch support.

  • +1

Addidas masuer slides. Cheap as chips and regularly on sale at anaconda, those or Frenchie's from Bali my dude
