Decent sounding & quality powered bookshelf speaker’s at an acceptable price.
For those after decent sound-quality from Edifier, I recommend the S2000Pro models and up.

Currently $499 on Edifier AU official website.

Worth the extra cost over the S1000db IMO.
S2000Pro has the 4 EQ modes which allow for a lot more control over the sound than the S1000db which has just the Bass & Treble controls on the back.
(On the S2000Pro you can set the EQ mode to one of the 4 options, then you can fine tune with the Bass & Treble controls)
Also the S1000db model uses titanium metal-dome tweeters which can be harsh & fatiguing to listen to. The S2000Pro has superior Planar-diaphragm tweeters which achieve as much detail / resolution but are much less fatiguing to listen to.

Notes:
- Planar diaphragm tweeter, Aluminium cone woofer.
- Four EQ Modes: Vocal, Monitor, Classic, and Dynamic.
- Bass & Treble control knobs on the rear to fine-tune the sound.
- DSP-based cross-over.
- Included wireless remote for audio input, volume adjustment and mode switching.
- Front status-indicator light tells you which source you are listening to.
- Inputs supported: coaxial, optical, RCA, AUX, XLR and Bluetooth.
- Look good with the speaker grills on (to protect from kids / pets).

Worth noting that these speakers have a slightly up-ward facing angle.
(Suitable near-field listening at a desk, or placed on a low cabinet when further away

  • How would these compare to a soundbar. Looking at getting one for my living room. The power switch on my Logitech Z623 have gone for good now. Doesn't click any more.

Also, how would the sounds compare to a Logitech Z623. I mainly watch movies instead of music listening.

In general these would be suited more to music-listening & the just the occasional movie / TV.
As the comment says below, if you are after more of a ‘cinema’ experience for movies, a sound-bar is probably more suitable.
Although some may argue that there are advantages from bookshelf’s over a sound-bar.
Some of the advantages being wider stereo-image (due to greater possible distance between speakers), and better clarity due to more directional sound (having the speakers drivers face directly at you).

Regarding the Logitech Z623, it has been almost 20 years since I owned Logitech speaker + sub system.
From my memory the Logitech’s were computer speakers & the sound was mostly bass & little of everything else (things may have changed since then).

You need a soundbar (at least 2.1) or a proper home theatre system for full effect if you mainly watch movies.

    Random Guy review

seems like it's more for quality music playing but cannot really compare as he just criticized what I had (HW MS650 SOUND PLUS used with my 55" Sony TV lol….)

My Sony 75" uses 5.1 home theatre and my 85" Sony uses 7.2 home theatre big difference in terms of surround sound.
So if you have space, go for home theatre amp.

Yes thanks for your comment. I agree these Edifier’s are more suited for listening to music, and the occasional TV / Computer source mainly for the convenience of all-in-one.

      • I owned 4.1 Edifier speakers many many years ago for my PC, they have come a long way to be this good.

Currently using a Jmax Productions (QHR125 WS - C, SR, SL), Kenwood bookshelf (LS K711 - L & R) and a cheap pioneer woofer speakers for my PC room.

Great to watch anime, and listening to music such as "Sayonara Wild Hearts Album" so crazy in the game that I bought the album from iTunes last night lol.

        • Yes I too remembered when Edifier was once strictly a computer speaker company thanks for clarifying that.
I agree they have come quite a long way, while still short of “Hi-Fi” I think there are little-to-none that compete when it comes to ‘price to sound-quality + features’ ratio.

        • I am still new to the whole anime culture but thanks for sharing the link I will check it out.
I first came across anime with this clip and thought it had great story-telling.
          Spoiler Alert:

The daughter who had a paralysing illness, who was then put into a coma and given purpose & some sort of a life by being connected to a exploration / creation vessel flying through space where she uses her mind to create worlds & draw memories. And once in awhile remembers her early life with her father when she was little. And all this is with a music video.
I avoid TV shows in general, so I am quite distant from anime and other ‘episode’ format content in general.

I also came across this Zombieland Saga clip (edit: was wrong clip fixed now) recently, about a father who struggled with his daughter becoming a singer and was able to become a proud dad.
Then this music video which led to more Daoko music videos which led to this video. :O

If these are anything like the s1000db, then the mid-range is quite muddy.
If edifier have improved since the s1000db then these will be fantastic value for money, I really enjoy the s1000db with the exception of the mid range being undefined.
Maybe that's a result of the tweeters being harsh which will be a different result here.

Regarding S1000db & S2000Pro to my understanding, the S2000Pro is more than just a ‘revision’ of the S1000db even though it may look like it.
The S2000Pro being a ‘Pro’ series (together with the S3000Pro ) has an extra on-board DSP for the EQ option, XLR inputs, more power, and likely different tuning overall.
When using the XLR inputs on the S2000Pro it by-passes the DSP and gives you ‘direct’ audio signal.

The S1000db lacks XLR inputs so my approach to getting the best sound would be by using the Digital (Bluetooth or Optical) inputs. This way digital audio signal will be sent directly to the DAC (Digital-to-Analog converter) inside the S1000db which has been optimised for the speakers. (Digital > Analog conversion).
Optical input is preferable, since Bluetooth compresses the audio signal which also affects the sound quality.

If you use the Analog (RCA / AUX) inputs basically what you are doing to the signal is Analog > Digital > Analog which can affect the original quality of the signal.
Also with the Analog input method you are relying on the quality of the DAC in your source (computer / TV) which will likely do a worse job than the DAC in the Edifier.
Other than this only thing I can think of is you may have the Bass turned up too high.
Hopefully this helps to get the desired sound from your Edifier S1000db.

  • Would these be any good in an alfresco out of the rain or will condensation fry it?

    • You will probably be better of with something ‘weather-proof’.
Sonos One / Play:1 claims to be ‘condensation’ proof (moisture resistant), but I am thinking they mean indoors (like in a bathroom).

  • Come to think of it, these short Dynaudio Stand 6 may be suitable for these Edifier S2000Pro’s since the speakers have a slight upward facing angle.
(Please double check the Stand 6’s top-plate dimensions and S2000Pro base dimensions to make sure they fit).

Stand 3X have a slight upward-tilt of the top-plate which may make the increase the Edifier’s built-in angle too-much.
