better buy a navman and get free 3 years map upgrade plus bigger screen and more features instead for under $200..it will cost you more now but it save you in the long run.

    • Agreed, but these wouldn't be bad for a youngen who gets lost easily and will probably treat it like trash anyway. Good 'backup' GPS for the price, though it would be an even better deal if it had a screen larger than 3.5".

      • the optus mytab 7" gps $100 :)

screen so big it blocks a good portion of your windscreen…

or if you want something cheap, I think telstra have their cheapest android phone for under $50, but it would be 2.8" screen - but it can do more than just gps. (eg games for the kids in the car if they are cranky)

        • do u need internet connection to use your optus tab gps?

        • @joannatan
if you use the std google maps then yes you need data.

but there are soem free android apps that have offline maps (not sure if include voice navigation though)

        • The MyTab is simply awesome - can't believe it was $99
In my (only) use so far it seems the Google 'Navigation' app needs data connectivity at the start of a journey (or if you change destination too I guess). It loads the relevant data/maps and then relies on the GPS to work out where on the (loaded) map you are
I got where I was going fine - in fact it worked better than my TomTom that my wife just paid $99 to buy the maps for again
But when I turned around to come home (new destination) without data connectivity - no go

Keen to try out the apps that don't require data
VOTER1 - care to drop some knowledge on me what they might be?
          Cheers

          @noble

try mapdroyd or maverick or locus.

I think these dont have free turn by turn navigation and if you're in the outback it might not be as complete as you'd like.

I think maverick is able to cache google maps so just when you're at home just tell it where you're likely to go and it will download all the maps while you're at home.

think mapdroyd is good for when you're traveling to a foreign country and wont have access to data. (eg download the entire country beforehand)

oh if you're willing to pay there is obviously a large selection available, I think tomtom etc is on there but they are a bit pricy, especially compared to the mytab.

I think the cheapest one available with turn by turn is navdroyd which is $8

        • i guess my navigon that i bought from catchoftheday last year for $80 is the best investment for me with free upgrade for 2 years that just start this year :)

lol, 3.5" screen not big enough for you?
Perhaps you can mount a big LCD screen on your dash and have AV out from the navigator, if you don't mind a 'minor obstruction'.

  • I have this GPS but mine is the next model up with bluetooth too. I paid $350 about 2 years ago.

Good unit except in the city but i dont think any GPS works well in between all the city buildings as they cant get a fix on the satellites and dont let that pic fool you you there is maybe 10 buildings done in 3D like that in Sydney.

  • This is a great deal. Don't think I've seen one this cheap. I bought one in 2008 for $100 but the software is slow to use and outdated I think.

  • looks like its running iGO software…. I wonder if its a WindowsCE device as Id want the ability to run TomTom instead.
