FYI, Don't order more than the 1 (+1 bogof) as it'll make the transaction go weird.
I'm still waiting on my 4x units ordered and didn't get the BOGOF applied properly.

Was there anything for 3.5 inch one?

    • That'd be nice. Waiting for a deal, patiently.

    • +1

This won't be possible. 3.5" drive require 12V which USB cannot supply.

      • +1

My 3.5” case comes with its own power supply

      • Of course you can get them for 3.5"

  • But postage is $14.95 for me if I purchase 1 or 2, even though I'm en eBay Plus member.. So the total for me is $26.96.

      It's fixed, Please try again.

      • +1

        Thanks! Confirmed its all fixed.

Be forewarned that the 2.5" enclosures do not like being in a always-on use scenario.

Mine was connected to my xbox as my primary storage drive and while it worked fine for a while, the power IC on in the enclosure must have failed. it would boot up fine and games could be seen, but any kind of load on the drive (say starting a game) would cause it to disconnect from the Xbox and then the drive would 'restart'

took the SSD out of the enclosure and put it in a new one, and it worked fine.

Never had an issue with my orico one but only had it about 6 months. Buying 2 more because OzBargain.

    • +1

I've had 2 of these in raid1 connected to a rpi4 for about 1 month, so far so good.
Been waiting for this exact deal, so buying another 2.

      • rpi4 can do RAID over USB?

        • +1

Yeah, technically the rPI1 can do this as well, but very slowly.
Wasn't really viable until the rPI 4 with USB3.
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mdadm

You need a 3amp PSU to actually power peripherals like this though, and it got a lot better with a firmware update which reduced voltages.

    • what kind of speed u get?

Mine with 860 EVO 1TB cannot pass Seq-write of 150MB/s, tried different U3 ports, PCs, laptop.
copy a 5GB video file from SATA3 connected 860EVO, and laptop from a Plextor M6s.

        • Run Crystal DiskMark to test.
        • Try a different enclosure.
        • Try a different SSD (if you have a spare one).

Need to do a process of elimination. It's possible your enclosure uses an old chipset. Also, a lot of USB 3.0/3.1 gen1 chipset does not support TRIM over USB. With Orico, it is very luck of the draw whether you get one which can do TRIM.

      • +2

Mine was 128mbps write on a Intel 530 rated at 430mbps in the new USB-C enclosure, never really get what's advertised. My T5 is still the most reliable speed wise.

        • yeah, same result. it truly sucks.

i bought one due to the 5 Gbps transfer rate claim!

          • +1

@alexGoodwin: Something is not right, I am getting 330 MB/s using a pretty old and ordinary SSD (sorry, a 1TB 860 EVO definitely goes into a system for me, I only use cheap/old SSDs for USB). I also picked one of the worst, if not the worst Orico enclosure in my collection when doing the test.

        • +3

I just did a test with my enclosure, here is the result:
Crystal Disk Mark: sequential read: 435 MB/s write: 409.6 MB/s

Actual read/write according to Windows 10 when copying a large file (i.e. 7GB ISO): 330 MB/s. Copying was done from an NVMe SSD to this USB 3 enclosure with a SATA SSD.

When I copied from this USB SSD to an NVMe SSD (a different ISO file, roughly the same size), Windows initially showed 2.2GB/s for quite a while, but it did drop to 330 MB/s towards the end. Copying files from the USB 3 to the NVMe SSD definitely feel much snappier.

Test was conducted using AMD Ryzen 3xxx based system. I can re-run the test on Win/intel or Mac/intel platform if people want. The SSD used was a cheap Lite-On SSD (planar MLC SSD).

I have multiple Orico enclosures, and I picked one with an inferior chipset. I did get one which supports TRIM. The one tested does NOT support TRIM over USB.

Result is okay considered how much I paid for it. If I really want the speed, I would get an USB 3.1 gen2 enclosure which supports NVMe SSD. But, I prefer to have my good SSDs in the systems and just use cheap ones for external.

          • @netsurfer: THX for the test and infor.

i suspect that mine could very well be fake. my box is a yellow cardbord, did have all the brand name & details though.

i did a quick search 5 mins ago, there're quite a few NO brand ones look exactly the same. I bought mine couple years ago. never touch it again due to the poor speed. recently tried to transfer game lib to a bigger SSD, and no need to connect to SATA3 all the time

** Damn it, we couldn't let our guard down, even for a min. **

I have one being used on an Xbox One, constantly being power for about a year and a half now. No issues here.

    • I had the same issue with the enclosure where it stopped working. The drive itself still worked.

    • I have black orico 2.5 enclosure that dies after 10 minutes or whatever but I have a bunch of these clear ones (albeit bought 3 years ago so maybe different).

  • Any deals on powered enclosures?

With the Invertor, I would likely just use it to keep my laptop charged while I'm on the road, but wouldnt this do the job & be able to charge better & more at once?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/202657357294

    • +2

Yes, but this is different and can't be plugged into the ciggie plug.

If you just want to keep your laptop charged, look car laptop charger to suit your laptop (voltage, connector type, current, wattage) which is a DC-DC converter rather than the inefficiencies of converting DC to AC back to DC again.

But if you have to power other things, then an inverter could be used but be careful of the sensitivities of your electronics. Some would prefer a sinewave inverter. Others don't mind a modified sinewave inverter. Sinewave inverters are very expensive though.

      • +1

Yes it can be plugged into the cigerette plug.

I've read a little bit about them, I have a 2014 Apple MacBook (I think) and just want to have that charged in the car. Would the 175W Invertor by shopping square be effecient enough without damaging my charger?

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175-Watt-Power-Inverter-12-Volt-…

        • +2

Ciggie plugs are normally rated to 120W and you need to trace the circuit back to the fuse panel to see what other circuits are on the same fuse. You don't want to overload the circuit by plugging in a 3000W inverter.

The listing description also says this

—It's recommended to use the car cigarette lighter when electrical appliances less than 150W and connect to the battery directly when more than 150W.

      • Looking at the pictures the Inverter linked above for $35 does come with car cigarette lead/socket as well as battery clamps.

For the most part, I agree with your thoughts, but keep in mind graceyym said just to charge laptop whilst their on the road possibly driving, so alternator will provide plenty of power. Some people only need these types of tools a few times a year, and as the 12V laptop chargers can be expensive, this is very handy for the price.

        • +1

This bit sent alarm bells ringing:

but wouldnt this do the job & be able to charge better & more at once?

So just need to understand load limits (between factory ciggie plug vs drect connection to battery) and use within those limits.

80 to 100W car laptop chargers aren't that expensive. About $25 but may not be compatible with gracegym laptop.

          • @lomie: Would this be fine to power a Wii U for passengers in the back seat?

            • @idonotknowwhy: The Wii U power consumption is apparently 34W, so it would be OK.

  • +1

Those Orico enclosures are great, unless you're obsessed with (not liking) scratches.

  • Deal for nvme drive would be good.

    • yeah this would be fantastic as they are too overpriced

Anyone in Sydney want to split purchase of the 2 SSD enclosures? $6 each.

    • +2

sure, do you have ebay plus? (i dont, happy to pay you the $6)
      where are you located?

I can be in lower north shore (chatswood), city (wynyard), Belrose or even Blacktown area.

feel free to PM me if interested

      • +4

If you two need any help with anything, I'm also in Sydney (Hurstville Area). I dont need the SSD Enclosure at all but happy to help out :)

        • +2

          Thanks Graceyym!

All good, as Xishnik has sorted it out :)

          Thanks again for the offer

          • +7

@rendo: No problemo! Always happy to assist a fellow ozbargainer!

  • Is the USB enclosure using a USB A or USB C cable?

  • I think it's USB A.

    • Yes
I have bought these in a previous deal. Great for the price, even if one has died from life in a backpack.
      Not fast though.

  • Beware that USB enclosure is dodgey with MacBook pro 2018.
The USB-C version seems to work fine, I did a few tests here https://youtu.be/oRjS-s5MF_E

I'd say grab the newer models anyway for future proofing over the micro usb

  • Looks like I missed out on the Power inverter. All sold out. SAD!

    • +2

Keep an eye on the listing as I have just tried to cancel my order to get the larger 175W version for $22.36 ( also 2 for 1 deal ) that "lomie."

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175-Watt-Power-Inverter-12-Volt-…

This suits me better as it has a 60 cm lead going to cigarette lighter hence less weight and load on socket when plugged in.

      • +1

I just grabbed a pair of these for the same reason - thanks for the link

        • Great. My order cancellation for the posted smaller ones came through this morning so also ten

minutes ago ordered these 175W models. Well worth it I think just for the 60cm cable so in order

not to have a weight load pulling down on the cigarette socket itself. Extra Watts a bonus.

  • 500+ Orico cases sold in 24 hours and convinced me to buy.

  • Nice deal…. postage is a killer thou at $14.95

  • Anybody here had issues with there enclosures working reliably in USB 3 ports?

Mine sometimes stops reading/writing when copying files, on another computer it would just constantly disconnect and reconnect - issues are gone when using a USB 2 port

    • Yes, I've seen it with enclosures, docks and SATA-USB adapters, but it doesn't happen all the time.

  • Damnit.

POLLEN20 can only be used 5 times. I've now saved 5 lots of $3 each time.
    My fault - didn't read the t&c.

    • But you saved $15
