Manual V6 or V8 Car - what are my options?

EDIT - Looks like Holdens or Fords are my only real option (aside from utes).

Suggestions? I've never driven anything that's not Japanese or Korean. Leather interior is kind of a must for me too. Budget is $25k max.

  • How much are you willing to spend on petrol?

    06-13 Lexus IS250s are manual (NA) V6s.

  • +1

    New or used? Budget?

  • +7

    Manual 6-Cylinders (inc I6)
    Manual 8-Cylinders

    There's your options. Enjoy

Edit - Links updated to limit $20k budget and NSW location

Nice detective work. Shame there are many OPs who think we are psychotic and just know what the budget is.

      • +13

        we are psychotic

A few of the members are unfortunately ;)

        • Lol!

        • haha

    • Leather interior is kind of a must for me too.

      Why?!

      • +6

because leather is classy? especially in summer when you have to peel your sweaty thighs off it

        • +8

Or when you get back into it after the car has sitting in the sun all day and you hear that bacon sizzle as you sit down.

        • If you have kids that mess, once you have had leather you cant go back

      • Comfort, moveability, doesn't collect dust and odors from years of bums. Obvious choice for anyone who spends a lot of time driving or enjoys long trips.

Maybe have both that and a DB5?

      • +1

Just to get your attention, SA plate RRB 007 ;)

    • Whats the servicing costs like? Is there capped price servicing at all? 7 years warranty?

  • +1

Ford Mustang, seen them low kays go for low $40K in a manual. Probably cheapest V8 that doesnt have million kays on it

    Budget??

    For a V6, you can’t go past a E36 M3.

For a V8 maybe an Aston of some sort ?

Really hard to make any serious reconnections if you don’t specify budget, seats requirements, convertible, min year ?

    • +9

      There has never been a V6 M3

    • Someone did a commodore V6 conversion on an M3?

    • The straight six M3's are starting to sell for pretty penny's, the e36 is getting a bit old and the E46 is renowned for having expensive issues with the sub frames cracking.

The E92 M3's are priced pretty well at the moment in my opinion. The naturally aspirated V8 might not be preferred by the purists but I think they are great.

Both will have leather by default, I dont think there was an option for cloth or alcantara in either model.

This is from someone that's been in and out of the market for an E46 M3 or E92 M3.

Unless you plan on towing a caravan, why would you need so much grunt? Petrol isn't going to get any cheaper!

  • +1

Some left field 6 cyl options:

    Hyundai Tiburon
    Golf R32
    Subaru Liberty 3.0R Spec.B

  • +1

    370z / g37

    • This is the best answer, or a 35. A manual g35 is such a damn good car for the price they go for. If you can get over the slightly ugly front end, powerful, usually have an LSD, nice interior, handle a shitload better than people give em credit for (i.e I think better than old s chassis') and super well put together and very reliable.

Only downside is if your into modifying, you're not gonna get any more power out of them.

If you are thinking "Holdens or Fords", yet have "never driven anything that's not Japanese or Korean", the answer seems to be Kia Stinger.

    • +1

Does that come in a manual?

      • +1

Nope! No manual spec for the Stinger

        • Fair point. It's a shame manufacturers are dropping the manual option (e.g. BMW).

          • +1

@daewoo: It's not always the manufacturer, often it the local distributor deciding they'll drop manual from the line up. Subaru is a good example of this. Other than the WRX is the rest of the line up is CVT only but that's a local call, Subaru still manufacturers their cars in manual for other markets.

  • VZ or ve ss. Chinese gt42r, cam and springs, injectors, exhaust manifolds, clutch and tune. Then you'll have 600 ish horsepower in a manual V8 for under $20k.

    • +1

      You missed breaks and suspension
Going fast in a straight line is boring

      • +2

It's a commodore, it's not going to be doing cornering.

Just grab some brakes off a hsv.

  • Go for a Skyline 370GT Coupe in manual. They're miles ahead of the Holden/Ford 6's in terms of performance and interior quality.

    • +1

Interior quality? Nissan are pretty average in this area imho.

      • +1

They were meant to be sold as a competitor to the german premium brands in every export market, so naturally the interior isn't gonna be the same as your run of the mill Pulsar or Dualis, although the older V35 350GT did leave a lot to be desired - but thats a completely different kettle of fish. Fit and finish in the 370GT is similar to a Lexus IS/GS, which are also far and beyond the interior in the Falcodores.

        • -1

What they are meant to be, and what they are, are two very different things. I've driven a few 370s, the interior is meh. I liked the "z" in the air vent that connects to the door.

          • @brendanm: Sorry but the 370z really isn't comparable to the Skyline 370GT interior wise, its like saying the Lexus ES350 and Camry both have meh interiors because you sat in a Camry once and they're on the same platform. Just about the only significant things the 370z shares with the Skyline is the infotainment and the engine and transmission, if you said that was shit, you might have had a leg to stand on here. 370z has gone for sports feel, no emphasis put on sound deadening, comfort or luxury, so obviously the two cars will be very different in their interior. I've driven both the 370GT and 370Z long term, and a number of falcons and commodores. 370GT is better than the other three.

            • @justaperson: Meh the 370gt is even uglier than the z inside. Saying a 370 is better than a falcon or commodore isn't setting a very high bar. Like most other Nissan's, the interior will feel cheap and dated very soon.

Last time I checked, infiniti failed in Australia as people bought pretty much anything else instead. It's still just a tarted up nissan.

              • @brendanm: "They're miles ahead of the Holden/Ford 6's in terms of performance" Enjoy that clutch fan.

                • @jonkvh: I don't understand?

                  • @brendanm: Sorry brendanm, meant to reply to justaperson.

                    • +1

@jonkvh: No clutch fan in the 370GT, its electric. You're thinking of the 3.5l

            • @justaperson: Thanks for your insight. If I'm not mistaken the 370z has electric and heated seats as well as leather interior. I think that definitely meets the criteria for luxury even if it's not the absolute best of the best.

I've always been told to stay away from Skylines mostly because of reliability issues and high insurance cost. The latter would probably still apply to the 370 but not the former from what I read. Would you say the 370z is a good daily driver?

              • +1

@SlavOz: Mechanically speaking, the Skyline 370GT and 370Z are the same vehicle. The Skyline really doesn't have any reliability issues, most of those were fixed in the V36 generation with the VQ37VHR and VQ35HR motors as were the reliability issues fixed when Nissan replaced the 350z with the 370z. They also have the woodgrain, heated leather seats with memory, bose audio, 360 degree camera and a number of options not normally seen in the 370Z. In terms of insurance, insuring the Skyline 370GT and 370Z are similar in cost. About $600 per year for either with NRMA insurance.

The only issue with the Skylines are the infotainment which is in Japanese and its very expensive to get it converted. Both will be ample in terms of performance, though the 370Z has the advantage being a lighter car. The Z you'll also be sure will have the correct mileage on the odometer, whereas the Skyline being an import, you'll need to make sure the owner/seller has the export certificate and japanese auction sheet to make sure the mileage is genuine - this was due to a number of dealers, particularly on Parramatta Rd that used to wind back the mileage up until around 4 or 5 years ago when they got caught.

  • I think you need to be more specific.
    Sedan hatch coupe or wagon?
What's your max year model and kms?

  • If you're after something under the $25k mark a late model Commodore VF SV6 would easily be at that price point. We bought one of those when the DH refused to get a family SUV. Still spacious and a comfortable ride as a compromise.

  • Inline 6 > V6 ;)

What are you looking for, what is your requirements?

335i are nice, could get into a pretty new Falcon and Commodore (nice cars but not that fun IMO, for that price point anyway), or go something a bit more classic and have a daily? E36 M3 or similar would be a wicked car to drive.

350zs feel cheap, 370zs seem nice though, and drive nicely.

Lexus IS can be had in manual, but may be under powered.

Theres so many options, entirely depends on what you need out of it.

  • THANKS FOR TIPS GUYS!

The Golf R32 seems like a winning suggestion. Very surprised at a car so small and lightweight with 6 cylinders.

I always wanted a 350z when I was younger but it never happened, looking at them now they really caught me eye. I was kind of set on a sedan for the extra space but if 350z is reliable and not prone to massive problems like some sports cars I might go for it.

    • R32 is slower than a lightly modded GTI, just fyi. Far cooler, though.

    • 350z is reliable, just dated.

      • So I read. Looks like the 370z is basically the 350 v.2 (newer design and components). Looking into general reliability or known issues/maintenance costs but if the reputation checks out I think I've finally narrowed it down to a couple of choices! :D

        • 370z is much better.i wouldn't even consider the 350 as you can get 370s in your budget

    • +1

The 350 is going to be so much more reliable than an R32. I would personally stay away from that 3.2 and especially if it's DSG.

It also is not the best drivers car, feels a lot heavier than it is and pretty meh to punt through windy roads. Sound fantastic though.
